Ultra Street Fighter IV

You don't need fancy combos to win, but they make you feel much better when you land them. Or even better when you burn all your meter on needlessly flashy nonsense and go on to lose the round as a direct result. I took about a year to ever bother with FADCs, and even now I only ever really use them after uppercuts, since I'm buggered if I can hit confirm into FADC combos most of the time.

Incidentally, lads, I'm probably starting a new job in foul old central london soon, which starts and finishes earler than my current job, and has less of a commute, meaning I might be about a bit more for early evening fighter, which seems to be somewhat in vogue these days.

I will write things about my SFO failings soon, but I echo Allystah's sentiment that it was still lots of fun, particularly all the pair mode Strekken.

In sadder news, I appear to have misplaced my HDMI cable. Do I need to spend any more than £5 for a decent one lads? I have only ever used the ones that came bundled with my various consoles and have never had to buy one on its own.

Yeah, I felt like I'd read plenty of advice ot that effect. I shall purchase a sensible priced one then. Thanking you.

Also, here are my customary videos in honour of my new avatar, Mr. Franco Bash:

I think "out of bounds" is quite an amusing understating of smashing someone through some sturdy looking glass and hurling them down an elevator shaft.

However, more important than his absurd combos and bluckstun infinite pressure sttrings is the dance of the floppy arms:

Yes.

Bugger.

The PS3 is getting repaired this weekend and I am making a serious attempt at getting good at this again. Faffing about on the Steam version again and was hoping to join you guys in a few kick abouts once I have got a bot more confident about it >_<

Well it's not like I haven't sent you dozens of messages on twitter in my attempts to sweet-talk you into rejoining Live; it's because that's where most of the sexyfuntimes are. :)

I'd buy the Steam version myself but I'm trying to avoid too many frivolous gaming purchases this year. Says the guy who bought Divekick.

It crosses up depending on the range but you can block high or low. If he's behind you afterwards then it crossed you up. Different strengths go different distances so they can mix you up a bit even if you think you know whether it's going to cross up, but it's not invincible so you can often hit him out of it before it starts hitting, especially if you anticipate it. Or you can jump away and punish, or if you're feeling extra saucy you can throw it on startup.

Oh yeah, the EX version usually crosses up, and can combo into either of his ultras or a bunch of other moves for a touch of extra damage. It was the scourge of week one, but with a bit of practice you can definitely get used to defending against it - you just need the experience so you don't freeze up when you see it happening. Might be worth ten minutes in training mode with the dummy set to do different strengths of it, if you want to be prepared for next time!

It's also punishable if you do block it successfully, though I'd recommend something fast and invincible like a dragon punch as a lot of Oni players like to mash DP or ultra after the slash gets blocked.

The EX one will invariably cross you up unless they are literally doing it from full screen. If you don't want to try and hit/grab him out of it then blocking the opposite direction when you see the yellow flash isn't a terrible idea.

That said, the roundhouse version can cross you up as well and isn't as telegraphed as the EX one, so that one you have to get used to eyeballing. Don't be discouraged if you continue to get hit by it for some time as it proved to be damn near unblockable for everyone for the first couple of months after Oni was released. I've only recently got the hang of it, and that's only because I play a fair bit of Oni, Allystah plays Oni, I attend a regular tournament that is frequently won by possibly the best Oni player in the world and one of the other regulars mains Oni as well. I have frankly excessive match up experience. I'm also a master of Dudley vs Makoto and Dudley mirrors, which are both entirely useless in tournament.

I just have to say I love the floppy arms, more floppy arms in fighting games I say.

By sexyfuntimes, don't you mean sadmanchilds?

Hahaha yeah but my 360 is busted beyond repair, the PS3 is only gonna cost us about £30!

Team Jellistarr; sorry you got knocked out dudes. Glad it was fun though.

Didn't get to watch stream etc of tourney. Was planning on it but real life stuff happened and my brother ended up in hospital.

What's going on this year?

:(

Ah well, he's ok except for a broken sternum.

Am off to the south of France on Thurs for 4 days for fully laid on wedding bash. Bit of a mixed week really.

Need to play some SF tomo.

Life keeps getting in the way of my childrens game!

I guess that omh must be fairly close to europe's best oni, but aren't there any decent ones in the US or japan? I know that combofiend came over and won a london tourney last christmas with oni, against the likes of f word (blad), ryan hart and andreas etc, though he can't compete now because he's a capcom employee (which is a bit of a stupid rule).

I feel like with Combofiend it was more him being generally excellent than him having the best Oni as such. I know it might seem a bit silly to separate a great user of a character from a great player who happens to use a character but I do think it's a valid distinction. What I mean is that he wasn't using max damage stuff or using match up specific tech or truly getting optimal use out of the character. He was just being godlike because he's Combofiend. I'd still put him up there as one of the better American Oni users of course (Chris Hu's is legit as well), but in terms of absolute mastery of the character I'd put OMH over both of them. Similar to VRyu with Makoto, I'm taking into account exploration of and innovation with the character and wringing every ounce of potential out of them as well as wins and losses.

In Japan there are plenty of good Oni users, though much like in Europe and the U.S. he has had limited tournament success and you then have to look at the online monsters. Shinochan and the like. Again, I'd put OMH amongst the best of them.

In Europe I don't think there's a lot of competition, though Demulant's Oni is tremendous. Combofiend has probably had the best offline tournament success with the character, so I can see the criteria for him being the best, but I think it's unfair to discredit online play entirely. Offline is preferable, but winning long sets against quality players still counts online and OMH has consistently done that. I don't think it's unreasonable to value an online FT5 or FT10 as equally or more decisive than an offline two out of three. Similarly, I'd rate ACE EIRIN/Blue Emblem as the number 2 Guile in the world even though he's primarily an online warrior.

Only through the power of the internet is such a thing fathomable. I think he sits alongside the best with the character, but in fairness it's difficult to judge some of the more beastly Japanese online Oni players as you only get to see them in individual ranked match videos. Some of them are clearly exceptionally good though.

I have ordered a sensibly priced HDMI cable. I will be fighting later, housemates permitting.

I don't think he's quite in the same league as Dieminion or ACE EIRIN but he's certainly one of the best Guile players in Europe. He is a pretty ridiculous man, and that can definitely cloud people's opinion of him to the point where I feel he's underrated. He does a lot of stuff that seems (and often is) a bit rrraggo, but I was saying to Allystah just this weekend that there is more thought behind what he does than is initally apparent. He does adapt and respond to what the opponent does, he's just very stubborn and plays by instinct a lot of the time. He's good at reading the opponent's mood like Valle and finding out when they're getting frustrated. The one time in five where you stop to bait the flash kick will often be the turn he decides not to do one, and that's not always a coincidence. His playstyle isn't nearly as clean and solid as Dieminion's nor as technically asotunding and surgically precise as EIRIN's, but his unpredictability and self belief are his biggest assets as often as they are points of criticism.

Imp - you asked about science fiction art, if I recall? I just launched our first line of vintage prints: http://thespacemerchants.co.uk/category/30467-artwork.aspx

I'd be curious to know what you think, so feel free to comment. It's hopefully the beginning of a much larger collection, that will incorporate original stuff in the not-so-distant future as well.

Oh yeah, street fighter...I'm going to get my stick from the top of the wardrobe and start practicing again.
