Not sure why they started accepting shmup runs in the first place since you can't usually play most of them much quicker

There was a Mushihimesama Futari* run a couple of years back and they realised there was a desire to see games that required a high level of skill but couldn't necessarily be speedrun. So there's been a couple of those types of games since; there's usually a rhythm game showcase (Beat Sabre is on right now for instance) as well.

*I recall this initially came about because the TGM run showcases went down really well which started the idea, despite them being able to be speedran... I've also a feeling I'm wrong about that as well though.

Seeing The Messenger speedrun really makes me want to go back for another runthrough of it.

Haha, yeah, Gus's futari run was immense! Everyone in the community was telling him he had to do the Bukowski quote at the end

Here's a direct link to Muchi Muchi Pork from this morning, by the way, if anyone's interested. I haven't watched it yet, so no spoilers! - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/864701192?t=2352m05s

edit: Here's the youtube link as promised. Watched it on twitch last night! I won't spoil anything but it was great fun!

I don't know how long they keep the VODs on twitch for, so I'll edit that out for the youtube one when it's available.

Yeah, I think those skill demos all came after the 2015 Tetris Grand Master run:

The Stepmania run at AGDQ 2016 was another of those non-speedrun rhythm action skill showcases:

And Clone Hero a year ago:

I think I could dedicate my free time to shmups for decades and get nowhere near being able to dodge through swarms of bullets like the Muchi runner up there ^ :(

Tell me about it! The second loop of any cave game is way above my pay grade.

My main takeaway was that I'd been playing the game wrong all this time  Looks like you're supposed to be constantly keeping the in and out tray half full, picking up pigs and cashing out with your lard shot.

I was just filling my meter to the top every time and then going wild in the aisles with the focus shot until it ran out. I am as stupid as I am sexy.

Really makes me want to play it again though and go for the 1cc.

I love watching these runs where the commentators are telling you everything that's happening, really interesting.

They do that on STG weekly, but during a live run, it's much better because they have to fill the dead air and keep everything really concise.

They have to get everything across during a 20-30 minute run rather than having the luxury of waffling on for 2 hours.

Just to be clear, that was the second loop, that's like the bastard hard difficulty for masochists only. Don't let it put you off trying the game!

I've had the game since it came out on 360, but it never really grabbed me in the same way as eg Mushihimesama or Espgaluda so I haven't played it for years. And yes, I love the fact that he just jumped in on the second loop.

I do like Karl Jobst but he appears to have found that 'cheating' videos are more controversial and successful than Doom/Goldeneye speedruns. I find all the Billy Mitchell stuff a bit sad and he clearly has little enthusiasm for Minecraft besides its popularity. I will watch whatever he puts out, but he's been less essential for me over the last year or so.

I can’t blame him for exploiting the system honestly. YouTube encourages making the same kind of video by design (and punishes diversity within a channel) so he may as well milk it while it’s hot. We’ll probably see him return to the other kind of content eventually once the well has dried or if he becomes sick of it.
