Speedruns

Recommended Posts

It's one guy (Cosmo Wright) who paints his nails. He says he does it because he likes the colours, which is fair enough I suppose. He runs a site called Speed Runs Live which amalgamates the streams from a load of speedrunners who broadcast on Twitch - http://speedrunslive.com/

-edit

He's streaming a speedrun of Wind Waker at the moment, as it happens - http://www.twitch.tv/cosmowright?utm_campaign=live_embed_click&utm_source=speedrunslive.com

An attempt at completing 100% runs through both GTAIII and Vice City, within 24 hours, is currently going on:

Seven hours in so far! And he's currently doing the vigilante missions, by exploiting a glitch where entering the main menu makes the suspect immediately leave their vehicle...

This kinda fits in here but is mainly just crazy.

GoldenEye has a huge speedrunning following, with World Rankings and points systems. Have a look:

http://rankings.the-elite.net/goldeneye

Anyway, in GoldenEye you can change your settings to make it harder. The height of difficulty has been named by the community as Dark Licence to Kill settings and uses these:

007 difficulty mode

Enemy Health 1000%

Enemy Damage 1000%

Enemy Accuracy 100%

Enemy Reaction Speed 100%

That's nuts. Me and a friend used to compete with one another on LTK mode. It's like playing an entirely different game, it's so tense.

I swear, much of Perfect Dark was designed around the speed-run cult. The enemy routines are just laid out nicely for it.

Is anyone up late watching this? They just had a TAS exhibition where they played Super Mario World so crazily that it began to accept code from the controller port, and then reprogrammed the game to play Pong and Snake, while the game was running. That literally happened.

Ooof, bit painful to watch the absolute definition of an autistic nerd complete with horse's laugh in that vid but otherwise the gameplay is pretty amazing.

BlueGlass? Its not painful, the man's genuinely got massive enthusiasm for speedrunning and knows his shit.

The guy with a mask on the second left holding on to his knees for dear life.

It's not that I'm bothered by such people personally (I get a long with everyone just fine), however in a spotlight such as this they put gaming and themselves in a bad light which is a bit of a shame. Err yah, just my two cents.

For me stuff like that shows gaming in a really good light, as a community wherein even the most awkward and unusual characters can find a safe space to make friends, get out of the house a bit and - with a bit of effort - maybe even end up being celebrated for being really, really good at something?

I suppose if it embarrasses you to be associated with people who don't look "cool" then that might pose problems for you personally, but surely it's worth that minor inconvenience for the greater good.
