Ultra Street Fighter IV

GGs just now, joe - sorry to rush off so soon but I just had 20 minutes there in between finishing doing other, more boring stuff and sleeping! I kept saving meter for super and didn't land it once (grrrr). Was pleased to block at least some of your ultra 2 setups despite them feeling trickier than last time we played :-) good stuff.

Yep, GGs man! Your hit-confirm combos, the variety of jumpins, and that tricky instant overhead mixup were all noted with appreciation. It was tough to get in on you, with the sensible fireballs and the buttons. I was pleased that I managed to be cool-headed when defending a life lead sometimes. Much more fun than ranked. Must. stop. playing. ranked. Also I really should learn some proper Ultra setups rather than just using it to get the pressure off then improvising. If her focus attack range was better Rose would have a kind of Snackish Special with the threat of Level 3.

Afterwards I played a bit of very fun local fighter with my flatmate, me on 50% handicap random, going over the basics. He can throw, fireball, and do basic charge moves, so that's cool. I'm sure we'll play again in four months or so.

Ooh FYI Imp and other board game fans - I spent a little while at the lovely Thirsty Meeples on Sunday. The sight of the game shelves made me positively drool.

Sadly we only had time for Bananagrams and a couple of games of 7 Wonders rather than a full day. 7 Wonders is amazing because picking a Wonder is like choosing a character, right down to the Ultra (side A or B). The guy next to me actually had a main.

Excellent session of Dragonman ranked at SFO House #2 this evening. I kept winning with Rose and then handing over to Brylarke's Cammy, who could not seem to win at all tonight. GG against him AndyGT; I warned him in time that you would taunt at the beginning too! Still ended on 3,000PP, but if Ant was in better form we could easily have hit 3,500 tonight.

I checked the stats at the end and Dragonman Rose has 56 wins out of 66 games. :D

Oh man, that sounds like a great time!

I just got a semi co-operative game called Archipelago last week, and it's properly fantastic. It's incredibly complex, I mean, there are separate import and export based economies for trading goods and money, and so many systems bouncing off each other shit gets crazy. But the unique thing is that each player is working towards their own secret goal, as well as one public one, which means towards the end of each game the gauntlet is truly thrown as players try their best to grab as many points as possible when they suspect one of the (hidden) game ending conditions is about to be met. Slightly dubious colonialist theme aside, it's an incredibly well balanced set of complimentary systems and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I came dead last in the first game, despite being the one who was teaching the rules. Second time around I took a good while to consider my Wonder, chose the one that gives you bonus money at each stage, and absolutely rinsed the cards of my neighbours on the way to a balanced victory. Rose players love using resources properly.

Imp, Archipelago sounds awesome - if you're ever short of a player for that or anything else let me know. My new year's resolutions of more healthy cooking and more boardgames are going well so far, I've nailed vegetable risotto and my flatmates love Settlers and CAH.

There's a great Club Sega in west Shinjuku with a big basement full of fightmans. Pretty good Taito Station in east Shinjuku from which I stole an excellent ashtray. Still feel guilty about that but it really is a great ashtray.

I ended up going to quite a few arcades all over Tokyo but the Shinjuku Club Sega was indeed the best. I won my first match so was pretty hyped, but then was completely hammered in every single round after for the next hour before I slipped out in embarrassment.

Yes, the Guile Chun matches were awesome - really funny what a stark contrast it is to do a dozen matches of Guile Rufus and then switch it up like that!

In other news I decided last night that I'm switching to Juri. I can do all the trials and I like to press buttons. Please someone tell me everything I need to know.

There's a restaurant near Leicester Square called Shoryu, and in front of one of the doors there's a sign saying "SHORYU: NO ENTRY".

I really wanted to take a picture, caption it "Daigo", and post it here, but I was running late for a Stewart Lee show. Priorities.

I wish I had a good food update, but our last attempted SFO meal out was a disaster. Tried to go to Red's but they'd had a power cut and weren't seating any more customers. Then tried to go Cattle Grid as a very poor substitute but they don't have wheelchair access (I thought that was a requirement of some sort?). So we ended up going to Handmade Burger Co. Never been a fan of that place. Vastly overpriced for what you get, but one small consolation is that they do malts and shakes and the like. So I got a malted butterscotch thing that was wonderful and almost made up for the subpar and overly expensive food. Hmph.

Off topic stuff:

Been catching up on months and months of Wednesday Night Fights that I'd missed. They helpfully put the top 3 on their Youtube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/levelupseries/videos for anyone who's interested.

Snake Eyes is understandably the top dog, but underneath him they have Marq Teddy (Guy), Keno (Balrog), TTC Chris (Ken), Online Tony (Seth), Alex Valle (Ryu), Filipinoman (Rose) and Veloc1raptor (Gouken) all putting in exceptional performances. All of those players are certainly candidates for best user of their respective characters nationally, and in Snake Eyes' case it's hard to argue against him being the best in the world on that front. I like that there's a little character arms race happening too. Everyone is learning a pocket Sagat to try and unseat Snake Eyes, but then Snake Eyes has picked up Oni in case he needs to switch away to fight the Sagats. It's also always a pleasure watching Valle play and also hearing his take on the game when he's commentating.

They've all been great so far, but I'd recommend this one as it opens with Valle vs. Chris playing Ryu vs Ken at a very high level. Such a classic match up but one we rarely get to see in big tournaments:

Chris' counter hit game is ridiculous.

On the Valle commentary front, there was one set recently where the finishing sequence was:

NGL Chris (Ken) with Snake Eyes (Gief) on 1% life knocked down in the corner.

Chris went for meaty fierce DP, Snake Eyes did wake up EX green hand to go through it and then landed ultra for the win.

Valle then talked through both players' wheel of options in this scenario:

1) Chris goes for jab DP instead. This beats EX green hand by staying active in the right spot for longer and outlasting the invincibility. It might trade, but a 1% life Gief will still die. If it's horribly mistimed, Snake Eyes will get through but Chris will land in time to punish with another DP.

2) Snake Eyes knows that jab DP is the option, so does lariat instead. Jab DP doesn't have the required invincibility to beat lariat, so Gief wins clean.

3) Chris knows that lariat is the counter to jab DP, so instead he does instant overhead jump back fierce to stuff it and kill Gief.

4) Snake Eyes knows that jump back fierce beats the lariat, so he blocks it and does standing roundhouse to punish it on the way down.

Valle and Snake Eyes have played each other so often and are both such masters of the match up, that if they played it, it's entirely possible that Valle would just grab him instead and everyone would wonder why Snake Eyes didn't do anything. Streetfighter.

Oh, and Xian's academy is magnificent. Picking out individual moments from match ups and then dissecting them in the lab and explaining that the majority of so-called 50/50 situations are anything but. He's such a clever young man.
