The Valve Thread

Well that's certainly... different. I'm really keen to try it actually, as others have said, it's nice to see a genuinely fresh take on the game pad.

They may gently mock other controllers, but I fear the joke will be on them once they announce the price. It looks like a premium product with lots of swish tech included. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up retailing for at or above a 100 notes.

It's a shame, predictable, but still a shame that so many people are writing this off with out any first hand experiences or opinions to draw from. Gamers always claim they want innovation but once again we see why companies stick to same old well trodden paths.

It's a controller stuck between two worlds - analogue sticks and mouse & k/b and hardcore fans of both will have to have their sticks and mouses prised from their cold dead hands.

Not if it works as advertised.

They're not doing this for no reason, are they? They're addressing a real need - I mostly use the 360 pad with my PC because it's comfortable, i'm familiar with it (I also had a mystery issue with my mouse being super sensitive in games) and it also allows me to sit on my bed a few feet away from my desk which I fInd more comfortable than sitting at the desk on the rickety chair I have (sitting at this angle also eliminates some of the LCD corner glow on my monitor. So I have my reasons for it but obviously it's not something that is suitable for certain games and it's obviously less sensitive and accurate than a mouse.

I don't really have anything against M+K and i've always seen the advantage (back in the day I used it a lot playing CS tonnes at gaming cafes), i'm not one of these stupid ''ARRRGHH M+K'' people, but as I said for the reasons above I almost never use it now. This device would bring these two disparate control schemes together and it could be quite marvellous if it works appropriately well.

I don't really see what the point of this is either. The PS4 controller has a trackpad on it. That seems like it would work for all the PC-like games that wouldn't work on console (RTSes, etc). It seems like a much more useable solution to the problem than this does.

In some ways this could be as revolutionary as the N64 pad was. If the haptic touch area work as I would imagine them too then it solves a problem that has bothered PC FPS players for quite a while, the digital nature of WASD. If it can give the accuracy of mouse controls for FPS games then its a big step forward. Valve have obviously stent a lot of tim e and resources on this so it could be something really special.

So you're making a comparison between two pads, both of which you haven't used?

Don't get me wrong I want to try it and I'm pretty excited by it as I've been used to 360 controllers for years and have just got into PC gaming but m&k/b is a bit of struggle for me to adjust to, not to mention it being awkward to play comfortably.

If it works as advertised I'll happily hand over £80-100

Likewise if it's as good as advertised.

Yeah, that's a good point about the digital nature of WASD. I think there's something more appealing on a basic tactile level about having something more akin to the real pleasure and mind-body connection that dual analogue sticks offer.

Obviously it remains to be seen how successful this will be in bridging the gap and perhaps we'll find that there's little benefit in doing so but I think Valve should be congratulated on trying to innovate, something which is crucial to progression.

I think people need to rein in their expectations of the haptics a little. Imagine computer control over the texture of the pad, how different parts feel under your thumb, and you'll get the idea. That's what modern haptics can do.

I could see them doing a virtual d-pad where it's smooth in the d-pad area, and rough elsewhere, to keep you on track. It would use the click function for actually pressing buttons, and even virtual clicks as you circle around the directions and the imaginary "switches" click on and off.

Errr...

i3szkEX.jpg

So, how the fuck do you jump, or pick up items, like you do in Portal all the time?

It doesn't even work with their own game.

Wasn't 'E' for interactions? that seems to be mapped to 'full/inner circle' on the right pad.

[edit] Bloody hells.

I can understand a bit of doubt about whether the pad will function as advertised and be comfortable etc, but do really think that Valve would have released a screenshot of a control scheme that couldn't functionally work?

Do some of you think they just drew this up on the back of a club flyer yesterday evening and haven't really given it much thought?

Click the stick for jump?!?

And people don't think this is terrible?!

Oh, that's terrible alright. I hope that this doesn't "inspire" the HL3 console controls.*

It needs shoulder buttons. And maybe stick on physical buttons for the right touch pad.

*Although clicking the touchpad is going to be a lot easier than clicking a stick.

I don't think it's a 'click'. It seems to use three levels based on that pic:

- outer edge

- inner ring

- centre

So to jump, you'd probably touch the direction with the tip of your thumb on the outer edge, then lay the rest of your thumb flat over the centre to jump. (Of course, this could make backward jumps Awkward, so I'm probably in the wrong here.)
