PTD Edition is the main game plus the DLC add-on ("Artorias of the Abyss") which features at least two of the best bosses in the game, some great story hints, and a talking mushroom. PS the translation was done by your favourite japanese/english translator.

The game without the DLC is awesome and doesn't suffer from being played without the DLC, but if you get hooked then you'll want to play all of it.

Cale: for crossbows you just lock on and press shoot but for other bows there's an aim button once you've equipped the weapon, I think left bumper? Then hold attack button to draw the bow and release to fire. You also need to equip arrows for either kind of bow or you'll have nothing equipped to shoot.

Thanks! Are we talking about Imp? If so, then wow.

Imp-san wa yuumei desu!

I've gone back to dark souls lately. I spent ages getting wilded up by that sow Atorias, but then completely changed tack and stopped trying to survive his attacks, and instead concentrated on killing him before he killed me. I achieved this by taking off all of havel's gear and basically making my man into some kind of high-powered mincing transexual mage, with a simply delightful headdress. Once I've taken down manus it's back to the 4 kings, I think. Then back down to the godawful tomb of the giants.

I'm scared to start Dark Souls. Partly because I feel guilty about abandoning Demon's Souls.

Actually I think I'm just scared to start any of the epic games I haven't opened yet. I just don't have the time any more :( Quick catch up on EG, few goes of TxK, a few levels of EDF 2025 and that's my lot.

Scared of getting back into SF too.

Scared.

Back on topic, I'm seeing a film tonight titled Stray Cat Rock Delinquent Girl Boss. Sounds amazing, right?

You're not done with the DLC just because you've taken down Manus!

Newbie time. I've been playing this game for about a month now, and I love it. Still only getting one win in every five or six fights, but when losing is fun, who cares? As I'm an achievement junkie, I'm working on ranking up each character to C. Ryu and Ken done, now playing as Honda. I find I'm having more success as the big guy, I'm guessing because most players will be used to fighting against Ryu/Ken-alikes, and will have developed solid tactics against them, but they're not so sure how to cope with Honda.

To my shame, 150+ fights later, I have JUST found out that the ultra combo meter still works when only half full. I bought the Games On Demand version (when it was 20 quid, boo), so maybe I should go read the online manual ...

My only annoyances thus far are:

1) Players who leap over you constantly, seeming to kick you with their arse, and

2) Guy

Any advice welcomed.

Do you mean your Super meter? You can use EX moves which take bars from your meter. Ultra meter is a different meter. It flashes and makes it obvious when you can use it. To do a super, the super meter has to be full.

Block in the opposite direction (ie - forward) when you're being crossed-up.

SSFIV is an amazing game, so try to stick with it despite the annoyances. It's definitely my favourite game of the last generation and possibly of all time.

1. Crossups! Block in the opposite direction if you think they'll hit you on the back half of your body (well, technically if you think they'll hit you after the central point of their character has moved past the central point of your character, but that's harder to visualise!) Usually they'll land behind you if they've hit you with a crossup attack - there are exceptions that you'll learn in time, but that's a good rule of thumb for recognising which direction you should have blocked while you're learning.

2. Yeah, F that man.

Welcome to the best thread!

Also I love that that was your 1337th post.

Also also if you want to do a bit of a practice session on Xbox Live then just shout - there's a bunch of us who would be happy to play a few training games and stop to talk through things at points if it would help you learn. Basically we love talking about the game and will go to great lengths to encourage more people to play it, because it means we have more people to play it with.

Nah, I knew all about the EX/Super gauge, but I thought the Ultra one (the circular one) needed to be full. Lesson learned.

I've spent the last 15 mins reading the manual. Jesus, I know nothing! Dashing? Cancelling? What the ...?

I don't get much xbox time, but if anyone wants some easy wins, "peeveen" is the gamertag.

Ha, Guy is a bit of a hot topic in my local scene at the moment because Gunslinga's Guy destroyed everybody at the last out of town tournament we attended. I have even dusted off my own very ropey Guy recently so that he is at least occasionally featured during our casual sessions. He is very weird to fight against if you're not used to it as he has such an odd floaty jump but can also drop out of it at any time with his elbow. Very odd style of movement that doesn't make any sense when you're used to fighting Ryu and Ken.

If the problem is that he's jumping in and doing elbow drops on you all the time, many characters have a move that lets them duck under it and you can then hit him when he lands. Ryu can use crouching medium kick, for example.

If you're using Honda at the moment you don't have that option though. Try to make sure you have at least one EX meter stocked whenever you can so you have the option of EX headbutt to swat him away. Also if Guy doesn't have any meter you can attack him quite recklessly as he doesn't have a good dragon punch style mashable option to get you off him. Guy generally struggles against a very defensive Honda, so if you have more life than he does it's worth sitting back and holding onto your charge and then just reacting to what he does. He almost always has to attack you from the front at first because his jump is so slow and floaty, so if you're sat charging a headbutt he can have a hard time approaching. Also his flippy grab move can be avoided by crouching. If you stand up or jump up into the air to meet him you are quite likely to get grabbed.

If he's knocked you down and is jumping over you, he can either elbow drop to hit you in the front or do jumping medium kick to hit you in the back. This is something you just have to get used to seeing and try to react. Easier said than done if the Guy player is good though.

