Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Haha, it's such a deliciously harsh format. Sit around for two hours and then fight a warmed-up OMH in a one game set, then sit around for another hour and step up against white daigo... in a one game set.

Poor Chun Li.

Evening all. Shameful that it's taken me a week to share Heggwest thoughts, I know. Ended up having an awful journey back on the Sunday*, and then a really weird and busy week. But here I am, now.

Cale - it should be said again, and again and again, that your generosity and hospitality was out of this world. It was such a great weekend, and it was so kind of you and your very special lady partner wife, to put it on for us. A million thanks to you both.

It was so great to see everyone, and I think most of the highlights have been covered. A few things I'd like to mention:

  • Thanks to all who took me ranting/huffing at various points with good grace and laughed along/at me (which I deserved). Mostly tiredness on my part (note to self: do not agree to FT10s past the midnight hour), but it was also because I'm a grumpy git. Think that's directed at JLM/Dudley combos that go on forever, IG/Guile's unbreakable-defence and Donut/Makoto constantly punching me in the face. Oh! And Alistarr/Rufus EX Messiah-fighter.
  • I really enjoyed playing as Bison and Hawk over the weekend. I think that if I got back into IV I'd spend my time playing as those two.
  • Singles tournament was amazing. I don't really remember the final in much detail (I forget my fights as soon as they happen), it just felt like this really long fun set between JLM and I, in which loads of characters were used. It was ace.
  • Team tournaments were wicked, glad we did that. Loved the tactics and shit-stirring, didn't love being beaten all the time really easily. Bastards.
  • Mexican food, street fighter, cheesy crisps and wicked Arsenal goals made for an amazing Saturday evening.

I really hope we can organise a get-together for the Ultra launch, even though it looks like it's gonna be a total mess ;)

Um, other things..

Imp - I added a new art print to my site today, said I'd let you know: http://thespacemerchants.co.uk/products/204158--fine-art-print-flight-by-deep-freeze-by-bob-ritter-1961.aspx

Camel (and other London folk) - my sci-fi film night is alive and kicking. Would love it if any of you came along. Details here: http://sciencefictiontheatre.co.uk/

*London car people - remember when we drove past Vauxhall and I considered getting out? Well guess where I ended up an hour later, drenched, and very pissed off. Fucking weekend train service.

I am watching right now! Is there more Jellum coming? I have no sound.

Haha you just missed it I think! They played the match for third place off-stream and SFO won it, don't know if JLM had to play though.

Ha, thanks for watching guys. OMH, White Daigo and Fuzzy are all much stronger players than me so I'm not too salty. Disappointed by the OMH loss the most though as I've beaten him with Chun before. In the third place play off I went first and took out three players, then Zishan took out the last two.

Really pleased with the turn out and the smooth running of the event. Definitely SFO's biggest undertaking to date and it was a huge success. Also Bradford didn't place, which makes me a happy man indeed.

Heggwest things.

I've not had two seconds to properly sit down and write up about Heggwest but really there's not much more I can add to what everyone else has already written. I think the first thing I can say is, in true acceptance awards style, thank you to Mrs Cale for letting me host it in our family home. Not only that, she tidied and cleaned everything up to get it all sorted for us. Thanks missus, you're alright.

I simply don't have the words to say how much I love Heggfests. I was lucky enough to attend the first one some 4 years (I think) ago that happened in Hegg's living room and all the other ones that the man himself has hosted so when that was no longer an option I really wanted to see if we could get another one off the ground. Thankfully we could and people were able to make the journey by trains, planes and automobiles in order to attend.

It's testament to you lot that not for one second did I think that it would be risky or even slightly problematic to invite you all into my house. Without even thinking about it over the course of the weekend I'd left folk alone in the house about 2 or 3 times to go and get food or Camel or whatever. Everyone is just totally on the level and are just there for giggles and punchings. Wonderful.

There were so many highlights - all of which have been covered by people who are far better at writing up this sort of stuff that I am - but suffice to say that it was great fun. I'm not sure overall just how many fights I had with people but it wasn't as many as I would have wanted. I remember a couple of lengthy sets with Camel (and we should certainly run that Abel mirror back sometime) but just a handful of matches with everyone else now and then including a paltry single match with Nate. I think I failed to play Joeplus at all which I'm really sad about.

Anyway, I want to say thanks to everyone who made it and I do hope it continues to happen on the regular. There was talk amongst the rooftop crew of doing it more than once a year which might take a certain je ne sais quoi away from it but, equally, would be totally awesome because that would mean Heggfest would happen more than once a year.

Selected highlights in no order:

Making people coffee and then boring them silly by going on about coffee all the time. There were lots of polite smiles and nods. You are all patient and kind people.

Camel bringing not one but two bags of coffee with him. Excellent man.

Working out that we could and would have Mexican food after all.

The en mass Heggwest trip to Sainsburys. It was a little like we were all on day release and there was something delightfully strange about walking round my local supermarket and seeing folk off of the internet in various aisles.

My grumpy and mostly elusive cat being neither grumpy nor mostly elusive.

Nearly getting into a proper dissection of Mad Men with imp because by god I love that show and imp can intellectualise a sandcastle if you give him half a chance (pretty sure he described Breaking Bad as 'Miltonian' at one point so you know what I mean).

