The Valve Thread

My hope is that in 4 years time a low cost livingroom pc would be powerful enough to make the PS4 & Xbone look distinctly underpowered causing a widespread move over to PC gaming. Then, what I really would like to see is Sony to respond by not bringing out a PS5, but instead to bring out their own livingroom pc, ending the age of the closed console.

Imagine a glorious age where you weren't restricted to consoles from three different companies, but instead you could choose from big names such as Dell, Lenovo and Asus, small boutique companies such as Piston and Chillblast, or you could build your own.

You'd never have to worry about system exclusives again, or pay for annual passes just to watch on demand TV. You could buy DRM free versions of indie games direct from the developer without having to give a 30% cut to some multinational. Backwards compatability would no longer be a thing.

I'm welling up just thinking about it.

That would more mean that Sony, a bit like Microsoft's cross-platform strategy, are hedging their bets and setting themselves up for what they really wanted to be anyway, the gate keeper of the theme park, taking a cut for everything that comes through the gates, the ultimate platform holder.

Which might be one way of looking at Valve's ambitions too, 30% of everything.

Well as gaf's down then all they have is muk.

It's currently receiving a friendly hug from Reddit.

Also stolen from Reddit...

Half-Life trademark filing date: Nov 27, 1997

Release date: Nov 19, 1998

Half-Life 2 trademark (filed as Half-Life) filing date: Feb 25 2005

Release date: Nov 14, 2004

So this annoyingly means very little other than them having to use the trademark within 3 years.
