Valve - Hell freezes over - Valve announce Half Life: Alyx VR

Recommended Posts

I don't think anyone's asking for intricate details about the game, just something along the lines of the assurances Sony had been giving before this year's E3 about The Last Guardian. Just a simple "It hasn't been cancelled". would satisfy the majority I think.

He can't announce it; because Sony need some long lost game to announce at Gamescom...

It's completely ass backwards though... I mean it seems that the only big reason they haven't released it by now or fully committed to it is because of supposed 'internet backlash'. Man, since when do companies ever give a flying fuck what a vocal minority think? You'll ALWAYS have people who are complete cunts (see example below) and type out death treats or other hurtful comments without any thought of their impact. I find it pretty hard to believe that Valve would even remotely consider those kinds of people's thoughts and opinions.

(Some kid apparently lost some skins and decides to donate even more money to make it clear that he's the biggest cunt the internet has to offer)

For balance and  , here is a video of someone doing something really nice for that same guy.

I don't really understand twitch streaming. What is going on there? Did some random just give him a bunch of 10k donations?

Most of the donations are $1 but someone sent him $15k at the start of the video

I buy the first video from "the know" way more than the second from VNN. The second comes off as slightly desperate...

If you read that bit from Marc Laidlaw where he talks about writers, you could equally apply that to game creators, especially the bit about maybe deciding to never release something, a possible outcome for Half-Life, something you cannot do if you publically say it is being worked on and will eventually come out, as that is something you cannot say with any certainty so you say nothing instead.

Half-Life exists in the situation it does because Valve is one of those rare game developers who don't have to care about commercial reality in any normal way, the only other developer which is a bit like that is Blizzard, but they still bow to commercialism by releasing direct sequels to their bankers, but do have a history of killing off spinoff/new projects that don't meet the quality bar.

What if they just came out and said it was cancelled because it didn't meet their quality standards, would people be any happier?, I doubt it.

We'd probably say 'Ah! So you've cancelled it! That confirms it existed! That means it can be restarted!'

We'd then spend the next year hoping that Netflix would pick it up.

I think I ordered day one but my email didn't give an explicit delivery date.

I did spend the weekend wiring my whole house up with a gigabit Ethernet in preparation though. My wife did not look impressed with the number of holes that got drilled.

The date is shown on your steam account order page, not in the email..

Some devs are getting theirs early. Big load of collated stuff from GAF follows. That way you don't have to go there and click through pages of shite:

Just for a laugh the guy plugged it into a Dreamcast and a Windows 95 PC. It worked on both doing straight mouse/keys mapping.
