Also also, regarding Gootecks and Michael; there were a lot of references to Mike Ross having a dreadful year and I'm seen more than one "Mike Ross is homeless!" thing, maybe connected to that brief cancelled IGN deal. What's the full story with all of that?

Yeah, a reference to his short lived show "Mike Ross' Neighborhood".

I have resolved to learn more recipes this year, which is proving to be rather more rewarding and less difficult than expected. Butternut squash & courgette risotto was awesome, though alas, wildly over-saged at the last minute.

I made butternut squash risotto the other night! But with kale. Also, pearl barley in place of arborio rice. The barley was kinda chewy. I didn't like it as much.

I have prawns and black rice at home. Can I use brown miso paste in some way with those? I bought the miso paste because it was stacked at the tills in Whole Foods and I'm a total sucker. I always upsize my meals if they ask in McDonalds and I'll always order whatever side the waiter recommends in restaurants. Even though the main reason he's recommending it is probably because they have a surplus of it round back going out of date soon.

I'll probably play some Street Fighter when I get home. It's a good videogame.

Why not both, in alistarr vs Camel tradition :-)

You're a later-in-the-evening kind of person, right? Maybe a 9pm start one evening that suits you?

All you other people should come back from your other games too.

Sorry for replying to this so late.

After 9 is perfect for me, yes. I'll figure out which evenings I'm free next week and get back to you asap.

I've been playing a lot of Persona 4 Golden. It's pretty good. Also Camel has been thoroughly beating me at Everycunt's Golf while we exchange Street Fighter golf puns. asynchronous multiplayer is great. I haven't won a single game. I did unlock some wild Scottish metalhead though, so that's nice.

I tried to do a few trials in SFxT on the vita during lunch. Some of the more complex ones are frustrating on a handheld though, like Ibuki's HJC nonsense.

Standing MP hit confirm into super deserves many props. It amazes me that Lud is so consistent with that.

Oh, one other observation about PC Ranked is that we got several messages and they were all absolutely lovely. Very refreshing. I beat some guy's Guile with random select Yang (Yes Allystah and Iggy, I won ranked matches with Yang!), and he sent a message "man you even went random select and still destroyed me. You're really good dude!" I wanted to cry at that. Awww. Lots of others along the lines of "you really force me to think about how I'm playing, ggs mate!" as well. It's sort of a shame as well though, as the ability to type messages on keyboard could lead to some lengthy and creative rage mail and I was hoping to get at least one of those. Oh well.

Lovely pre-teatime set Joffles, super stuff.

Ig - sorry I ignored you later in the night, at that point I was taking it in turns with my girlfriend on ranked (would you believe). Bye bye points, but it was quite funny. Couldn't bring myself to type that all out on the stick.

Yeah that was fun. Ate some serious E.Ryu combos that were a joy to be hit with. Apologies for some weird Ultras I'm trying out stuff like punishing fireballs. The problem is the line between prediction and reaction. :-)

Also thanks for ggs with Hegg and Alistarr. Mr Starr apologies for those last couple of games, I was distracted and clockwatching and probably should have ended a couple of games sooner. Also my mic resynched itself and wouldn't go back, which was annoying. Some great Rufus Guile matches before that tho. I do love that matchup.

Back when we did the last rllmuk league I learnt a weird thing about Rufus vs Honda whereby the normal Rufus left-corner setup for a crossup divekick that lands outside of the corner doesn't work vs Honda, because at the point you press the button for the divekick then Honda's rising hitbox places Rufus on the other side of him already, so if you hold df+MK for divekick then you end up just getting a normal j.MK which whiffs and lands you in the corner - to get the divekick in that situation you actually have to hold db+MK.

I didn't get to make any use of this knowledge against Revival because I barely got him anywhere near the corner what with him being busy hitting me in the face and throwing me on the ground, but before that demoralising defeat I was excited because it seems like not many Rufus players keep this in mind - I found videos of Justin Wong messing it up, and when I posted about it on SRK then Andreas replied with a video of him losing a match thanks to forgetting about it - so I figured very few Honda players would have had much practice of blocking that setup. Sadly nobody plays Honda any more so that's that, just another bit of useless knowledge about an early 21st century videogame.

