Wii HD

So new console speculation aside, what else are people hoping to see?

Aside from Wind Waker HD in some form, I'm really hoping F-Zero is going to see a return. I'd settle for a 3DS version but a new F-Zero title for the new console would be beyond epic.

The console is basically an iPad, but with possibly of more dedicated controller functions built in. Plugged into the tv it functions just like Wii does, but unPlugged from the telly you can Use it as a portable device to play the same content.

I assume you're dismissing every technical specification which has been rumoured, given there's no way they'd be possible in a device you can hold in your hands and is also a fully functioning portable.

Are you saying that if it's plugged into the TV then you use a sophisticated remote to control it?

If you are saying that then it sounds highly implausible for many reasons I can't be bothered to go into.

The DS (or, indeed, the 3DS) could offer those types of "59p app" games right now, if Nintento was inclined to support them properly. So, why would a new hardware platform change their stance? And if their stance changed, why wouldn't the DS accomodate it instead of this convoluted new iPad-home-console thing?

Help me out here, I'm still not sure what you're getting at. Are you saying that Nintendo is going to tackle the iPad market by releasing an under-the-telly home console system that comes included with an iPad-like device, and you can only get iPad-like games for it if you buy big £30 games for the under-the-telly-unit and then transfer some mini-games to the controller?

Or are you saying that the controller will be entirely autonomous, and will be available to purchase on its own, with its own range of 59p iPad-like games?

Well, the DS has been offering those kind of games for some time (again see mario 64 DS reference) and nintendo have been supporting them. It's just that no-one has been buying them as individual products until now. As has been mentioned many times, the GBA - GC link up indicated the direction but the support from 3rd parties and to a lesser extent, the technology, wasn't ready. Who knows how much time has been spent playing mario 64 DS mini-games as opposed to the main game? Nintendo has never offered those mini games as seperate mini games in the past and that isn't going to change for them but I think it will for 3rd parties.

The DS simply isn't the device for playing games on when you've got 2 minutes of time between meetings. The DS is for gamers who can't get access to a TV 24/7.

The new controller will provide that platform for 3rd parties to use and to ensure that it will be an integral part of the gamers' market by not being a totally stand alone product. Nintendo will still likely give those mini-games away free with their main products.

EDIT: Just to distance myself, the controller itself will not be the new console. The new console will be sat under the TV just like the existing ones and will play wii games with wiimotes and nunchucks just like the wii does now.

This one is better:

It's just occured to me that a touch-screen controller would allow Nintendo to release the DS back catalogue on this new console.

Edit: I changed the wording to seem more positive because it's not a bad thing.

So long as Sega don't touch it.

This. The GC one was OK, but it was fucking IMPOSSIBLE and easily the worst in the series.

Knowing Nintendo they'll farm out a 3D port of F-Zero X to some unknown studio, tart it up a bit and try and pawn it off for £40.

I thought F-Zero GX was absolutely superb, but just not as outright excellent as F-Zero X was. Purely in GX the AI would either be zooming past you at high speed, or you past them, whereas in X you'd slowly creep up til you're alongside, wondering whether you should wait to get into good shunting position, or risk it now quickly before the corner comes up.

Plus the double-tap Z or R mechanice for barges felt much more satisfying than GX hold x and press left/right alternative. In terms of solid racing though, GX was still very well put together; snaking 'bug' and all.

My least favourite in the series is probably GP legends on the GBA. Though after F zero X, my second favourite is probably Maximum Velocity on GBA, as I totally obsessed over that and it all felt so, so tight.

Super Circuit is also my favourite Mario Kart, in terms of handling.

EDIT: Why am I rabbiting on a load of old nonsense about GBA games I loved in the Wii HD thread?

That bear conference picture doesn't really make any sense unless you've been following Neogaf over the last 24 hours. They're going E3 bear crazy.

I thought the whole Bear thing was related to the long running gag about Bears and Salmon (which comes from some remark by some company mouthpiece (Shane Kim) ages ago which they have been mocking ever since).

F-Zero GX was so hard, but it had some amazing stuff in it... I never ever tired of going round a hairpin while doing 720 rotation. It was much easier to pull off cool moves... but it got too damned difficult and for a lot of the time, I didn't feel as though I was sharing a track with 30 folks. F-Zero X is better in this regard.

A combination of the best of both with face melting graphics and sound would show those Wipeout pretenders what for.... ;)

So basically the people who don't like F-Zero GX are those that suck at video games?

I can see your point though, it was incredibly tough at times, part of what it made it a great experience for me personally and kept me going back to it.

Nah, it was do-able. My main complaint was the clumsy, random nature of some of the challenges. It was still a great game as a racer. Though I'd prefer a game that had the less cluttered looks of F-Zero X, complete with Toxic Dumpy colour schemes. 30 players online and blistering speed with lots of jostling for position would make it an absolute must-have for me.

The touch screen can have just a constantly flexing Captain Falcon.

Just think of a new Project Zero game on this thing. Main game played normally on the TV, and to switch to the camera, you simply lift the controller and the screen on it becomes your viewfinder. Ghosts right there in your face!

This is brilliant. If this touchscreen controller is remotely true, they have to do this. +1
