Sonic Generations

This is great fun. Infinitely better designed than any of the Sonic games I've played in the past decade, though I haven't played them all. It's got some good platforming bits, even in the modern Sonic sections. A nice little surprise :)

It's a good PC port too, no obvious omissions in the options and it uses Steamworks and runs very stably.

The 2D sonic levels are pretty outstanding in this, although I can't help but think the balance is skewed towards the 3D gameplay. (boss levels and duration of 3D levels).

Green Hill Zone is (and always was) one of the best platform levels ever, now with superb visuals to match. Sadly, I can't say the same about the gamplay of any of the spiky (forgive the pun) 3D levels.

Example: 100mph sprint - 90 degree right angle - brick wall - several platforms too high to jump on with new control scheme & camera. The pacing, flow and difficulty are all over the place. It isn't the "hate 3D" side coming out of me, but the 3D levels don't need to be that complicated, they need to be more like the old 3D bonus levels on sonic 2.

Not entirely convinced with the hub, upgrades or boss progression either but nice to see they have tried to extend the life. Good to see Casino Night in there but it's criminal that it isn't a proper stage- DLC maybe?

Overall I think it's a great package with childhood memories and nostalgia flooding back but I can't help thinking they didn't focus on the most prominent aspects enough - speed, visuals and level design. Two steps forward, one step back.

Episode 2 with this engine would be great! No idea if episode 2 is actually happening or not though.

Not only is it happening, they're now claiming Sonic CD as its prequel.

If the engine/level design/music isn't improved, there shall be murder.

Spent 2 hours last night playing that 30second time trial thing on the online mode, fun as hell going just a inch further/thinking how to get there faster. Its like a mini-training mode for you to go back and master the rest of the level.

I daresay this is also the first sonic game in years that'll have some genuine longevity, for pure playing through again and again factor. Only level I've disliked is classic planet wisp.

They're morons if theres no proper DLC.

Unless my eyes are broken, this is running at 30fps. I can't focus on SHIT at high speed.

Yeah, it really needs to run at 60fps.

The other day I had another go on the Sonic 4 Episode 1 demo (the astonishing verdict: it's still crap!), and then straight onto the Generations demo, and was surprised that the latter's framerate felt juddery in comparison.

Does buying this instead of uncharted 3 make me a massive fail? I figure u3 can wait for when I have a few days off work at Christmas and short fat sonic is too awesome and...

Shit, I'm starting to sound old.

Uncharwhatnow?

This and Zelda (and Mario) is Christmas.

It does make you realise how soulless and bland the post-S&K badnik designs were.

Loving this though. I can already think of a few zones I'd like to see in SG2. Hopefully we'll also get a brand new 'classic' Sonic game featuring all-new stages that aren't just a cut-and-paste of old zones, ala Sonic 4.

Completed it. If I was told a month ago that I would enjoy this more than Uncharted 3 I'd think you were insane, but shockingly I have.

I do kinda wish they threw in some more of the classic levels though. Nobody wants to be reminded that Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 exists.

Hmm..

I don't want to like this. I really don't. I've grown up now. The previous sonics since the first 3 have pretty much all been crap (well, apart from the Sumo games).

But i do kinda like this. It still has a few frustatingly linear moments but far more enjoyable platforming ones.

Its not 60, and is defo not 60 during the 3D sections - its very laggy in a few bits (which ruins the flow) but during the actual inactive bits its okay.

I should probably turn V-sync off really.

Looks amazing at 1080 though - and the levels are very well done.

Does this run at 60fps on PC? is 30fps just on the consoles?

It's running at 60fps on mine, which is a macbook pro with an average graphics chip. I'm not running in 1920x1200 though, I've dropped down a resolution to keep the framerate up as it's so important to the game. I'm really enjoying it, the challenges are fun and the design is generally very solid, not many 'FUCK YOU STUPID GAME' moments!

So, SG2; let's have another stage or two from each MD game, and maybe one from Sonic 3D, Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix, mixed in with a few GG/MS/GBA stages for good measure. Then forget about the rest. It's a shame it does end with Planet Wisp as it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, a taste that can only be described as bile. Really good game though, I'm definitely going to I back and do all the challenges.
