Ultra Street Fighter IV

If you can explain to them what a Shoryuken is, how about this:

Insane first fight, great match overall, brilliant commentary, and The Beast doing what he does best.

Honestly I could watch that first round a hundred times and I'd always crack a smile.

Yes, sorry about that Hegg. I wasn't playing, but by the time I'd tried to rattle off who you are and how I know you it was too late to stop Loz going in. I should have just blurted out "he'll taunt at the beginning!"

GGs earlier this evening, Ig and Joffo - I think I got about 75 matches in total and a whole bunch of great Chun/Ryu learning. Hope to catch you again soon!

Man, your Chun U1 punishes were awesome! How many times did I resist SBing for 30 plus seconds, have a short exchange, then throw a Boom and eat an Ultra? So impressive, and annoying in equal measure.

I'll be around about 4ish this pm for good couple of hours if you or anyone else is around?

Props to all for the recent games; spectator-voted character select was as fun as ever, but it needs an in-game equivalent so that we have less of those voice chat mix-ups:

Gen / Ken

Guy / Guile

Dan / Cammy (okay I think people just try to get away with that one)

Also, being given 'Rog leads me to pick Dirty Bull irrespective of the matchup. It's just too much fun. :P

Guys, serious question. If I wanted to show someone one video or one fight, to convince them that Street Fighter 4 is the most beautiful thing ever made by people, what video would it be?

Playing the game is what makes you realise it's great - not watching it - but since you've given us a great excuse to just repost crazy videos then my answer is that it kind of depends who you're convincing and what they care about.

If you want to explain the fundamentals:

If you love the hype:

If you want to get all emotional about community events:

But really of course those things are all just contributory elements, and at its core Street Fighter is all about running sets to see who is the best, so you should probably just pick a random day in Sanford Kelly's life and show them that:

(you can probably skip all the the last couple of minutes of the first video, but the end sets up the next two...)

You should probably just sit them down and nudge them into playing a few (hundred) games, though! We will all be here to offer advice if they need it :-)

Evangelising the beauty of SF can be a thankless task. Opinions I've heard from others vary from "it's just mans hitting buttons, there's no skill" to "it's too complicated and I don't know what to do". In any case, I agree that high level Ryu play covers a lot of what makes SFIV good, but might not be that exciting to watch for people who don't know what's going on... so yeah, a hype match like Daigo/Poongko is a decent alternative. :)

Wonderful, wonderful long set with alistarr yesterday. Lots and lots of tense comebacks too. Apologies to Hegg for not sticking around later; I got dropped out of spectator mode then returned to an empty lobby, presumably because the lady I fancy who lives in my flat came home and her icloud started syncing. Guh.

Street Fighter!

I just started playing this a couple of weeks ago. I am hopeless at it, too many SF2 habits to break, but boy is it some glorious technicolour fun. My last online match was a ridiculous ultra combo finish comeback, and I suspect you never forget your first time.

Anyway I just read the last half dozen pages of this thread and have no idea what most of you are on about! :)

Please ask questions. We (I) love answering them at length and in painstaking detail. A lot of the terminology makes simple concepts seem more complicated than they are, and some of it is used for convenient shorthand more than anything else.

Yes, as JLM said, ask questions in here. We will answer you and we will love doing so. Get stuck in then ask us about any matchups you have issues with or even general advice for the character you've chosen. Otherwise we'll just rattle off puns and ramble about coleslaw. And we'll love doing that too.

Also add us all as friends and join us in lobbies :D we all have varying levels of skill and expertise with particular characters and things so you can just jump in and have fun. Most of us play on Xbox Live with a few people also owning cheap Steam copies for PC...

More fifth character hype:

A new announcement regarding Ultra Street Fighter IV is coming next month, Capcom confirmed on Capcom Unity. The announcement is almost certainly related to the mysterious fifth new character of the game.

