The Valve Thread

I'm glad you put Valve in capitals so I understood properly.

I didn't say I didn't like it. Christ, it's pretty hysterical around here.

Burn the infidel!

You know what I love from consumer electronics? Giant, bright, blue LEDs on the front of things. I mean, who doesn't want their living room to look like the inside of an active fusion reactor when they dim the lights and put a game on?

Or better yet, a bright light on the controller that actually projects itself onto the screen!

How powerful is it then? Is it miles ahead of the ps4 & bone?

It's a PC in a box and it comes in range of different GPU levels starting at a Titan which totally beasts the consoles. But the lower cards probably will as well.

The lowest ones won't. Just to be clear though is no fixed spec here. So it isn't directly comparable as an entity.

The box isn't really the point, it's the OS and the controller that they're really beta testing - on a range of hardware configurations.

Selected media outlets might have you think otherwise.

Sure, I just meant that particular one...

Generally, I think it sounds cool.

Well the one pictured looks to have a GTX780 in it.

You know how RLLMUK seems to have lost its shit over the fact the PS4 has 50% more GPU power than the Bone, well a 780 has more than double the GPU power of a PS4. (we don't mention that though, as the PS4 crew don't like anyone saying bad things about their shiny new toy)

Yeah but this take on it comes up against the same old thing - it's probably much more expensive.

For sure, but no amount of money will get you BF4 @1080p on the PS4/Bone for example.

Thats true but come on, that card costs £400 and it only has 3gb of ram.

I would be interested in a steam box if the price is right and the system runs cool and quiet.

If the cost is just the total of the parts then its pretty much a waste of time.

Having a small form factor chassis that provides the trifecta of "small, quiet, fast" (as opposed to any two) will be quite an achievement for PC gaming in and of itself. I really like what they've done with airflow, just breaking the old paradigm that you have to have a consolidated path from front to back. And with standard parts no less!

I might rescue my old gaming PC and turn it into an HTPC if they sell the chassis seperately.

I'm the keyboard connector from the eighties on a thing that was made in 2013

Is that for mice? Don't some high-end gamers still swear by PS/2 over USB for mice because the sampling rate is much higher?

Oh, and also, isn't there some issue with rollover keys on most (or all?) USB keyboards?

They won't be selling anything. 300 units for the hardware beta and that's it. Although I do believe they are going to release their case blueprint so others could make it if they wish.

More RAM just for graphics than what the PS4 and Bone will offer up with their OS bloat and having to have all the game assets in the same small pool.

£350 retail.

Well, not them, but somebody using this design.

Yes, you can buy PC components with better specs than consoles, for as much money as a whole console. We've been around this before.
