Retro Gamer 87

Nice grey cover this month featuring an N64 with Mario 64 plugged into it.

The main feature is a massive, and really very exhaustive, collector's guide to the N64. I can only imagine how much hard work went into it.

Cheap as Chips: Haunting

Makings of...Revenge of The Mutant Camels, The Lotus Series, Shadow of The Beast, JSW 2

The history of Duke Nukem

Retrorevivals: PC-Genjin, Spiderman

Incentive Software

Classic Game: Psycho Fox

Future Classic: Astro Boy

Obscura Machina: Satellaview

The Chair with: Al Lowe

Brilliant issue- excellent idea for the N64 collectors article, which made me wish I had actually purchased some of those games (e.g. Starcraft) back then. Also makes me wish I had kept the boxes, but then nobody did that... ;-) However, I did keep the box for my US copies of Harvest Moon and Paper Mario!

Can't wait for a collectors article on the Saturn! Actually it would be interesting to see similar articles on 8-bit computers, as I don't even know if there are any rare games for the Speccy or C64....

I think i might start picking up Retro Gamer. Im not a fan of much pre 16 bit due to my age and thinking that 1994 to 2003 was probably the best time for games but i've noticed Retro Gamer is starting to cover more recent stuff lately that interests me. Think i'll start with this issue as it looks excellent.

I think i will start subbing but for me there has been two things 1. The joy of seeing a new issue on the shelves, especially when going on a long train journey and 2. It not getting to me in the post and the hassle with that.

I can tell you from my experience that even when you do sub it still makes your nostalgic geeky heart glow when you see it on the store shelves. And I've never had a single issue (actually, you could say I've had every issue!) with Retro Gamer and Imagine. Top stuff.

I've got every issue and I think been subbed since the tail end of 2004 and in all that time I've had one issue turn up late. Never had one not make it to me either on the release date or generally up to five days before the street date. Over xmas an issue went missing but it was quickly sorted out and actually did turn up, just quite late due to the weather, the holidays and what not.

Enjoyed the N64 collector's guide, and the excellent making ofs.

Bonus (rudeness) points to Paul Drury for the boxout on what inspired Jeff Minter's love of hairy beasts, and for Richard Burton's caption on the Steve Davis Snooker screenshot!

I thought the Jet Set Willy 2 Making Of was excellent. I loved the way they just decided to fix it for the Amstrad version and went on to add a job lot more screens without asking permission! Really enjoyable read.

Is there a Taxman article to follow up?

I guess if enough people asked for it, it would happen. You have to tread carefully with Manic Miner / Jet Set Willy. It seems like a lot of people like to read about these games, but an equal amount think the mag has overdone them (that was certainly true in the early days).

I like the N64 article, but you have to admit it's a bit flabby/page-wasting. Lots of pictures is great, but 2 pages at the start for a massive picture of a stock N64 and a bit of text, a whole page for the fairly meh Majora's Mask SE and then 2 pages that are just a list of every N64 game ranked by rarity (this should probably be on the website, linked to in the mag) really is pushing it. Almost as bad as that collector's guide you used to waste a load of pages on.

The rest of the mag is as always excellent, you can never have too many Jeff Minter interviews.

That's certainly one way of looking at it. Although we have plenty of in-depth articles each month, so I don't think the odd article in this style is too much in a single issue. The aim was to do something pictorial based with the aim of being able to thumb through the pages and go "ooh. Look at that!" which means it's going to look light on content.

I am not a fan of the N64, but i enjoyed the article, and the list will be useful when booting !

Would love a article/list like this for the Saturn or Dreamcast, or even the megadrive.

The Jet Set Willy 2 stuff was interesting too. I remember at the time it very disappointing, but I did't realise there was so much extra content.

Readers of Retro Gamer might be mildly interested in my little thing I did for sack Man 64s site yesterday about Street Fighter.

Makers of Retro Gamer might possibly want to pay me vast sums of cash for similar stuff one day. :eyebrows:

At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, what exactly were you missing out on by mapping mediums to the L & R buttons? Ive always played mapping lights the L & R buttons - was I missing out on something as well?

I used to be pretty good, could beat the game on the highest difficulty with a couple continues, etc., could do a double or triple dragon punch etc. What were we missing?

Has RG ever done an article on fan translations? I can't remember.

One of the Fitch brothers is on the Geekbox podcast last week and was talking about the work he did on the fan translation of Radical Dreamers and it was pretty interesting.

It rang a bell as Radical Dreamers is shown in the Obscuramachina article about the Satellaview.

Incentive Software archives article was great! It was interesting to read how they went along making games and simply decided to wind things up when they felt ready to. No big flop game, no hardward addon etc. Really good stuff - and I'd forgotten all about the The Graphic Adventure Creator.
