Ridge Racer 3DS

I don't know how or why, but this morning the 3D finally "clicked". I can now put the slider up (from about 20% before) to full and it looks much more impressive. :)

It has got better for me as I've gone along, certainly.

Something just occurred to me whilst playing Rayman - the framerate in it dips a lot more than Ridge Racer, and I think the 3D effect really suffers for it. Developers will need to work really hard to keep the framerate at its highest on the 3DS; Ridge Racer does a good job of keeping it stable, and it really helps the sense of 3D.

The cars remind me of actual little Micro Machines - especially so when in the little display case right at the start. Just like perfect tiny 3D models zooming about in a 3D world - in my hand...awesome really.

Yeah, the replays are very impressive.

So this is 30fps, is that noticeable compared to say the PSP Ridges? Is the 3d effect decent compensation? Odd how 60fps isn't available in 2d mode, as in SSF4.

Tbh I never noticed it, it moves just as fast as the previous ridge racers (im including the console ones here as well) and gameplay wise its pretty much the same. As for the 3D effect, out of all of the titles I have tried (Ridge, Pilotwings and SSF4) I would say that RR3D is by far the most impressive and one game I wouldnt want to not play in 3D.

PSP RR is 30fps, too.

Nah, both PSP games were 60fps. DS Ridge was 30fps.

That's good to hear, so is the 30fps not so noticeable in SSF4 either? Racers and fighters are two games I usually prefer to be 60fps, but maybe in 3d that's not so important.

Good to see the love for this :) I was hesitant to create thread after reviewing this weeks ago, thinking it was just me really liking Ridge Racer 3D, but it turns out to be one of the best 3DS launch games. Not to mention a better racing game than anything that appeared on the regular DS.

Eurogamer seems to think that there are no new tracks. I think there are.

Affirmative. I've seen two so far (the winding Grand Canyon-like track (with the water splash near the end) and the snow figure of eight track. Might be more.

The 3D-effect compensates a lot. The sensation of speed is really lovely, and a lot stronger compared to the PSP games.

Kotaku says it's the best of the 3DS launch games, in terms of 3D-effects.

I don't think the 3D is actually that pronounced really, but that's if you're playing with the in-car view, and it tends to be affected by the low resolution of distant fences and crowds too, it kind of 'shimmers' and looks a bit weird in 3D. It does look lovely though, and adds a nice sense of depth to it all. Fun game too, if only it had an online mode!

Sure they're not from Rave Racer?

They might have just had a facelift visually.

I like the fact that its gone back to its more arcade style roots and ditch the boring as piss look that the psp ps3 interations had. We want our ridge racer to be bright, colourful and over the top.

this

That little fiat 500 thing with the engine out the back that went like a rocket was so awesome in rage racer

The more time I put into this the more I love it. I think it's somewhat of a slow burner once you get beyond the initial 'omg teh 3deeee' but after a while of the competition improving somewhat I think this is a blinder of a game. Although fair warning for anyone, don't bring it into the loo with you to play. After what seemed like only five minutes to me was in fact nearly half an hour something I was only aware of when my girlfriend shouted upstairs in some panic assuming i'd died in there...

I missed this topic, sorry. I'll just repost what I posted in the 3DS thread:

Not much to say, really. It's Ridge Racer, again. It's the same sideways sliding, nitrous boosting game it's been since the sixth one, so if you're turned off by the silly way the cars stick to the track even when you're pointing the wrong way, this won't convince you to change your heathen ways. It is, of course, rather good! Very easy so far, but I'm still on the beginner GP. My preferred control setup (shoulder buttons for accel./brake) are a bit uncomfortable on the diddy little 3DS, however it's not too bad. The circle bad is nice and responsive, and I've been doing some fun slides. Word of advice, turn the voice volume OFF as soon as humanly possible, or you will wish to kill somebody.

Regarding the graphics: it's actually not too shabby. It's not quite as nice-looking as the PSP games, but it's hardly a million miles off either. It looks better than it did in the videos I originally watched anyway. It's not 60fps but it's not a juddery mess, either. In fact, I've not 'noticed' any performance issues when playing, and it's all rather fast and lovely. So, pretty pleased with that.

Then there's the 3D, which has this way of making it look much more solid and believable. Some of the flyover scenes before you start a race are just stunning, like little windows into real places you could reach into and touch through the screen. Replays, too, look great. But here's the thing: most of the time playing Ridge Racer, you'll be looking into the distance, at the road coming up. For that reason (unless you're using exterior view like a heathen (die in a fire!!)) the 3D effect is not really in-your-face. It's all just distance depth, which you sort of get used to and then stop thinking about it. So it doesn't really make much of a difference. I do like the fact that it occasionally chucks leaves, confetti and water droplets at you, though; they stick to your windscreen for a while, in the foreground. Gimmicky, but made me smile.

If anything, playing Ridge Racer has made me wish the screen was a higher res (oh noes, I've become Morrius, etc.!!). Distant objects suffer from aliasing, and 3D aliasing is not something you particularly want to see. Ah well.

In short, I rather like it!

Regarding the image crosstalk: I don't think it's a game issue, I think it's inherent to the screen technology. A sequel wouldn't improve that. New hardware might.

Don't be put off, it's really good!

someone mentioned that the ghosting was a software problem in the game itself...

Just came here to post how great this game is :o

Not played ridge racer since RR6, and while at first the main thing that got me was how many menu's there where @_@; after playing a few games im itching to go back and play more :)

I find it noticeable in ssf4, but i aim for combo's and use charge characters (ive set to to 2d mode 60fps in options) but you can still have a great game in 30fps.

Playing the ridge city track in 3D reminds me of how blown away I was playing the arcade original.

3D on 3DS may not be able to change gameplay but it's pretty nifty.

Brilliant fun, always love a ridge launch game.
