Ultra Street Fighter IV

I've no idea. I was hoping you lot would come in and explain it. James Chen has been tweeting about it and folk are testing it now to see whether or not it's a glitch caused by some aspect of the training mode recording rather than being a true OS.

James Chen apparently streamed himself doing the same thing with Dan's cr.mk OS Ultra 1 to punish whiffs.

And here's Carlito's pal Neville Bamshew doing it with Gouken's counter:

And lastly here's some guy (on what looks to be a modded PC version with a horrible training stage backdrop?) replicating it using macros in versus mode to prove it's not a training mode glitch:

Some men on the internet have come up with a wildly technical idea as to why the proximity blocking thing works. Apparently the ultras above only work off a negative edge or something, and the window for hitting it is around 5f. The reversal window for when you come out of blockstun/ wakeup is also 5f, so the idea seems to be that when your character is interacting with a proximity guard hitbox then they gain a 5f reversal window, which allows for the above. Somehow.

Imagine that.

Went for a pre-Teesports session at SFO house yesterday. Was excellent fun. Played some srs bsns sets against Benners and Ghost with Chun. Gradually getting better at Chun vs Honda but it really is a horribly stressful match if Honda refuses to stop jumping. None of Chun's grounded anti-airs are reliable, focus back dash puts you nearer the corner and if you block a a jump medium punch you're immediately in the blender and at risk of huge damage. I started doing neutral jump roundhouse and jump back roundhouse on reaction to jumps and that thankfully made it a lot easier to manage. I know it's still meant to be a winning match up for Chun, but Honda's damage and that jumping medium punch means that it really doesn't feel that way a lot of the time.

Also played about lots and lots of Strekken. I have added new shenanigans to my Paul game Alistarr. Be afraid. Was pleased to go 6-5 against a guy who plays it as his main game. Got slapped about by Benners, but learned a fair bit in the process. I am still clueless against Yoshimitsu. I can't block his cross ups, I forget he has a DP and he gets free pressure with that sword spin vacuum thing. A bad jump in against Yoshi was costing me 35% at a time too as he has Marduk in the back to deliver astonishingly painful combo enders. Marduk has insanely powerful jump-ins too. Even for Strekken they're ridiculous, with the nightmarishly ambiguous jump medium kick and the jump fierce with a hitbox that even puts Sakura's to shame. Like Honda, the solution is to go air to air against him but it makes for a very stressful match when you know that he can jump on your head at any given moment.

I think this is going to be my permanent issue with Strekken; I have a good handle on my team and I know how to play the game, but a good two thirds of the match ups are completely alien to me. Fun trying to figure them out though. Fun doing 40% damage meterless Paul combos too. I slap the buttons so hard when doing Paul combos because they feel utterly, utterly amazing. In fact, I hit the buttons extra hard when doing anything with Paul. He's a beast and they should put him in Ultra. They can't call it Ultra anything if it doesn't have the top fighter in the universe.

Oh, and I "played" Savant at Marvel and got soundly, soundly thrashed. I am at an awkward stage with Marvel where I completely murder the players who are just picking it up but get murdered myself by everyone else because they're far too advanced for me. There is no one at SFO at the same level as me, and there is no one at that especially useful "better but not too much better" stage for me to level up against. I either maul my opponent to death or I don't get to play at all. Still have a good time either way, but it'd be good to make some progress on that game.

Loving these all day offline sessions at the moment though. Given my awful internet situation I think I'd have forgotten how to play by now if not for SFO, Heggwest and Allystah. Next stop Teesports. The talk is of an OverMostHeads vs White Daigo money match, which would be a truly beautiful thing.
