Ultra Street Fighter IV

I haven't played either of them :(

I did however play a whole bunch of Divekick with Jonster on Steam the other day and some truly hype moments were shared. It's amazing how much you miss Street Fighter's replay channel when it's not there...

Hype is definitely the word. It's great how such a simple game can be so competitive.

I don't know yet! Vega always used to be my go to for SF2 and he seems largely unchanged in SF4, but lacking in reliable anti-air. Maybe Ken but shotos are a bit boring especially fighting another shoto in endless fireball standoffs. Might pick up Ibuki or Cammy or someone like that. I'll experiment a bit more and see who I like then take em online for a kicking and work out which parts I'm most lacking (probably just punishing whiffs properly to start with). That's assuming there are still enough other beginners out there queuing for matches for me to take baby steps :)

edit: ok say if I'm playing some Ken and I dizzy someone, is jHK, cMK, QCB HK good enough to beat on them or should I (as a beginner) still be looking for more damage to press the advantage? Combos rapidly run into diminishing damage right?

There's always less experienced players kicking around but losing matches against better players helps you to see what works and what doesn't; you'll learn more from a loss than a win, typically.

If you're Ken and you have a clear opportunity for damage like that and you don't have the meter for Ultra or Super (I generally wouldn't use Ken's Super unless it's to take the round, though, so you have the extra meter to play with) then jumping in with a hard punch or kick then using his close standing hard kick and cancelling that into your QCB+HK would do more damage than the cr.mk option there. It's quite good as it keeps you close for a bit more pressure, too. You can change the tatsu for a dragon punch if your opponent is crouching, since the tatsu won't hit then.

Combo damage does scale with every extra hit. Hitting with a focus attack scales it even further. If you've done a huge combo and it's ended in stun it can often be worthwhile to try "reset" your opponent with a combo which will knock them out of stun, giving them the opportunity to block, then attack them in an ambiguous manner to make it tricky to defend. One common example of that is with Sakura: Her EX Tatsu (QCB+KK) move launches the opponent and she then has followups for decent damage while they're airborne. Rather than go for, say, her Ultra to follow up you could standing jab the airborne opponent, which causes them to land on their feet rather than knocking them down, then at the last moment dash underneath them to the other side and catch them with another combo into EX Tatsu.

One of the most important things to learn early on is to block. You'll find that a lot of players will make enough mistakes to reward your patience. Then just find a reliable punish, like the Ken one above, for your character. With Ken his fast hp shoryuken or ex shoryuken will allow you to punish for decent damage with minimal difficulty and while you will get some decent milage out of just mashing that and hoping the opponent drops their combo, especially online, you're very much in danger if they predict it and block accordingly. You'll develop much faster if you focus on seeing where and when it works and why. One example would be against Zangief: he's always desperate to get in close so you'll see lesser players (like me!) spamming EX green hand since it'll quickly move through your projectiles. If you succesfully block the move however, Gief is vulnerable while he recovers. You can definitely mash your dragon punch then. There are more damaging options, but you can worry about the specifics of how long each moves to recover (and the best damage/most unnecessary flair you can bust out in that small window) later once you're more comfortable with whichever character you land on.

I've rambled on a wee bit there and I'm just about to eat so I'm not sure I've even answered any questions properly. I just like typing about Street Fighter. Just keep playing and picking a specific aspect of your game to practice then ask all the questions in here again. We all like typing about Street Fighter.

Also, Donut! I did see that! Someone posted it over in Retro. I really oughta own a virtual boy, even though they're definitely very awful, surely.

I had thought about some serious advice but that is best left to others, so here is my completely unscientific guide to all the characters

Abel
A nice French man who likes little dogs. No so good with the old memory but has some nice moves and his Ultra 2 is rather good as a grab. Not so good with the anti air but has rather a snazzy leotard and a lot of stamina.

Adon
Annoying, if you don't know the match up, always is in the air with overhead moves everywhere. Can't take much of a beating if the opponent gets in.

Akuma
Grumpy evil Shoto, lots of good moves but can't take beating.

Balrog (Boxer)
Good charge character who likes his fight money and has some nice alt costumes. Also can get round projectiles fairly well.

Blanka
Jungle boy, with a range of annoying moves but has a lovely explorers outfit. But he also has possible the most spangly Brazilain carnival inspired alt costume.

Cammy
Top tier cat lady with pig tails. I always find one of her ultras tricky to punish as she recovers quite quick. Friends with Chun Li.

Chun-Li
Thunder thighs herself, friends with Cammy. Not as strong as her SFIII incarnation but still good. Comboing into her U2 is fairly easy (i.e. I can do it) but has less stamina than other peeps. Good at poking and can control space well if used properly. Anti airing is a little tricky with her though.

Cody
Has a knife, a lying down taunt and a bad attitude. Not played him much but people seem to like him. Has a nice Ultra involving a pipe.

C. Viper
Super secret agent type lady, with fiery shoes and sun glasses. One of the new ones and can apply good pressure. Not seen as traditional SF by some though.

Dan
Is awesome and top tier (well bottom tier but that is only silly lists that don't take awesomeness into account). Has more taunts that you can wiggle a stick at. Can stuff some Ultras with his crouching taunt, which is awesome. He wears pink but has a snazzy grass skirt outfit. Is friends with Sakura and Blanka, well more their master really. His father was killed by Sagat. Is awesome.

