Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Recommended Posts

Yeah, GGs to Curtis, Dogfingers, allistar and IG. I did so-so in the random select lottery but I got a few wins from that streak with T. Hawk since he's just amazing fun. :D IG's Guile mauled me as usual though. Street Fighter!

Ah man, I watched the first few mins thinking 'this is awesome' then had to stop - i'ts downloading now for watching during commutes over the next week. STREET FIGHTER.

Good luck JLM and alistarr! Will there be footage of any kind to digest? Shaky cam mobile video will do! hehe :D

I need a recommendation of a new character to learn. A second to Chunners. Someone that not many people play or see online. No not Dan!

There's the stream on! Is there still a Jason? I'm excited.

EDIT: Oh no, I think he's out, to Ghost. The bracket says 2 - 0; murder by numbers. From the look of Benners' Sagat just now it looks like it would have been a difficult proposal but you beat Will Ho so it wasn't a total demolition, man. At least it teaming up in SFxT means it's not the vanishing it could have been and y'all ain't likely to miss; congeniality is in abundance for team J*.

Also, they should turn the game volume up; the commentators are extremely loud and incredibly close.

Uh... The Heat 2.

Unlucky guys :(

Just had a mini sesh; it's still so satisfying to come up against a SHIT player who's like got 6000BP and own them so hard they rage quit (as I just did VS a crap Zangief AND a crap Akuma). I can taste their salty tears from here.

It was still definitely worth going - I was mad as anything after each defeat but a large part of why I lost was that I just wasn't well-practised at tournament play. My first game was a complete mess and I just felt like I had no idea what game I was playing. Really weird, especially considering I'd fought well against the same guy in tournament the first time I went up there a couple of months ago. Nerves, I guess. Then my second game I adapted once to something that my opponent was doing and then spectacularly failed to change things again once he picked up on what I was doing. He said some nice things to me afterwards about how it wasn't a bad attempt considering it was my first tournament... which of course it wasn't.

Then we played a bunch of SFxT 2v2 and convinced the organiser to let us enter the SFxT tournament as a team, and that was fun even if we did lose a match we probably didn't need to lose. My big lesson from the day was firstly that I take too long to get a read on my opponent - I'm too passive in the first couple of games, and of course in a tournament you only get the first couple of games and then you're done. Before the tournament started I played three different players in longer casual sets and pretty much broke even in all of them, including some really fun games against Dom who knocked me into losers me last time I went. But this time I just couldn't get it done in the tournament setting. I think I might need to get on those ranked matches to try and up my reading speed.

So yes, good casuals in two games, dreadful tournament showing in two games, and lots of stuff to work on if I'm going to show my face up there again in the future. I'm sure JLM will be along at some point to tell everyone how he got on, but I had a great time despite it being about as bad a tournament showing as it's possible to have!

Unlucky J*, but sounds like it was still good fun. I'll have to watch the stream when you come storming back and take the next one by storm.

Was round Plopboy's gaff this weekend as I said, we played all the fighting games. AE, Marvel, 3rd Strike (on cabinet!!!) and even 4-player Strekken. And that was in between all the Nintendo action and board gaming. Good times.

Just watched that SF documentary too. Pretty good stuff, and that ending is absolutely p... riceless.

Hard lines team J* hope it wasn't too salty an experience.

Marvel was most fun with Joeplus, as button where pressed and the screen just seemed to explode in a myriad of colours and excitement without either of us having a clue. Apart from Captain America being awesome.

Strekken was fun but I'd completely forgotten how to play and my bear was not impressed, though the biggest fight game of the weekend had to be Monkey Fight and it's awesome vortexes :)

I've only ever played SSFIV online, really. I'm awful, and the constant beat downs were pretty soul destroying, but I've recently found out a friend also plays and we've been getting together to play some SF on weekends, and it's amazing what a difference it makes. It helps that he's roughly of the same skill level as me. It felt great when, after a few round, he'd effectively figured me out and from then I really had to force myself to play in new ways.

It's really brought the game back to life for me. The only problem is we only really have one Main each, so while he's teaching me a lot about Akuma, the rest of the roster (especially the ones you don't really encounter online these days) are still often quite new to me.

I tried my hand at online today and I feel I've definitely improved.

It's also nice to have someone with whom to talk about the latest tournaments and how we still can't FADC.

This is such a nice post. I play on PC if that's any good for you and would be up for a 1v1 any time I'm available! FWIW I still can't FADC either. I have no intention of learning to. :D

I can't FADC either and I've got over 3,000PP! The key is finding a character that suits your play style and even personality.

Then a bit of reading online about the character's match-ups and you're halfway there. Next is learning the core fundamentals such as anti-airs, throws and one good punish.

Learning the characters pokes and footsies comes next to help you with the spacing aspect of the game. Oh and blocking, blocking is good.

See how I never mentioned needing fancy combos to win?

I've pretty much ditched ranked play entirely now in favour of lobby action since I also had my soul destroyed a number of times, and it's helped me to love the game again :P

The spreadsheet joe mentions is available here so get adding folk :)
