So it's just a PS3 with a screen on the controller. Pretty disappointing that it's that bland :(

That Zelda screenshot had a swirly particle effect in the upper corner that looked like the trail of an on-screen pointer and I got my hopes up for a bit there.

It's a PS3 with a screen on the controller that plays Nintendo games. I guess some people are never happy.

As I've said up thread, I really do think Sony have (technically) already got a Wii U, with Vita & PS3. I wonder how hard they'll push that combo in light of Nintendo's announcement.

A I said, I bet £20 the Wii U will play cross platform stuff at 1080p and 60fps not 360/PS3 sub 720p and 20ish fps.

I wouldn't call most of those things they showed in the reveal video "the norm".

That stuff looked good, but there's no denying it's more homogeneous in power level, software support, etc. I mean as Robo_1 says, you could do all of those things with the PS3 + Vita. It's a far cry from the Wii in that regard.

I liked the Wii and DS because they were different from the norm. Now we've got the norm with a 6inch screen.

No, they've just opened the console up to games available on the other consoles. It's a perfectly natural move after the competition aligned themselves closer to the Wii's strengths.

Technically they had it with the PS3 back in 2007 (approx.) - when they tech demoed the PSP linked to a F1 PS3 game.

FYI, I have just sat through the entire press announcement at the Nokia Theatre. Just in case none of you get it this machine is AMAZINGLY powerful. The scene with the bird flying through trees and over water is all rendered real time in 1080p and quite frankly looks amazing. It looks significantly more powerful than anything I have seen on current generation hardware.

Also the controller is NOT the console it is just the controller. The console can be seen in a few of the videos in the background. It's a little confusing as at a distance it basically looks like a slightly curvier Wii.

I'm really pumped to have a play on it in the next few hours and the sorts of cool games we can start making for it is really exciting.

What I like is that lazy developers can just make their usual games and bring them to all consoles while the shining stars can really do stuff which has never been done before. Also EA seem to be suggesting that the online strategy is up there with the best so realistically if I can buy one machine next gen which plays all the 3rd party content I'm used to on 360 and all the great Nintendo software I only need one machine :)

Look, I know you were actually there, but I watched it in a little window on my PC, and I'm telling you, it's just a controller. Word is bond.

How much they pay you for that Nnoooo? ;)

Seriously though, it maybe a lot more powerful than current machines but exponentially not /that/ much compared to, say, PS2 to PS3. so next gen it's likely to he very easily outclassed, the divide making it not possible for ports.

Look forward to reading your impressions. Im pretty happy about the system myself and think does have a huge amount of potential. Yes Sony could do something similar with the PS3+Vita but then there are a few drawbacks with that, first you need to pay out an extra £230 for the vita if you already have a PS3, if you dont have a PS3 then thats almost £500 for that setup. Secondly its not going to be the standard which means only a few titles will support that feature and developers wont waste time and money on something that can only be used by a small minority.

I think the big advantage Nintendo will have will be with first party games and exclusives, but if the 3DS is anything to go by it might not be enough.

Unless you're heading towards 3DTV, there's not going to be an exponential change for this coming generation. That was already achieved with HD.

True, it would cost more, but then you also get a full portable console, not just a controller, and Vita also has a wider range of inputs than the Wii U controller. It's also worth keeping in mind that Vita could be in millions of homes before Nintendo even get one Wii U out of the door, so Nintendo could be in a position where they're watching all of their Wii U ideas showcased by Sony, before they even hit retail.

Certainly it would never be as integral to the experience as it would be on Wii U, simply - as you say - by virtue of developers not being able to rely on every PS3 owner also having a Vita to hand, but Sony are banging the drum about PS3/Vita connectivity, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see certain PS3 games being tailored to working in unison with Vita, with the possibility of some games actually being developed specifically for duel play.

Don't you have to buy two copies of the games to play them on both?

Wouldnt surprise me either, in fact I would imagine all the third party games for Wii U that are also on the PS3 will use vita in the same way as the work would already have been done for the Wii U version.

Thing is the move from SD to HD sucked up a lot of the resources for the new consoles. If PS3s and 360s were only meant to run in SD you'd probably have games running much larger, more complex scenes, albeit a bit blurrier.

I fucking hope not, but no-one's discussing the details yet.

LAIR actually did the PS3->PSP streaming thing. But it was bad, because LAIR.

Loads of PlayStation Network releases did Remote Play too, and all the PS1 Classics support it. Rather unsurprisingly PS3 developers didn't spend much time implementing link features on the off chance someone buying their game would also own a PSP though. Even Hideo Kojima didn't really bother.

We all know the Vita/PS3 model cannot compete with this.

Look at the gamecube/GBA combo. Nitendo put a lot of work into that, and the combined entry price was way lower, yet now the fruits of that combo are either forgotten or being given away for free.

If people are creating functionality built around the Wii U, and those games are (inevitably) multiplatform, what's a quick port of that functionality to support PS3 + Vita and another check on the back of the box?

I mean a bunch of devs are all doing 3D despite it being widely despised and not many people having 3DTVs because Sony pays them to. They could do the same thing here. I'm not saying it's a competitor or anything, just that the same functionality is possible (in most cases).