But today I fought a high BP/PP Honda for the first time since the rllmuk league, and in the last round of our last game I landed him in the corner with an ultra that took him down to pixels, and I totally remembered that useless bit of knowledge and I held the wrong direction as I jumped in despite how weird it felt, and my divekick worked, and - as hypothesised - the Honda did not know how to block it so I won.

Anyway, I'm just popping online for a bit of fighting now. I kind of fancy playing a different fighting game at some point so if anyone fancies that then just let me know. I have 3SOE, HDR, MVC2, VF5FS, UMVC3, SFxT, KOF13 and Skullgirls sitting here never getting played. Alternatively just send me an invite for AE which I actually know how to play.

It's been a while since I've had chance to do any fighting in the streets - having a child (next-generation sequel) really affects the amount of spare time you have for ignoring your family and playing man punching simulators.

Discovered that a http://www.okdiners.com/'>roadside American diner near us serves a bit of Mexan today - popped in for a burger but plumped for the burrito. Places that are nearby are extra-convenient with a young'un as they generally increase your startup when attempting to leave the house by about half an hour as the execution required to pack everything into the car is pretty tight. She has a half-hour swimming pool training mode session each week and it takes approximately two hours all in...

Anyway. The burrito was alright I guess, though a bit cheap. It had a favourable matchup against the takeaway place in Derby which is proper dirty nonsense, but wasn't really close to being Dedicated London Burritoery-tier. On the IVanilla scale I'd probably give it a Guile out of Sagat.

Thanks for the games :-) and for reminding me that I have a copy of the 3rd strike strategy guide - maybe next time we play I'll remember that Oro has an air throw...

Yesss, ggs :) My execution has gone to pieces as usual, and since I've gone from SF4 to Marvel to SF3 lately I have no idea what I'm doing. I was quite pleased when I interrupted your rose throw with a Genei-Jin activation and still parried the rose, but that was probably the peak of my skill during the session. :P

We should all play 3rd Strike; it's a good game.

So much fighting this weekend. SFO House #1 casuals/Defend The North stream watching from 4pm til 3am on Saturday, then SFO itself in town on Sunday afternoon, then more PC Ranked and Defend The North at SFO House #2 until about 11pm. So much fighting. Highlight from Sunday was challenging my money match opponent at the end of the month to a Dudley/Sak FT5. Last time we played in casuals he won more than he lost in that match up for the first time and was far too pleased with himself. Ended up winning the FT5 5-2, then he wanted to run it back immediately and I won 5-2 again. His Sakura is getting better every time but he still has a tendency to bet the round on a hard read, which is extremely risky against Dudley.

I am dying at work today because I got hooked on the Defend the North stream and continued watching it when I got home. AE in particular was a fantastic tournament and everyone should watch the archives. Here are some things about it:

I've been going on about Team PIE for a bit now and waiting for them to do real damage at a tournament. This one was organised by them, so there was a lot of buzz around them and their chances of taking it. They ended up making quite a splash, with Smug making top 8 and Zeus WINNING A MAJOR WITH VEGA. I can't say enough good things about Zeus' Vega play as it's near flawless on all fronts, but for me it's the way he deals with horror match ups that sets him apart from any other Claw users. I've seen him beat Ricky Ortiz's Rufus and now I've seen him beat K Brad's Cammy in an extended set. His use of focus, back dash, jump back fierce, jump back roundhouse and air grab to escape all the horrible pressure Vega usually struggles to find answers for is truly exceptional. I'm stealing a lot of his stuff to add to my Chun game for sure.

Aside from that, his hit confirms are a cut above any other Vega I've seen. As well as the always impressive low jab one frame link confirms, he also manages to turn any hit from a jump in into the best damage available. He'll also do stuff like walk up cr. mk (counter hit) and then confirm another cr. mk into EX Barcelona. At times it looks like he has charge timing down to the millisecond. A hit confirm monster with a character who can make hit confirming very difficult. His stand short/cr. mk/kara grab/cosmic heel mix ups are ridiculous too, and he appears to have specific set ups for the entire cast. Some of the cross up fierce shenanigans in particular are disgusting. Fantastic player and, like the rest of team PIE, a character specialist who has put in an inhuman amount of work to wring out every ounce of potential from his main chicken. The commentators were understandably amused by his claim that all of Vega's match ups are 5-5 or in Vega's favour, but when you see him play it often looks like it's true because he knows them so well.

