The last episode is sooo good. Broly, Smug. All excellent.

Mm, I posted it before watching it, but it's ace. The end of the last match was great...

I'm glad I'm not alone with the panicked "what's the Ultra?!" moments in our lobbies

Mike "Dirty Bull Action" Ross.

Say, any news on the new episode of the Gootecks & Mike Ross Show on Daily Motion? The iPhone app is terrible, I think the search function does not work properly. Has the show already been cancelled :(

I am hype. Also I decided we should film a documentary were we try to train our mums to play Street Fighter then organise a tournament. Then the other half could be them training us to play Bingo or whatever.

I've got yet another man in work who plays Street Fighter now, as well as Marvel, but this one knows a great deal more about Street Fighter than the last one, referencing different players including Smug and Wao and stuff. He'll probably beat me at Street Fighter (he will not beat me at Street Fighter).

Guys Nidhogg is the best game.

Yes it is. I had a lovely set against Donut earlier.

Think it could do with a few more stages, though, and the spawn system's a bit weird. And it's very hard to see what's going on on the Cloud stage.

The singleplayer's well worth a look, btw. AI doesn't jump much but you learn a lot about the swordplay quite quickly.

Mr. AJ, seriously, come to the SFO tournament at the end of the month. I can offer a place to stay if it helps. Also we only have clangers from Teesside as our T. Hawk representative and he's a massive fraud.

I am going to play some nidhogg this week. I am excited because you gents are men of taste and seem most pleased with it.

Popped into this thread to catch up on Ultra news, as I thought you'd all be gearing up for its release. I'm stunned by the release date on the official website...

  • Digital Upgrade Version: June 2014 – $14.99/€14.99
  • Retail & Digital Full Version: August 2014 – $39.99/€39.99

I thought this was due Feb, sure I read that somewhere. Thats still quite a long way off seeing as this was annouced half way through last year. Wow

I'm just mad that I'll be buying it three times again so I can have a pointless disc version that gets a patch via download a couple of months later anyway.

By mad I mean giddy with excitement, obviously.

But yes, it feels a long way away. It's okay though because the current version is the best version there's been, so we may as well get as much out of it as possible while people are still playing it!

Do you think 2012 is better than straight up Super?

I definitely prefer the AE revision to Super because even if Super could have been considered more balanced there's just a lot more fun things you can do in AE, which is all I really care about. Makoto's light fukiage being useful is a big one, Dee Jay's more practical links and easier knee shot, Dan's genuinely useful close normals and Ibuki's corner juggles after EX spin kicks. Wee things like that. Super was a far more exciting transition than AE was, of course.

Ultra does still feel a long way away. I'm still having plenty of fun with the current version. By the way, I'd never considered the four button throw tech option select until seeing it mentioned on eventhubs recently: pressing LP+LK alongside MP+MK after blocking something like Cammy's spiral arrow (if she's spaced it safely) will thwart her throw attempt and if she goes for a cannon spike instead will focus, since it doesn't armour break unless it's a reversal. Wild. Would that work against Adon too? Does he have a practical close range armour breaker? I have the 50/50 after a blocked EX wall dive.

I guess they could just delay their throw. Or do some fast light normals to hit confirm? Though I guess I could focus backdash instead. Oh! What about after Rose's slide? Is Rose's throw genuinely untechable if she kara-cancels her cl.mk or is that nonsense? I hate Rose.

I'm in work at 7am.

Yeah, I think Super was amazing but AE 2012 just beats it. I also think a lot of the nonsense we see now in AE was probably already there in Super and just hadn't been figured out yet, and if we were still playing Super then we'd have found all that stuff by now and be complaining about it.

Yeah I like v.2012 better than Super, mostly for the same reasons as Joffo. Loads of the buffs the weaker characters have been given since Super are tremendous, in terms of both fun and balance. Makoto is a great example of a character who didn't feel complete in Super but has been fixed since. Gouken, Dudley, Dee Jay, Hakan, Dan and loads more as well.

