Ultra Street Fighter IV

Oh, and practise this:

cr. jab - > cr. jab - > standing jab - > standing lk xx EX green hand.

Add/remove jabs as necessary depending on distance/how much time you want to hit confirm.

It's a really easy b'n'b combo

How easy is the link between LK and EX Green Hand in this? Despite playing Street Fighter IV since release (even since the Japanese location test no less) I've never been able to get the hang of reliably linking anything, and when I hear people talking about "easy" links, it usually ends up being that their definition of "easy" is "not quite impossible".

Standing LK xx EX green hand is a cancel rather than a link. It's not the easiest cancel to do at the end of a combo because light attacks don't give you that much time to buffer in the special move input. I do think the combo as a whole is one of the easier b'n'b hit confirmy type combos in the game though. Gief's standing LK gives you more time to cancel than the average light attack and the links in the combo have a nice intuitive rhythm to them. The fact that it starts with plenty of jabs gives you time to set yourself and make sure you get the ending right.

I'd say practise cancelling standing LK into EX green hand on its own a bunch of times, then practise tapping out the light attacks with the right timing.

I tend to do the last bit by inputting standing jab - > towards + light kick - > down - > down towards - > two kicks.

So the beginning of the green hand input is done at the same time as the light kick and you don't have to quickly input the whole motion.

I'd recommend persevering with it if you want to use Gief as I think it's essential to his game.

Been practising this, and yeah, by 'easy', i think 'not quite impossible' is meant:) Its linking the last LP and the LK that gets me. But I'll get there. Someday...

With the LK into greenhand, I find it easiest to do DPM LK, then immediately hit PP afterwards.

Ha, sorry if I've pitched the difficulty incorrectly there. It's at the easier end of the combos I can do consistently, and the hardest combos I can do consistently are still not at the "not quite impossible" end in the scheme of things. It's not as easy as Jump roundhouse - > cr. mk xx fireball but it is nowhere near fierce-feint-fierce, run stop fierce, flash kick fadc ultra etc.

It really is easier than a good number of characters' b'n'b combos (Sakura, Guile, Rufus, Dee Jay, Dudley, Honda and Vega all spring to mind, probably quite a few more) but I'd say the biggest consolation if you're struggling is that you can have it as your only Gief combo and still do absolutely fine.

Aside from that and making sure you can SPD and ultra reliably you don't need to practise much with Gief in terms of execution, and you can constantly be improving as Gief just through experience and learning what players' bad habits are when fighting against him. Try not to fall into an autopilot routine and do what worked last time but instead be patient and figure out what your opponent is about. Incorporating all the other Gief stuff I mentioned earlier is more important than this combo, but if you want to learn a Gief combo then that is the only one you need.

Well that is just glorious. Allystah's new avatar??

It's amazing, but it needs to be more purple!

(Sorry Joffocakes for messing with your art with my dreadful image editing. It's genuinely amazing.).

Donut, I have a ranked match win against that Bipson player! He goes by BBWF Ty on the Xboxes. He caught me saving the replay and sent a message saying "lol replay". Oh the shame. His set with Ryan Hart really was excellent wasn't it? I kept shouting at Tyrant for going in and throwing away big advantages but he also had some very clutch moments. Nice hype crowd too; I must get down to an E-dojo event one day. Leeds was quite well represented, though 2nd place in Persona was the only notable result from the SFO folks.

SVB's fall from grace is sad because it was quite an exciting event with international players and the feel of a real major when I went, but I can't say it isn't deserved given the attitudes of some of the people who organise it. Ryan Hart and Problem X choosing to go to Birmingham instead was quite damning.

In more pleasing UK tournament news, it's cool that Namco have come through with some prizes for the next Manchester Battle Arena Tekken tournament:

1ST Place

* Hori Fight Stick

* Limited edition Alisa T-Shirt

* Pacman Pen

* Deck of Tekken Card Tournament

* 2 choices of selected console games

* Tales of Graces Notepad

* 2 x project x zone postcards

* 60% PRIZE POT

They have prizes for second, third and some bonuses for everyone who makes top 8 as well. Nice to see them showing some support as the Manchester players have a lot of love for Tekken.

Ha, lovely. I'm so proud! I do like purple also.

I played a little bit of Street Fighter in ranked and endless yesterday for an hour after about a week of not doing that at all. It's utterly hilarious how quickly the rust forms on your basic skills.

I'm no expert on the tourney scene but it feels harsh to judge SVB on this year's showing. From the HOG on Facebook:

SVB this weekend was quite different. Many people seemed to warm to the vibe of just playing casuals over Tournaments, and who were we to say no? For the short notice that (regretable, yes) was provided, it didn't stop 200 plus people from making their way down to the HOG and really enjoying some great gaming, both competitvely and casually, and from all points in gaming's timeline.

