Not sure I've ever comboed off it. Jason probably has, though, because he's too godlike. As is that crew logo. Astounding work, Joffo.

I *think* my social club name is NateDoggIII but I sign up for so many of these things that I just don't know for sure.

Now I want my wife to go to bed so I can watch Canada Cup. I am already regretting downloading all these new television shows.

Just reached what I was aiming for this evening - 1500 Joe Points and 4000 Rose Points!

GGs to nuskool along the way as well, very nice to play you again. I also had a bunch of extremely close Rose mirrors against two different mans, and exchanged friendly messages.

Might catch up on the archives, or just watch the finals on Sunday.

I'm watching The Hunger Games right now. I only mention this because when I was reading the books, my mental picture was always of Ibuki as Katniss, Abel as Peeta, and Guy as Gale. I do this with pretty much every book, giving characters the faces of celebs or friends or fictional people, and this wasn't long after I got AE.

The film is really good so far, and the actors could sort of pass for the SF characters. Haymitch is an exception, I imagined him as Mick Foley.

Very much enjoying Justin Wong on commentary at the Canada Cup (first I've heard him on commentary that I can recall).

He's a great commentator, especially if he has someone next to him who can keep him on task and ask him leading questions to make sure he explains why the thing he's saying is a good idea is actually a good idea. He usually only does a few matches and then saunters off again, though, I guess because he's busy being the best at Marvel and trying to be the best at Street Fighter. Enjoy it while it lasts!

You need to set up evil ryu's dive kick to hit nice and meaty to link off it.

I use forward throw > whiff standing mp > jump towards and dive kick. It's easy to link a crouching jab off it and then you can link cr. mp or standing fierce xx tings. Nobody ever blocks this set up the first time as they'll instinctively go to block a crossup. What makes it filthy is that if you do the same set up with a delayed jumping mk instead of dive kick you get a really deep cross up instead. Very nasty 50/50, and then you can do empty jump low as a third option. I've had sets where that 3 tier mix up has been so effective that by the end I could do forward throw > whiff standing mp > walk up and throw again because they were concentrating so hard on blocking it.

I really must learn these set-ups for knockdown stuff. I usually get a knockdown, shuffle back and forth a little because that's what I saw a pro player do that one time, and then jump on them and hope it all works out.

So I went to Eurogamer Expo yesterday. I couldn't stick around for long because the train and tube journeys alone take up huge amounts of time, but I had time to nose around most of the stands. They had a few machines set up with various fighting games old and new from Street Fighter to Marvel, but I didn't really want to waste the day on fighting games and there were plenty of other people eager to get on the sticks. I did manage to play a bit of the Simpsons coin-op, which is trickier than I remember thanks to the animation and movement making it hard for me to judge my footsies against the CPU opponents :P

Of course, they had next-gen stuff to play and look at but the queues were huge. There was an area for Killer Instinct but I sort of skipped past it because it's hardly Street Fighter. ;) But generally I had a good time; I just wish I'd left the house earlier so that I could have spent a bit more time at the event. I'd like to go again though, so when it comes around in 2014 I'll nag fightmans to join me.

It is quite alarming how readily I pay the 8.95 for Canada Cup every year. I see it as a payment not for Lap Chi but for every tournament I watch throughout the year. Which it obviously isn't.

Got about halfway through top 8 last night (HD archives!) before turning in. Reminded me of Evo 2012 a bit in that

Just about every match has been one-sided and over very quickly. A sensation not helped by my skipping the bits in between matches in a (failed) bid to get through the whole thing before bedtime.

Quite the Streetfightering month for old Jellum:

September 27th: Team Jellistarr training session.
September 28th: Manchester Battle Arena: Warriors Return 2
October 5th/6th-ish: Possible Team Jellistarr training session.
October 12th: Play Expo, UK Capcom Cup qualifier
October 18th-20th: Heggwest
October 27th: Sunday Face Off: Rival Scenes. 5vs5 inter-regional team tournament.

It's a shame this didn't happen a few months ago when I was at the absolute peak of my SF4-ing abilities, though during that time I most likely wouldn't have been able to afford to attend all of those things due to unemployment. Somebody please sponsor me.