The new announcement will be made at the Final Round XVII event, which is going to be held from March 14th to March 16th. A few months after the original announcement and after so much teasing, its finally time to learn who this mysterious character is.

Last month Capcom confirmed that the game is going to receive a new YouTube feature. You can learn more about it by going here.

Ultra Street Fighter IV includes five new characters as well as new stages, new modes and features and much more. Four of the five new characters have already been confirmed: Rolento, Hugo, Poison and Helena. The fifth new character has yet to be revealed.

These four characters will not be taken straight from another Capcom fighting game, Street Fighter X Tekken, but have been fully reworked for the new Street Fighter IV revision.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early June. The PC digital upgrade version and PS3/Xbox 360 retail release will launch sometime during August. The upgrade version will be fully compatible with Super Street Fighter IV.

In other news, I just posted something in the SF folder. Go see! Er, unless you don't use Twitch.

Quite a weekend of fightings. All night session at SFO house #1 on Friday, then went to a tournament at Edge Hill University on Saturday, then had SFO casuals all day today. Will do some writings about it all soon.

For now, though, it amuses me that White Daigo is becoming more and more like real Daigo. In this instance, traveling to other regions and winning their qualifying events for major tournaments. He went up to the Road to Hypespotting event in Aberdeen today and won the whole darn thing, beating BigFool and Miligano in the process. Sweet revenge for them coming down and taking top 2 at the last tournament in his area.

In other BigFool news, I beat him in ranked with Dragonman Chun on Friday. I have the replay saved. I am quite pleased.

Thanks muchly for those videos joeplus and quasimod.

My overall aim is to demonstrate why punchings on Street Fighter is also one of the greatest collective works of art made by humans.
Personally I think there has never been a better combination of artists, musicians, programmers and producers that over the past 20 years or so have made anything so close to perfect than Street Fighter 4 (Ultimate Ultra Arcade Edition)

Can someone else please post some words about street fighter? We need to bump ourselves onto the next page because every time I open the thread I end up rewatching those Sanford videos I posted, and I can't afford to keep wasting that amount of time every couple of hours.

Edit: haha.

I finished reading that article about SF2 today. It really is an excellent read and I can't recommend it enough.

I'm not playing SFIV just now so that I can have at least a half-hearted stab at some of the hundreds of games in my backlog. So in between games of EG, I'm playing stuff like Cave Story, Kaido Racer, Umihara Kawaze and I've even started the first Professor Layton game. although that's not really grabbing me if I'm honest. Nice art and so on, but pretty standard logic puzzles so far.

So yeah. Street Fighter.

Did you play that Umihara Kawase game because of the Game Center CX episode? I've always wanted to give that a go. How does it hold up, Camel?

In competitive gaming news I went to a Netrunner tournament yesterday in London's charming zone 4. I came in the top 16, and netted myself a very homoerotic alternative art card. Joffo would sorely approve, I suspect. I played a character called Andromeda, who is a bit like Seth, because she has too many options, and a corporation called NBN, who are thematically like Fox News, but play kind of like Ibuki, since you either get sucked into their vortex or destroy them before they can escape and launch a comeback.

It's always been on my radar, but yes, when I got to that episode, I decided it was time to give it a go. It holds up brilliantly. There is a DS release which has both the PSOne and SFC versions. The SFC version is the one to play. I've been playing it on SFC mostly because I hate the DS Lite d-pad. It's superb and you should definitely give it a go. It's nails though.

I think it's an enhanced port. It feels different to play and the levels are more ambiguous so it's not always obvious where a platform begins and ends for eg. There's a PSP version too, but apparently it's not great. There's a 3DS version coming to the eShop I believe.

It's such a good game, but like I say, it's pretty ruthless at times. Enemies spawning right in front of you for eg. I managed to get to level 14 which is when the flying fish are intoduced and it just became too difficult for me. I will get back to it though. So much fun swinging about with the fishing rod.