The rest of the tournament was full of highlights too. Dieminion, Nuckledu, Smug, Sanford, Arturo, ChrisG, Lucky D, Native Impact, Spab Rog... lots of strong players and most of them put on a fine show. Smug played Sanford in top 16 and gave him the most savage beating I have seen Sanford take. Sanford was using Oni because Sagat loses the match up and this didn't go any better for him. The commentators even pointed out that they'd never seen Sanford lose so fast before. Brutal stuff.

ProFluke from Manchester managed to get on stream. They had a best of 3 winner stays on casuals thing happening during some down time. He fought against EMP Hiro and beat him quite convincingly. He managed to get a taunt in there and played to the cameras at every opportunity. We thought he might rein it at an American major, particularly one in New York, but he seemed completely undeterred. That was fun to watch. SFO Willo played a casual set against Flocker in Marvel and got murdered, but did manage to take a game! Taking a game off the Evo champ easily justifies the trip to New York I'd say.

Marvel had a disappointingly predictable and anticlimactic grand finals between the most usual of suspects, but a tournament long highlight was Punisher. Hawkeye on Point, Ironfist second and Raccoon in the back. Oddball teams with unexpectedly brilliant synergy and tech. are one of the most joyous things in Marvel and this one is no different. In this instance it's made all the better by the fact that Ironfist and Raccoon are two of the most crowd pleasing characters in the game. So much hype for his matches and it was thoroughly deserved. Yipes playing EMP Remix's team for the entire tournament as a tribute was a very nice touch, as were the memorial video they played and the speech from his girlfriend just before the Marvel tournament. I'm pretty sure I saw him at every East Coast tournament I've ever watched and he's clearly a big loss to their scene. Seeing Megaman Steve just about keeping it together on commentary was heart breaking to watch.

In contrast to that classy and sombre moment, there was also some hilariously embarrassing behaviour from CJ Showstopper. He had a match winning combo against Flux in their set, but his button got stuck half way through it. He told Flux this had happened and that he was going to pause the game. Then, when he paused the game, Flux decided to take the win. CJ was not a happy man. Lots and lots of popping off, it looked like it might get violent for a while and that CJ would be forcibly removed from the East Coast and sent back home. He quite literally stopped the show for a while. He calmed down after a while, and then decided to stand near the stream station and cheer loudly for Flux's opponents for the rest of the evening. When RayRay eliminated Flux you could hear CJ bellowing "GOOD SHIT RAY! GOOD SHIT!" above the noise of everyone else in the room. Methinks a big money FT10 at Winter Brawl might be on the cards. If that does happen I think CJ would lose quite badly though.

I must say I am fully sick of Zero May Cry, containing as it does the double whammy of Zero killing a whole team off one hit and Level 3 Vergil comebacks. It's insane to me that people criticise ChrisG for being boring when the other S-tier set up in the game is just the worst.

Lastly, the AE teams 5 vs 5 was full of hype. The vast majority of it was on Arturo's stream (Twitch.tv/NYCFurby) and then top 3 played out on Spooky's. It was the top 3 that I ended up watching into the wee small hours. Team EMP, Team Next Level and Team Pie. Beastly performances from Rubit's Hakan, Chin's Cody, Smug and Sanford. Only disappointing note was that Chris Hu went home early and left Team Next Level with a one man handicap that really cost them in losers finals. Still a great show though.

Oh, and a fairly big Amurrican FGC development is that ChrisG is leaving New York to move to California. That will shake things up quite a bit. It'll be interesting to see if the West Coast Marvel scene does a better job of challenging his absolute dominance or if he'll end up winning The Runback every week from now on. I'm sure FChamp is looking forward to his arrival.

Fighting games.