'Hello / Good luck' (possibly the best part of the weekend)

P.Sagat and Bandana Ryu throwing down.

Going to sleep to the sound of buttons.

Donut's trashtalking during the team tournament. Not the first time I've heard it but it's excellent. Arcade kingpin.

Trying to mindfuck Donut during the team tournament by selecting my Makoto against his Makoto and then losing.

Mindfucking Nate for five seconds by pretending to choose Rose against his Ken in the team tournament (before actually picking Abel and losing).

And loads more things.

I've forgotten to write loads of stuff I'm sure but it'll be boring for those who weren't there so it's no great loss.

Profound thanks to all attendees. Till the next one...

Oh Hegg, I'd love to come to your film night but it's on a Thursday and I pretty much can't do anything on Thursdays because of dad duties. Will they always be on a Thursday?

Balls! No, not always a Thursday. This just happened to be the date we went with for the pilot. Can you have a pilot for a film club? Bah.

If it goes well and we stay at this pub for a while then it will probably end up being a regular Tuesday, but there are a lot of ifs and maybes at the moment.

Hegg aren't you too old to be out and about in Dalston?

I might well come along to that, though. I do love me some donald sutherland.

Haha, yeah, I am. Not my ideal setting really, but I think it will be good to find my feet. It's a nice pub that has done this sort of thing before.

Be awesome if you came along dude. Might have some fun news to share soon about the version being screened, which will make it all especially sexy.

All these photos and write-ups are a bit bittersweet, they look huge fun but i've never been to one.

When it comes to Videogame Fighter the mistake I make is trying to learn the whole roster rather than maining SSFIV. :(

Also House Hunter is taking up most of my spare time right now.

Looking back on those Rival Scenes games, I'd say White Daigo has the best footsies of any player I've played against. I couldn't press any buttons whatsoever, and buttons are all Chun has. He also had that anti-JLM kryptonite of going straight into massive frame traps before establishing the throw game. I have a bad habit of assuming that people will go for throws first, but WD obviously knew that, in a one game set in particular, opening with a beefy counter hit combo can put you well on your way to winning from the very virst exchange. Ixion did that to me as well. Noted for future reference.

Oh, and I got beaten 15-0 by Shinji's Fei Long in casuals. It was even more demoralising than fighting his Guile used to be, though I did gradually get better as it went on and it was fun to play such a smart player over a long set. It wasn't quite as free as the scoreline suggests, though the scoreline does suggest my stick wasn't plugged in, so that's not so difficult. I was playing as Oni, and these games served as a harsh reminder that all of Oni's seemingly good buttons are actually quite shit. I knew this beforehand and have discussed it with Allystah, but no character is better at exposing those shortcomings than Fei. Counter hits for DAYS blad. Shinji's the first Fei I've fought who plays him correctly and does so almost flawlessly. Mago/Fuudo style Zen mode Fei Long where he does almost nothing and waits for the inevitable whiff punish, then dominates the corner completely to the point where you feel like giving up. None of the XBL Feis I've played are doing that, and watching it hundreds of times on stream doesn't adequately prepare you for fighting against it.

If I am to get better at this game (or even get back to where I was a few months ago), I need to do that more often. The online rematch button would be so good for that. I am more than happy to lose 15 times in a row to a better player because it's usually more useful than 50 wins against a player I can beat consistently, but getting chucked to the back of the queue or having to go back to the lobby after every game means it's much more appealing to get comfortable and be a lobby tyrant against players I can beat. Having limited internet time only compounds this, as if I'm in even a three man lobby I feel quitting when I get thrown to the back of the queue because watching the other game is costing me precious playing time.

I also need to play more GET SERIAS sets. More of those please.

Also I need a new stick pretty badly. It didn't cost me any of the games I lost yesterday, but I got to play on lots of other folks' controllers yesterday and the contrast was pretty ridiculous. My stick is hella wobbly yo.

Lastly, if the new mechanic is guard crush I will personally fly to Japan and crush Ono's guard myself.

More people need to get involved in the Seriaas matches! Every single set I've played has had some kind of positive effect on my play. Even leaving aside the feedback from opponents, just having the incentive to actively think about what you're doing (and why) makes it a fantastic learning tool.

I would like more Seriaas matches with my rudimentary Ryu, including but not limited to one against Camel's Sim to finish off our set of sets yesterday, and also to fight anyone who has recently beaten my Rufus so I can get that advice coming in! Plus of course I will delightedly fight anyone who fancies it with any character they want to fight.

But yes, other people need to get some sets scheduled too!

There've been a few qualifiers and I'm not sure if there's still one left, but I think they were all streamed on the capcomfighters twitch channel:

http://www.twitch.tv/capcomfighters/profile

This is the one I was talking about, but the Play Expo one is good too if you look at their past broadcasts (I haven't watched the one from this weekend yet):

Just had awesome set against Joffo, including Seriaas FT5. I'll post on that later.

Lost quite a few (13/6), but successfully used new tech I've been working on, including st.mp to stuff divekicks, and new Heggtech I've stolen.

I love this game.

GeeGees sir! I've posted a wee bunch o' words about it over in the Srrsrsrs Brzzznzz thread. :) Lovely casuals also!