Dee Jay
Likes playing the maracas and stuff. Has an annoying slide, meh

Dhalsim
Teleports everywhere, stretchy limbs and fiery breath. From India and likes elephants

Dudley
A very dapper young man who fights in a very splendid style but always maintain his dignity. Likes tea and growing roses and good at applying pressure. Also importantly has a Freddy Mercury style alt costume and rose taunt. Oh and everyone else is gutter trash.

E. Honda
Bum splash, busy hands sumo chubbster. Lots of health and has been know to eat at El Fuerte's restaurant. Also some nice alt costumes.

El Fuerte
A super dynamic cook, who is the most unSF of all the characters. People who get caught up in his delicious cooking smells and end up playing him love him, everyone else hates him. Not as many people play him and once he gets hit he gets hit hard, but worth checking out the match up as you may go wft if you haven't played against him before. Second only to Dan in awesomeness and has a nice range of frying pans and lovely cooking.

Evil Ryu
Evil alt of the dry cracker man. Marginally more interesting as he flames red and can do lots of damage but the big bully can't take it

Fei Long
Not at all like Bruce Lee and has a lovely anti air chicken. Does Rekas but generally played in quite a patient style.

Gen
Chinese martial arts expert with two distinct styles which can be swapped on the fly. Xain is awesome with him but he is very technical. He does have busy hands and some nice moves.

Gouken
Grumpy shoto master.

Guile
A family man who is down back a lot. Low Sonic Boom into shades is a must with this guy. Friends with Ryu. Lost his brother a while back which is why he is a bit grumpy.

Guy
Serious ninja dood, with some nice combos but can get slapped about. Slow walk speed but can mix it up with some fast moves.

Hakan
Big oily wrestler who is devoted to his daughters. Has a nice focus move, blue hair and likes Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi.

Ibuki
Fast little minx with some great moves, but low stamina. Likes racoons and going to school.

Juri
Evil lady with a dive kick and wheel of doom. First Korean fighter I believe and some nice costumes and a funky taunt.

Ken
Shoto who should only be played in the pink cowboy outfit and then mash dp.

Makoto
Slow walking girl who wants to save her Dojo. Can give you a right slap in capable hands though. Another one from the awesome SFIII.

M. Bison (Dictator)
Doesn't really have any friends and so just tries to rule the world though fighting tournaments or gets defeated because of not winning a fight. If he had some friends they might advise him against this course of action.

Oni
Another nasty evil shoto with strong attacks

Rose
Gypsy lady who has the good half of Bison's soul, can reflect projectiles back, which leads onto the awesome Rose Bowl competitions, oh and a few people seem to like her on here.

Rufus
A rather tubby American who seems to be very worried that he might loose his girl friend to Ken, even though Ken is married with a little boy. Like Ken he has his own mashing move and has a rather nice biker outfit.

Ryu
Dryer than the Sahara and doesn't really go out much. Likes sweeping though and has a rather nice collection of brooms.

Sagat
Dan's dad took his eye out which made him a bit peeved. Likes to throw fireballs high and low and knee people if they get too close. There is a good T-shirt with Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes as Sagat.

Sakura
One of Dan's students and likes to combo. Goes to school when not fighting and for some un godly reason fancies Ryu. Girls today, eh.

Seth
Dr Manhattan wannabe who stole lots of other fighting styles, Strong character but has low healt and stun, but can be very annoying, good ultra though.

T. Hawk
Big Mexican very into hawk training. Has lots of powerful moves and a rather dated line in denim clothes.

Vega (Claw)
Ponces about the stage and defends from on high, annoying but I do like the fact you can throw away his claw and mask if you so wish.

Yang
Very good line in hair products and is Yun brother. Unfortuneatly he got hit with the nerf stick and so takes a bit more work to do any damage, though has a nice line in up kicks. He also like dive kicking.

Yun
Yang's bro, who also likes the dive kick and and stuff.

Zangief
Big burley Russian wrestler who like nothing better than a big bear hug. He is a friendly sort and not a bad man unlike a recent film tried to portray him. Seems to have green hands though which must be a worry. Lots of health and a nice running grab move and a jumping U2.

Edited to make more sense, if that is possible.

There's also a preview of Ultra SFIV with an interview with Ayano. One little nugget that didn't make the page is that they're toning down the colour scheme of Pit Stop 109 because the current version doesn't fit with SFIV's art style. No word on doing the same for the music but I rather hope not.

Of all the stages they could've taken from Strekken. Why.

I actually love Pitstop 109. It's superb. It would totally be Captain Falcon's stage.

I really wish the roof of Mishima Estate made it in. Wouldn't have been too hard to repurpose it as a Ryu stage. It's beautiful. I have high hopes that they'll finally recognise the potential of Tartan Apron Man (TAM) and make him the fifth character. My realistic guess is still Asura, even though they outright said it wasn't him. I can't remember who's eliminated and who isn't. Go Hibiki, back from the dead?

My edge issue hasn't arrived yet. It usually gets here on the friday. I bet I get a boring Halo cover instead of the lovely Mario or Ocarina of Time ones. Some of the other things the Mario cover person did is lovely:
