Shigeru Miyamoto - "3D is the future of gaming"

One thing I do find odd is that people are really up in arms about how current gen consoles have to lower the resolution to provide 3D effects. I swear some people want the moon on a stick, in HD.

If you have the money for an HD console and a 3D tv, surely a high end PC isn't out of the question anyway? [/antagonistic assumption]

I know, just a funny study.

It's all very shaky to be honest. But until I see a remotely credible study demonstrating any kind of player performance benefit to 3D, Sprite Machine's argument holds no water at all.

I'm quite sure it makes for a more immersive experience for some people though, I'm not questioning that.

Improve performance?! PERFORMANCE?! Not what I'm interested in at all when playing a game. Next there will be annual reviews and disciplinary hearing for 100%ing games.

Haha. That's not something I worry about either. I prefer playing games with my performance impaired i.e. by having a few beers.

Or Kindle, ipad etc.

It's clearly not perfect, but that doesn't mean it's not the future.

If we're not using holodecks before I die I'll be very upset.

Most people are not using those devices. WE are because we're into all that kind of thing, but most people are still reading an actual factual book. And even those who are using a kindle or iPad don't have it hovering in front of their face, they are reading it off a screen. It's that idea that I find hard to see as better. If only your book was hovering off the page, it would be better?

That didn't take you a long time to go from starting a thread about 3D gaming to dismissing it altogether, mr Morrius 3D.

/golfclap

Why do you even bother?

Yeah, like when I said I'd happily play a 3D game when they sort out all the problems, and when I said it increases immersion for some people. 'Dismissing it altogether'.

Has there ever been a performance study that shows performance increasing with screen resolution?

I honestly don't know how to respond to this. It's just logically false in the most fundamental sense. You're judging the WORTH of a visual feature that you cannot perceive. Your argument is nonsensical.

I get what you are saying, but you are missing my point. The 3D effect is screwing up my enjoyment of films and maybe, in the future, games. In films, if I go see it in 3D I get more muted colours than the 2D version. Thats the same for everyone who watches it, not just me. Its a step backwards. Toy Story 3 looks better in 2D, thats a widely held opinion, and one I share strongly having seen both versions. I also get bits of a film that are plainly just meant to make me go 'oooooh' rather than adding to the experience of the overall film. Most of my friends take their kids to see the 2D versions of films because they look better, in their opinions.

In games, we will have a drop in performance, so lower frame rates and lower res graphics. The Eurogamer RR review says "The slightly rough, cartoon visuals and occasional frame-rate drops are unfortunate but easily forgiven." Is the 3D worth that much? Really?

Thats my point. Its a not-ready technology that will hold back games as all titles will have it shoe horned in as it's the 'latest thing'

well it's not a great comparison anyway is it really? 3D gaming compared to books/audio. One's reading the other is listening.

3D does, literally, add an extra dimension to games which can enhance the experience.

It's not like a 2D platformer becomes a 3D platformer when you don the glasses though, is it. It doesn't change the gameplay one bit. It could definitely make it more immersive and enhance the experience though, but that can only be measured subjectively, whereas any effect on gameplay would be objectively obvious.

But it does allow a 2D platformer where judging when objects are in the same plane as your character is made a lot easier and without relying on other visual aids.

Did you play that Doritos Crash Course XBLA game where there were balls that swung in and out of the screen and could hit your character as they ran past? That would have been much better in 3D.

It would be really nice in LBP as well where you're moving between multiple planes with objects in both.

I like Killzone 3 in 3D. It's totally a gimmick, but it looks so impressive and having snowflakes and ash and crap blow round the screen and out at you is just cool. Unnecessary but cool. The best effects I find always revolve around small things hanging in the air, they really showcase the depth between themselves and the background, particularly when they blow towards you.

As for 3D porn, there's a swimsuit calender documentary thing in 3D on the PS Store. I only got the free 4 minute trailer, but it's surprisingly good! At one point a woman with huge breasts walks really far out of the screen at you. Again, unnecessary but cool.

Well of course not but it would aid judging depth and distance in a 3D platformer.

Not sure about that one.

Of course it would. You're Mario, and there's this cunt snowman in the distance throwing snowballs at you. What a cunt. You need to jump and then hit the snowball back into his cunt face.

Do you think that's going to be easier to do in 2D or 3D? Have you never done that thing where someone throws something at you with one eye closed and you try to catch it?
