I've got it.

Its nice. Kinda hack 'n slash Ninja adventure action platformer game with Sci Fi elements. Combo's improve your level which improves the number of slahes you can make.

I'd imagine its been layed out for huge combo racks (well i got 37 until my daughter screamed the place down having been burnt!).

You get MP (magic points) which open projectile weapons.

Theres also shmup elements in here - some robots explode into a cross of neon death, which is nice.

Feels a bit like Magician Lord actually - but only in layout.

Not quite as freeflowing as Strider because theres lots of platforms to grab but its got some slides and shiz so i'd imagine later on that will improve.

I do love it when the squaresoft logo appears on an arcade game - makes you think its something special.

If you're after some Strider action, why not download the excellent Hard Corps: Uprising, and the DLC character Sayuri? She plays the entire game with just a sword (making it even more difficult), and it's EXACTLY like Strider. ;)

I don't pay money for stuff that should have been in a game anyway.

Understandable.

As far as this goes; it's all a bit of a mess, and very button mashy. Not a great deal of skill involved. Ugly as fuck, too.

Oh well. My other option is far more desirable.

Man don't say that. It makes the child in side of me cry.

God damn it. I've spent about £25 so far on XBLA titles and DLC this week due to the silly sales, and was expecting to pay more. I saw the video and was ridiculously stoked.

I'm backing up Curtis by the way. Hard Corps Uprising's easily one of the best downloadable titles I've played in ages, and Sayuri's a great bit of DLC (unlike Harley, who's utterly pointless). However, Konami are even worse than Capcom for nickel and diming you over DLC - remember Harmony of Despair or whatever it was called? Pretty ramshackle game, lots of reused assets, and they still charged for extra characters and stages off an already 1200 point game.

Hard Corps is more than worth what they're asking for it. And I'll at least download the demo for this.

Bought and downloading now. Will report back :) Players, feel free to toss me an invite for some coop fun. PSN: Kanselier

edit: Impression time. Will update this more or less real-time :)

- Awkward intro.

- Four playable characters with the usual differences: one is good with magic, other is more melee.

- Platforms and floors all over the place. You can clearly see the influences of Strider.

- You can hang under platforms, a quick Up tap on the dpad launches your character for the floor above whilst doing a light attack that can kill small enemies like turrets.

- Double jump is present.

- I've just leveled up. No idea what it does yet.

- Animations are decent.

- Graphics are rough.

- I find it difficult to see when an enemy is dead. There is very little feedback (no blood, no explosions).

- There is a combo counter (chain kill enemies within a timed window). No idea what it does yet.

- Levels have hidden Power Ups. I can not confirm whether or not they are character specific but the magic girl can now reduce damage taken by a certain percentage, generate HP and blind an enemy for a short time.

- No continues. You die, it is Game Over.

- No feedback when you have low HP.

- Enemies can stack on top of each other. On several occasions I have had 5 or 6 enemies standing on top of each other. As far as I can tell from this brief experience you can only hit one enemy at a time. So in this scenario I hit one enemy, another one hits me.

- No knockback recovery move. If you are being knocked back you have to sit the animation through until you hit a wall or the ground.

So far, not overly impressed.

The biggest flaw in my opinion is that it is imposible to do some free style combos. As far as I know right now there is one combo: mash the Square button for a 3 hit chain combo. You can use a Dash to spice it up a little but it feels incredibly bland. Perhaps the game comes to life when in 4 player coop.

Just played the demo - took a few shots to the face before figuring out that your character can't even duck. :(

That said, I was starting to get into the swing of things by the time I reached the boss - even if they don't let you see his second phase. Scumbags.

The controller config was the barrier for enjoyment for me.

A nippy, arcade game like this is crying out to use the d-pad. But movement is mapped to the left stick and, fuck only knows why dash has been mapped to the right trigger. On the PS3! I know. Especially when there are unused face buttons.

Controls aside, it feels too bare bones and unfinished. Strider was an epic adventure, full of inventiveness and scale. Where as this is just a game running around rudimentary levels, chaining big combos against slow moving fodder.

Just did a 2-player coop game. Cleared the first 3 levels. It is still a bit meh. It feels and looks so incredibly dull, the recycled enemies do not help: different coloured guards, flying insects and a unicycle.
