For third parties. Have you missed almost every Iwata article for the last six months where he's constantly banging on about how much they fucked up with third parties on the Wii and they won't make the same mistake again?

No I've read every one of them with a fine tooth comb. His point, which he referred to with the unveiling of the 3ds, was that devs only like making games on super powerful consoles. That's why I said they should release a Wii ten times as powerful as the PS3. That would work, the difference in power would make Rockstar consider it. But to release what is basically as slightly more powerful 360. WHY? So devs will port their games to it? It's not going to be the lead platform. Having an installed base of NONE. So, I mean IJDGI. Why would they decide to follow the competition that they've beaten??? The Wii was the best selling console last year by a distance.

If Nintendo made the kind of games that appealed to hardcore gamers then fair enough, but they don't.

And you know it seems that perhaps there wasn't that much distance in motion control. We haven't seen anything new for a while. It was great while it lasted though. Look at what's out for Kinect, the next gen in motion controls. The Michael Jackson Experience.

So I can imagine they've come up with the next thing - call it a gimmick if you're a moron - that they think will sell 100m over the next five years. We're not sure what it is. It's not going to e a traditional console though and I'm fucking STUNNED that people are suggesting it. Yeah yeah, I wouldn't mind a Mega Nintendo that played Portal 2 but we must put aside our own wishes and think about this sensibly.

Think about a Nintendo machine that'll have all the mainstream stuff like Black Ops etc and Nintendo only stuff.

I'm thinking about it.

THOUGHT BUBBLE

Hmm, well the people who like Nintendo games have a wii and the people who like black ops have one of the other things. I don't see the Nintendo games being enough of a draw to the people who have a 360 for black ops for them to buy a Nintendo system. Otherwise, I guess, they'd have a Nintendo system.

The CoD games are already setting the bar for amazing pointer FPS controls on thw Wii, shame about the dire singleplayer on 'em :(

Things this new Nintendo must have for me.

Instant on. Like the N64 turn it on and it's on, no fucking around. No booting up. Fuck that shit man.

No discs. They're too old fashioned. The games MUST be stored on the machine. Often I cannot be fucked playing a games because I cannot be fucked changing the disc.

bloke from 1up has same idea as me.

I coined this idea on this very forum ages ago (in response to being so utterly pissed off with super metroid)

my understanding is that Nintendo aims to take this concept further and stream video of games being played to other peoples' machines so that friends can see what each other are up to

Latest "Project Café" rumours:

The points below are not confirmed. We’ll have to wait until E3 before Nintendo shares substantial information about the console. For now, though, you can check out the latest Project Cafe rumors from 1UP’s Sam Kennedy.

- Nintendo looking to create the first social game console

- No Friend Codes

- Console will be designed around the concept of connecting, sharing, gaming with others

- Think of the above as if you are in a café

- Nintendo hoping to stream video of games being played to other people’s consoles so friends can see what each other are up to

- Might be able to join another friend’s game seamlessly

Maybe I'm just too old, but there's a big sense of "deja vu" from Nintendo about this. It reminds me of the GC when Nintendo were concerned about 3rd party support, especially after the drought of 3rd party games on the N64. So they release the GC with Luigi as the launch title (which was great, but still not Mario 128) and a couple of 3rd party title. Basically to give the 3rd parties a chance, after they complained that they couldn't compete with Nintendo's games (essentially saying their games were shit in comparison).

Fast forward to the Wii, Nintendo are saying that they're not in competition with Sony or MS and are doing "what they want to do". You know, lots of blue water thinking. So the Wii sells shit loads of consoles, shit loads of Nintendo games.. and 3rd parties complain about it.

Now we get to Project Cafe and it's like it's 2001 all over again...... it's all about 3rd party games. If I'm honest, it's a shame that Nintendo are dissing their own (very successful) market strategy of trying to expand the games market sector and now just appear to be focusing on the "hardcore". Take a look at the 3DS as an example. Although the TV adverts are a little bit different.... ;-)

oh well, lets wait and see if they do indeed have anything "game changing" at E3. Maybe it will come with the vitality sensor?!?!?!

I think Nintendo should forget about pleasing 3rd parties and just buy some more studios and make sure they have a steady stream of games coming. I think they bent over backwards a bit with the Wii trying to please publishers and it backfired. They released a machine that was far cheaper to develop for and allowed 3rd parties to continue using the engines and assets that they had been using during the previous gen while giving them an innovative new control scheme to make the games feel fresh. Instead of this 3rd party publishers saw the Wii as an excuse to make knock off party games for as cheaply as possible. Obviously there were a few exceptions but on the whole 3rd party publishers were taking the piss.

I dont really think that nintendo cares that much about the traditional third parties. I think their maing goal with the new console is to secure the tablet gaming market. In the nearly future there will be a lot of cheap android tables oriented to family and entertainment. Nintendo wants to fight for that market.

It is sure that they want the thirds company to take them seriously, but unlike in the gamecube case it is an afterthough. The tablet can easily add funcionality to traditional games, and the R700 chip is really good it woudnt make sense to alienate the traditional fan base any more.

I dont think thats actually true, tablet gaming as it is at the moment is cheap and disposable gaming, Nintendo have tried to distance themselves from that as much as possible and even if this new console has touch screens on the controller I dont think they will be aiming the system to people who play games on their iPad.

This is not the final design, this unit does not have a working drive or final parts. The unit powers on and is an internal test kit that is no longer being used because more complete units have now been distributed. The design is close to what we will see at E3. The colour scheme does not necessarily reflect that of the final model either.

Looks like a router to me. Anyway whatever the design will look like I hope they release it in white and black at least. Would want to buy a white one to go with my Wii.

Still Dreaming!

Cute, but unless that chair in the background is about two metres wide, there's no way that's the size of an Xbox 360. It looks like it's the size of a Wii which'd make that disk slot that everyone's eagerly backpedalling from about the size of a GC disk.

It's not going to be free of Friend Codes either.

What is the biggest selling game on the Wii? what do most games companies do when a competitor has a very, very successful idea?

If Nintendo were concerned, they should have brought back concept approval and stopped the flood of tat at source, but then they wouldn't get all that money from manufacturing all that tat either :)