SVB was held this year to keep tradition going, as the longest running yearly fighting games event in the UK. Now that this event is behind us, planning for SVB 2014 has already begun. This is going to be the year that silences the haters and restores prestige to the UKFGC, right here in good ol' London. It will be the biggest and best event that the UK has seen to date, and will have numerous celebrity players in attendance as well as support from numerous companies who, like all of us, want the FGC to be a welcoming place for players both past, present, and future.

...

Neo Empires forum has been purged of trouble makers, and is also set to return. In short, the proof is speaking for itself. 200 plus people turning up at a moments notice shows that many of us are desperate for good game and offline laughs. If you haven't made it down yet, I hope we see you soon and look forward to making a believer out you and anyone else who wants to be part of this. Everything has its ups and down, trick is to learn from past mistakes, and we've all seen how low the fgc can sink. The next year will be a rollercoaster, so sit back, stay tuned, and most importantly, enjoy.

It seems pretty clear this was a transitional thing, with HOG hosting even though it's not really big enough. Obviously anything could happen but at this point I'd be optimistic for next year.

Their new community manager comes from the scene, I think, and their PR guys are pretty switched on. Nice to see. That SVB post sounds like bluster though, I must say. Also, 'celebrity players'. Ewww.

Anyway I was so close to playing Street Fighter on Xbox last night. Got home and unpacked the console and realised that while I had the power brick I didn't have the actual lead with the plug on it. Three big ol' cheers for me.

Instead I continued my ranked match adventures on PC. I'm coming up against better players now, and really surprised how well I'm holding my own. I finished the night up over 1800 PP and I don't think I ever hit those dizzy heights on Xbox. I think some time away from playing - time in which I've watched an awful lot and, crucially, seen a lot more Kens in tournaments thanks to DRS Chris, Dark Jiewa and Momochi - have really helped. I'm much calmer now. I am actually making some good reads. I have a couple more mixups. I finally realised that cr.LP cr.LP HP SRK isn't a cancel, but a link, and now hit that more often than not. You can link Super off a jab, too, which is lovely.

So, yeah, my execution is still horrible and I make some awful mistakes (especially against bad players), there are so many bad Akumas, and I finally got on the wrong end of a Cammy vortex and that shit is just beyond the pale, but my return is going well so far. I will try and remember to take home the other half of the power lead tonight and will pop on XBL after I try, and inevitably fail, to break 2,000PP.

Street Fighter!

Ended up watching electronicdojo yesterday, thanks Jellum. Ryan vs that Bipson player was a bit too much! No wonder SVB seemed so.... quiet.

Popped a long on the Saturday as it was fairly local (and I know a couple of the ED guys as they are from Birmingham). Unfortunately I couldn't make it on the Sunday due to sporting a horrific hangover. Shame as it seemed pretty hype for AE finals.

Very similar event to last year but the addition of a few better known players (Ryan Hart, ProblemX) made it slightly more entertaining and certainly grabbed a few extra stream views. I noticed WorstGiefEver and CapcomDawg were also in attendance.

To be honest, apart from a couple of people (Tyrant being one of them) the divide between Ryan and ProblemX and the others was far too great. I watched Ryan play as Rufus, Cammy, Akuma, Ryu and destroy most people. Saying that it was great to see a wide range of skill levels in attendance, a lot of people there for a bit of fun which made for quite a good atmosphere.

Nate, do close standing medium kick combos with Ken, they are the greatest.

I was more judging it on the steady decline over the past few years, but I certainly take the point that this event at the HOG was SVB in name only. I would like it to be a roaring success next year because it was cool that the UK had a genuine fighting game major that could attract international talent, but even at its peak you could tell that there were some reet dickheads organising it. If this has changed and they really do get their act together next year then by all means sign me up, because finals day at SVB and watching UK players try to beat Daigo in casuals when I did go was super hype even with the organisational clusterfuckery and needlessly abrasive staff members. Without that nonsense it would be the best thing ever.

I would dearly love for NeoEmpire to relaunch and not be a horribly cliquey and thoroughly unpleasant place to visit too, but I don't have a lot of faith in it happening.

Ah. I had the impression SVB had just been shoddily run, shame to hear there was an attitude problem too, that sucks.

I fought Nate tonight! A rare treat indeed. I'm still sad I'm missing out on Donut later. Maybe another night...

Alistarr, fight me on pc one day!

Let's! I will be around about 8 til 9.30 pretty much errrday this week and will probably be available at times this weekend also. After that I'll probably be even more available for a couple of weeks.

Do you chat when you play on PC? I think I'll have to use my laptop microphone unless you want to experience the buzzing bees that accompany wired headsets plugged into my TE stick.