And yes, what Alistarr said, play some games with us and we can give many many pointers. I personally have at least a basic idea of how to use the majority of the cast, so if there's a character you want to learn or really hate fighting against I can take requests. Online training mode in Ultra SFIV is going to be so great for this sort of thing.

Welcome! As others have said, stick with it. It's the best thing.

I did a bit of ranking characters up to C before giving up, good fun! A few words of warning though:

-Some of the characters are really not newbie-friendly, either because they require good execution, or because you have to play them in quite a unique way to be effective (C. Viper, Fuerte, Guy, etc). So don't get too disheartened if you get beaten a lot when you try them out. You said losing is fun anyway, which is an excellent approach to take.

-I'm pretty certain that online points will be reset when Ultra is released. Presumably there will be some way to keep playing on AE, just like you can play Super now, but do bear that in mind.

-It's still a pretty good way to find a character you really like and want to main. So look forward to that, it's cool.

Anyway, do add me on XBL!

I don't like cabbage in any other context than coleslaw. I feel like I'm not really a true cabbage fan sometimes. Do you guys ever get that?

Also I am watching ESGN season two despite myself. Joeplus' Sky Sports analogy is absolutely spot on. World class players playing in the format I love the most is too good to turn down even if the whole thing makes me feel a little bit ill.

Additional also, I have finished Winter Brawl.

It was quite good, though the exhibition sets were disappointing. I loved every second of Marvel Grand finals and there was lots of quality in AE. Loved that Arturo, LuckyD and Jason Cole all got out of pools. Dhalsim victories are almost always victories for good Streetfighter. I always root for Arturo because I love his analytical approach to the game and his entirely legit playstyle. Honest characters, honest gameplay, all is right with the world when he wins. His set against Zeus in top 8 was magnificent too. He doesn't want to deal with Vega's awkward jumping normals and kara throw game and he knows that Vega is one of the very few characters who is vulnerable to rushdown from Dhalsim, so he decided to go completely rabid and do ST dive kick pressure as if that's still a thing in SFIV. LuckyD takes the same approach against Zeus and it seems like it might be Sim's best option in the match up. I used to love it when FChamp switched to a completely alien play style for specific match ups too.

Dhalsim and Vega in top 8 is a good thing. Dieminion clutching it out with Guile in a top 8 that also had a Cammy and both EG Rufii was nice to see as well. Dieminion is such an exceptionally good player. Rico Suave had a strong showing, particularly in teams. I think Abel is a bit of a stupid character, but he's also quite an exciting and explosive one, so I can deal with there being one very good one placing in tournaments.

Gamerbee completely dominated Zeus and Sanford in their exhibition matches. There are still only a handful of players in America who are ready for Gamerbee's Adon. It is ludicrous that he is still *the* Adon when everyone knows how strong the character is and moans about not knowing how to fight him. Sanford quite rightly had a bit of a rant at the East Coast players for failing to step up and challenge Gamerbee after he beat Zeus. Sanford knew he'd get beaten by Gamerbee but took the opportunity to play against him in a long set to try and learn something from it. More of the American players need to be as hungry as Sanford is at the moment if they ever want one of their own to win Evo.

Zeus had some key drops against Gamerbee that led to a more brutal scoreline than was perhaps deserved. Also, as much as I enjoy Arturo wins, I was a little bit disappointed that he beat Zeus in top 8 as I would have loved to see Zeus take on Ricky, Justin or KBrad again. He does amazing things in those bad match ups and it was a shame he didn't get another shot here. Somebody needs to put some money behind him and get him traveling because he could be one of the best if he gets the chance. Same situation with Smug as well. Every time I see him lose in tournament it's because he makes a crucial drop at a key moment because he isn't a seasoned tournament veteran. As hard as the Team PIE guys work, there is no substitute for grinding away on the tournament circuit and getting used to performing at majors. It's not surprising that Dieminion went from very good to world class when he started traveling all over the world to level up his game. Conversely, Sanford may never quite realise his full potential because he was stuck in the same scene for so many years.

Without spoiling anything, Marvel had some fun moments but I do get a bit tired by the top 8 stage at a lot of these events. The fun stuff is usually the pool qualifiers and the top 32/16. Thankfully players like Punisher, Rikir and PsychoChronic using weird characters keep things interesting at that level. For some of his games Rikir was running Tronne/Hsien Ko/Arthur, which is a magnificent line up. His set against Kenny in pools was probably my Marvel highlight of the weekend. Check it out here, particularly the unspeakably hype last game:

SoCal Regionals is looking stupendously good also. All of the exhibition matches are hugely appealing to me and the added spice of Wao and Michael Tan in the AE singles tournament only sweetens the deal. I am hype. Interesting to hear Alex Valle on the Gootecks and Mike Ross show (excellent episode this week by the way, Valle vs. Xbox live players is a joy to behold) mention that Twitch paid for Wao and Michael Tan to come over. Wonder if they'll be assembling a fighting game team any time soon. Would love to see it.

Welcome to the best thread peeven. :) SF can easily feel like a load of random nonsense when you first start noodling online, but suffering the occasional beatdown and looking at what killed you is the first step towards figuring out how to stop it. :D

If you want to enjoy online matches without all of the salt and cheap players, come join us in lobbies; we all have varying levels of expertise with the whole cast and it's lots of fun. :) Plopboy has a list of gamertags of SF players here if you want to add mans.
