Speedruns

I'm watching the Control run in bits and bobs at the moment, which is great fun so far. The Shadow Of the Colossus run was very entertaining too, as was Metroid Dread, and surprisingly I quite enjoyed what I watched of the FFX run as well.

The blind custom Mario World levels race is essential. The Mario Maker races are always great fun, this one goes further by being modded so the level creators can do whatever they want, introducing entirely new mechanics, and it's amazing.

this really undersells how fantastic this run is, some of the levels do stuff with SMW that I didn't even know was possible with the game or even with the SNES. really worth your time.

Barb taking the win despite the other team having a massive head start.

ESA (like GDQ with a European bent) do a rolling repeat of their speedrun events on their Twitch channel when not live, so I wonder why GDQ don't do the same. I like sticking some ESA speedruns on in the background.

I read that GDQ don't cut down their videos on YouTube to just the runs as they won't people to rewatch their donation shout outs so I guess the come to reshowing events from a different angle.

One of the coolest things about the run, is that despite obviously being insanely good at the game, there are sections where because they are using so many speedrun glitches, if they die once they will cause a soft lock, trashing the run. So from the speedrunner's perspective it's just as white knuckle, brown trousers time playing it as the game is for us mere mortals

Something interesting about runs of modern games, is they're talking about how certain little strategies no longer work in the most recent patches of the game. It makes sense for games to be polished and little things to get "fixed" after release for quality of life reasons, but you do wonder if for the sake of small things if it isn't just more fun to leave those things in the game. Especially when it will only be speed runners that will really be using them, and they make for some of the most fun unique aspects of so many games when they aren't game breaking in normal circumstances.

I didn't realise ESA has two streams going on. Pretty good to have an alternative to sitting through another Pokémon / Final Fantasy epic run if that's not your bag.

Speaking of. :hmm:

I've not seen the Doom Eternal one, but the Doom 2016 speedrun was rather poor. I'm sure there's skill involved but being out of bounds 75% of the run balancing on pixels to avoid a soft-lock does not make for exciting viewing.

The Doom Eternal one is 100% within the game, and demonstrates some incredible combat and movement skill. They have to collect everything as well, so 100% completion with every item and upgrade, so it's the most "natural" speedrun of the entire game you can get.

It's "Restricted" so they are not allowed to used out of bounds exploits and stuff like that, and forces it to be a speedrun of pure skill and only exploiting what the game already lets you do within it if you don't deliberately break it:

I think I much prefer the skill-based speedruns. Out of bounds stuff is a good complement to that in moderation, but too much is just people spending hours finding a hole in the map rather than actually playing the game quickly

I can't wait to see speedruns for Powerwash Simulator. Especially the big levels.

It's a game made for it, total precision and working out the best paths for 100%

No full game runs yet but individual levels...

Could be considered to be spoilers for equipment. I have no idea what the washer or attachment they're using is.
