Ultra Street Fighter IV

We splurged hard and caned all 4 and a half seasons over the course of a couple of months so I find difficult to pick out what happened in each season without potentially spoilerising everything.

I do think it's good TV and it ranks high for the simple fact that it had one particular scene that I had never ever um... seen before but I don't know if it's the high watermark of TV that it's held up as. That said, the most recent two episodes have been good and I am looking forward to the next one already.

For what it's worth I'm into the new season of The Newsroom more than I thought I'd be. Didn't see that coming.

I think fly is in series 3. Fly is a brilliant episode.

They start doing some really crazy stuff with cameras, really cool shots. There was an amazing one in the episode last night with a camera about a roundabout in a park, spinning at the same rate. It was pretty ace.

That was cool. I find it takes me out of it a lot of the time though. I stop watching the program and think "that was a technical marvel" or, "oh BB, you're so obsessed with your crazy shots." I'm pretty sure the current cinematographer came in for the second season though, not the third, though I agree the third is where it really took a step up.

General BB spoilers, and a Drive soundtrack joke.

The thing I find weirdest about BB is that basically the core characters are fairly subtly written, with enough depth to allow for a degree of psychoanalysis (read: plausible fan speculation), and are brought to life by some seriously fantastic actors, but the peripheral characters (mainly the bad guys) are all straight out of a Vertigo comic book. Tuco, The Twins, Hector Salamanca, even Fring to an extent, never really felt like actual human beans since they all had to adhere to a gimmicky personality trait.

I don't know about it being the best TV show ever, but it is very exciting, and that's enough for me!

Ig, I know you don't mind feedback so today it's that you are still too fond of walking backwards at the start of the round. Stand your ground, soldier!

Also feedback for both of you is to get your microphone situations sorted so I can call you names when you hit me.

GG's to Alistarr and Nate yesterday yesterday. Thanks for the feedback. Always appreciated. It's how I learn stuff.

Mr Starr: I will try and take your advice on board and not back off at the start of the round. You're right i give up space too easily at the start. My thinking was to try and get into recommended position of 3/4 screen away for Rufus, and i'm not actually that hot on the Ken matchup so I was backing off to try and see what he was doing, but you're right and I was getting cornered too easily.

Goddamn Ken's ambiguous crossup as well! So annoying to block a crossup and it hits in front! Gotta practice against those setups. At least I got some replays to study.

Also thanks for the advice on the headset. Do wireless headsets not need a receiver of some sort plugged into the headphone socket then? I've seen some that have them.

What time will you be around for some wild sweaty Rufus on Guile action then? Also been training a little stuff for the next time I come across your Oni as well.

Heh.

Puns very much intended.

That sounds about right. On the one hand I've enjoyed the footage of tournament matches and casual games, but on the other hand it's not as newbie-friendly as it could have been - the comments and feedback I've seen leading up to release have a lot of people thinking that it's too cliquey for its own good and far removed from the purity of the earlier builds. I think that it could still hold merit as a "simple" game if people choose to ignore a few of the fiddlier characters, but really I'm just hoping I can make my nephew press buttons and see stuff happen :) Then I'll find something completely different to obsess over.

Few new bits of info on Killer Instinct:

- only six characters at launch.

- Jago free, others cost £3.99 apiece or you can buy in bulk. Pay £39.99 - or 'the cost of a full game', as I like to call it - and you get all six characters plus another two before they go on general sale as well as costumes and "character accessories".

- our man on the ground tells me you can now combo off of combo breakers, which sounds deliciously broken.

"Thirty-eight characters? No! Two thirteen characters!"

That's more matchups than Killer Instinct!

Re. Killer Instinct, they really should've found a way to let you pick your first character.

I wonder how much of this was the publisher, really. Qazi, you backed it on Kickstarter - were they originally talking about expanding the roster or did that come later?

It really is packed full of in-jokes, though. The obvious Dr Doom girl is a podiatrist studying a disease called Foot Dive. One of Stream's special moves is called Spooby Pls. One of Marn's win quotes is "I don't hug white girls". You can play as Markman.

From what I recall, the footage of the earlier builds (back when it was just a UFGT thing rather than a commercial product) already had a few extra characters before the Kickstarter was set up - Kung Pao and Mr.N were there, and Redacted was there as Wolverine... I seem to recall a few messages on Kickstarter teasing more character reveals; Sensei and Shoals were revealed in some updates, but all of that's available to anyone who visits the Kickstarter page. I knew that some more characters would be added on behalf of the top backers (The Baz and Kenny (and Jefailey I guess)) but generally I knew as much as anyone else who watched the eSports hours and read the tweets.

From what I've seen of the game I think that it could probably shed a bunch of characters and still be an enjoyable thing, but there's nothing stopping friends playing under their own rules and character-locks...

That's actually not a bad comparison, Donut. If you like fighting games, it's great, but it's become too much of a fighting game, if you see what I mean.

Yeah, I reckon DK will prove to be even more niche than 3S, since I can't see it getting much of a following outside of the West. I probably won't be getting it any time soon because I've fallen foul of the PS3 HDMI handshake problem. It seems like my 360's ethernet port decided to die today, too!

It seems like KI has been sent to die, really. £40 for a digital download? Even Capcom didn't have the balls to charge £40 for Super and AE on a physical disc, and that's a far more established franchise.