Excited about the tournament at Play Expo. The standard will be very high so my primary aim is to avoid going 0 and 2 and anything else would be a big bonus. Quite a few folks from out of town and even out of the country will be making the trip for this. Ixion90 will be there, so even if I do get eliminated early I'll at least be able to enjoy some of his spectacular Dan play in person.

More excited about Heggwest, obviously. Heggfests are the best fests.

Rival Scenes is the tournament I want to do well at the most, partly because one of the opposing teams has some thoroughly unpleasant people on it and I don't want to lose to them. It's the Sunday Face Off one year anniversary tournament too, so they've hired a fancy venue and it will be easily the biggest SFO event to date. The venue is a hotel function room and it looks like a tiny version of the Evo ballroom, which will only add to the hype.

Here are some MBA Warriors Return tings:

I thoroughly enjoyed the team SFO road trip to and from Manchester for this event. Lots of laughs were had and it's always nice to have people you can talk theory fighter with and share the salt after you lose. Good to see Sith there too of course. Not a bad run at all consdering your tough first round draw.

Some very good players in attendance at this event:

WyWyWyWy. Still one of the strongest Manchester players with his incredibly patient Juri
Fuzzy. Strong HDR and Strekken player who qualified for the SF 25th Anniversary tournament at the London qualifier. ProFluke. One of the UK's better Fuerte players.
White Daigo. Won Teesports last year and is, as his name would suggest, is a very good Ryu player.
Juggernaught. Excellent Gief player who I believe is from Manchester but I'm not certain.

Ghost, Benners, MetallicMike, Sprint, Strider and plenty of other solid AE players in there too meant that there were very few easy games in the bracket.

My own showing was very average, though the last minute cram session at Allistarr's house definitely helped and I was able to go 2 and 2 when I feared it'd be 0 and 2 after my last disastrous SFO tourney.

My games were:

JLM 0-2 WyWyWyWy

Bastard of a first round draw this. I think Infexious is probably the only player I've played who is more patient than WyWyWyWy. Rock solid Juri plasma zoning, fighting for every pixel of health and using every second of the time available. Textbook Juri corner control when he has an opportunity to do that as well. The first round of the set and the last round of the set were extremely close, but the ones in between I lost my composure and handed him easy wins. I didn't feel like a win was impossible despite the convincing scoreline though and I wouldn't mind another shot at him in future.

JLM 2-0 Adam W

AdamW played Honda first, which was pleasing to see as it's the match up I wanted the most after a disappointing loss to Ghost at SFO last time. I made use of the things I wasn't doing against Ghost and won very convincingly, though in truth AdamW's Honda isn't nearly as strong as Ghost's. He switched to Abel after that and I ended up guessing right at all the opportune moments and finished by punishing a blocked wheel kick with super. Felt good.

JLM 2-0 Adamphan

This was one of those matches that makes you very salty about having to face a top player in the first round when you see who you've joined in the early losers bracket rounds. He played Ryu and he picked Ultra 2, which is always a red flag to me that a Ryu player isn't likely to be very good. He was not very good. Very standard XBL-y Ryu where I had to little but anti-air, bait and punish. I still managed to drop combos and miss an ultra input though. Brilliant.

JLM 0-2 Jet

Ugh. Mediocre Balrog players are the bane of my life. It's a winning match up for Chun but I absolutely hate it and will find a way to lose it in almost every tournament. I'd seen Jet play earlier against a very dodgy T. Hawk player and myself and Sith were theory fighter-ing about their performances and whatnot. I noted that Jet was very reckless and also that he liked to do jab - > jab - > overhead - > link low short xx another overhead - > link low short xx headbutt - > ultra. We had a good laugh watching it as I respect that kind of filth, but I also said to Sith "if I play against him I bet I'll get hit with that." When I played against him I did, of course, get hit with that. I am free. To be honest I didn't turn up in the second game because I threw away the first one so badly. I had the life lead, he was on about 10%. I brainlessly threw a fireball inside ultra range but he didn't react. I thought "shit, that was stupid, better get to full screen now". Then I threw another fireball and he did dash ultra and killed me. Again, I am free. In my defense, I really didn't think he had dash ultra in him, but that's not really an excuse at all as I'd already had a near miss about two seconds before that and had absolutely no need to take that second risk. Ugh.

I play a decent Gief, I am very comfortable against Rog with Gief. Next time I pick Gief. I think it's because the first match was so close that I didn't switch after losing it, but I keep talking about my unwillingness to counter pick but never acting on it and it's a tournament skill I need to learn.

Sith, Benners and Ghost all did better than me thankfully, so I had plenty of fun matches to watch after my own crappy performance. White Daigo has a very crisp and clean Ryu, maxing out his punishes with cr. MP - > cr. fierce - > fierce DP and hitting solar plexus strike - > cr. fierce - > fierce DP with unerring consistency. I liked that he entered the tournament as simply "Rhys" so that when Sith sat down to play him he wasn't to know what he was up against until the first couple of max damage punishes.

Top 8 had some hype matches. Strider vs ProFluke in particular was hilarious because Strider's super animated playing style seemed to annoy ProFluke and he ended up taunting and jumping out of his seat and dancing and doing all sorts of silly stuff when his Fuerte did something good. Strider doesn't do it to annoy the opponent though, he just gets really involved in the game. Everything he says during the game is to himself and he'd be doing it if there was no one sat next to him. He's a really nice guy but if you didn't know that I could see how it might wind you up a bit.

There was one moment during the tournament when I was sat playing casuals and Strider bellowed "FUCK OFF!!!!" at a volume that silenced the whole room. He then went and slumped in a chair and when his opponent came over to shake his hand he was visibly trembling. I carried on playing casuals for a bit, then later when I looked at the bracket it showed that Strider had won the match in question. I went to confirm this with his opponent as I thought it must have been a mistake, but no, the "FUCK OFF!!!" was just Strider venting all the nervous tension from what was presumably a very very close win. He wasn't shouting at anyone, he just gets that involved. Personally I love it. That said, at one point in their match ProFluke hit Fierce - > run stop - > fierce xx run - > running sobat xx super and ended up jumping up out of his chair and convulsing like he'd been electrocuted in an attempt to counter Strider's extremely animated playstyle. It was quite good.

White Daigo unfortunately showed some nerves in the latter stages of top 8. Despite his obvious talent and growing rep he still has limited tournament experience and he definitely got flustered as the sets went on. He ended up going out against WyWyWyWy, who is not the man you want to fight if you're losing your composure.

Fuzzy's Ryu was a pleasure to watch, as was his Cammy. He had a lovely Cammy Routine where he'd do cross up short, jab jab strong, deliberately drop the spiral arrow then throw. He then did cross up short, jab jab strong, drop spiral arrow, pause, walk up crouching fierce for the counter hit and full combo. It was a lovely way to start a set and pretty much took the first round on its own.

Grand finals ended up with Juggernaught's Zangief vs Fuzzy's Ryu. As you may have noticed by now, I am rather partial to Zangief vs. Ryu, so I couldn't have asked for a better grand finals. I saw Fuzzy play this match up against Hadoshrooms at the 25th Anniversary tournament in London and he won using sweep, fireball and pretty much nothing else. He is all about the Super Turbo fundamentals. Juggernaught is much the same, playing Gief with immaculate spacing, with a nice bonus being that he is the master of the anti-air SPD. Any time anyone empty jumps anywhere near him they get scooped at max range and always look to be in disbelief that it's happened again. He also does smart match up specific things like not punishing sweep with EX green hand because it's better to hold onto it and not lose your way in. It seems obvious, but giving up free damage for strategic reasons takes a huge amount of discipline and for me is the mark of a superior player. Great set, down to the wire and Juggernaught was able to take it. I'm all for Gief/Ryu grand finals and I'm all for Gief winning tournaments, so this result was all good for me. He had to beat Strider's Akuma on the way there too, which is never an easy task for Gief.

A fun day out despite my fairly poor showing, and it was cool to see that a number of the old faces from the Manchester Gamerbase ranbats are the ones running these events and continuing to grow their scene. Will definitely be back for their next event and I'm already excited for the Play Expo event in two weeks.

I was worried there might not be a full write-up given your computer woes. Good work.

I was reading about the play expo capcom cup qualifier earlier and feeling a bit grumpy that the venue fee is £14, presumably because you're paying for access to a bunch of things wholly unrelated to Street Fighter.

And yes, we're definitely on for a practice session this weekend, and we can also entertain Sith and any other thread regulars who might be nearby. Saturday might be better than Friday if you are free, but both are available.