I also agree that a lot of the derpy stuff was in Super and simply hadn't been figured out yet. Viper in particular has had mostly nerfs since then, so she's about as balanced now as you can get with such a poorly designed character. Fuerte too, as he still had the insane Ultra 2 damage in Super. Akuma still had the silly array of options he does now, it's just that Infiltration hadn't quite peaked yet (though was still in the Evo top 3) and the character was (and still is) surprisingly unpopular amongst top players, particularly in the West. Fei was already stupid as well, it's just that it took someone with Fuudo's machine like approach to the game to showcase just how stupid.

AE's biggest fault (aside from Yun) was that it went too nerf-happy on a bunch of characters who didn't deserve it. 2012 fixed the vast majority those mistakes as well.

2012 still has a few of the issues left over from AE, most notably Cammy being a problem, characters who have been buffed in every version since Vanilla ending up a little OTT (I'm looking at you, Sakura) and Akuma still having far too many options and a sweep that is much better than he deserves. However, none of the top tier characters are unbeatable and the game is still remarkably balanced given the size of the roster and the character variety. A character specialist who puts in the required work can feasibly make top 8 with most of if not the entire cast. Smug and Zeus have emerged as two of the most exciting up and coming American players using Dudley and Vega respectively, Xian showed everyone that Gen is top tier, Snake Eyes took a major with Gief, Native Impact sometimes even makes Ted Hawk look like a threat. The fact that new characters are still winning majors for the first time is such an excellent thing, and for all the talk of Super having near perfect balance, I expect it would be much harder for a character like Makoto to win a major in that game than it would for Haitani to do it now.

The gap between the bottom tier and the top is much narrower than it was in Super. Super's strength was that it was harder to pick out obvious "S-tier" characters. With AE2012 there may be a clear top 5 or so but it's not nearly as unlikely for a character from the bottom 5 to suddenly make an impact.

The main reason I have reservations about the big changes happening in Ultra is that AE2012 is so very, very good.

Have people aside from Alistarr watched Defend the North yet? People should watch Defend the North.

I got really really drunk last night. I am dying at work today. Dying. Do not have school night drinking in me anymore. I still really want to go to the Huddersfield thing but I may pass out before then.

I'm hoping to get finished with work shortly and hop on for a fight or two at around 16.30 if anyone's around? First dibs goes to Nidhogg players if any are available, but if not then I'm happy to get bopped in any game I own :-)

Thanks for the kind offer mate. I have been planning on attending all month. Myself and Infexious have been in the training room as a result. Infexious' Dudley, Guile and Ryu are as scary as ever and he's still best player I have ever seen using anti-airs, Daigo aside. He's still rusty on his combos and links though so I wouldn't expect a major impact if he does attend. The main problem I have is my pad is wireless and I'd have to use a charging cable which I assume is not allowed? I love the D-Pad and as far as I'm aware you can't get a wired version with this particular D-Pad :(

Is the tournament still held at Patriot Games then?

Dark Souls

This game. Wow. I haven't spent so long doing the same thing over and over in a game for the longest time. I love it. I love how many times I end up staring at the ceiling in disbelief at how I allowed myself to do something so stupid, losing a few thousand souls in the process. This is not the game to attempt shortcuts and will punish your dumb ass for trying.

I was concerned about playing it because I don't have a great deal of spare games time and I didn't want to play something so notoriously hard and one where progress would likely be so slow. But it's not unfair - just hard and will punish you at every opportunity. Considering I played that first I'd compare it to Volgarr - you know what you did wrong. Don't do it again unless you want to die and repeat the same bit all over again.

So anyway, obvious drivel over. I'm in Undead Burg and, after about three days of trying, finally defeated the Black Knight. Truth be told, it was a hollow (arf) victory as I accidentally stumbled across a cheap way of defeating him whilst researching the game in general. But still, progress is progress and I'm now, I guess, going to fight Taurus Demon.

Do I need to summon help or can I do it on my own? How does summoning work? If I or the other person dies is that it, summoning wasted / over? How on earth am I going to deal with those fucking archers as you enter the area? They're wrecking my shit.

Aaargh! I just watched you both play a bunch of that. The second to last match was an absolute epic! Haha, such wonderful grass caution from Mr Yellow and constant back and forth drama. The point where Mr Yellow almost made off to the right only to die from a sword throw bouncing off the wall in front was wonderful. And then in the last match where there were three consecutive door open/close clashes of swords. And all the rolling and dive-kicking and dancing and Real Turner the Worming. What an excellent looking game.
