Ultra Street Fighter IV

It's a shame but I can see both sides of it, to be honest. There's a difference between a skippable pre-roll ad on a YouTube video and a direct download. I'm not convinced by the Prima/Brady argument - I think it's just Capcom doesn't get it. Capcom US was pushing for SFXT to be free-to-play but Japan eventually shut it down which is why you ended up paying £40 for a free-to-play game. They're just very slow to adapt, I think.

Anyway! I played this game last night after realising that I had the PC version. Took out the Error001 mod and off I went. The standard isn't great - I haven't played in ages and I think I lost four games out of about 15, which is way better than I ever did on XBL. I found one Ryu player who seemed to have pretty good fundamentals then he did a wakeup Ultra 1 in the first round and a random Super in the second. One of the matches I lost was to a Gief who alternately mashed lariat and empty jump 360. I started the second round with four throws and ate wakeup Ultra when I went for the fifth. Fair enough.

I lost to a Dudley - I always lose to Dudleys - and the very last match of the night I cracked and wakeup DPed against a Fuerte player who I'd already beaten three times. Just before that I found a genuinely good Ken player, 11k BP or so. Felt like I gave him a reasonable game but got bopped, of course. Swapped a couple of messages afterwards.

Anyway I enjoyed it very much. I must take the Xbox home at some point so I can play with you fine gentlemen again.

I think it is always going to be difficult to start charging for content if you haven't got some deal done with Capcom and as mentioned above UltraDavid has been banging on about the legal issues with the FGC for a while now (well it is his day job).

anyway I saw this on eBay, a graphic comic novel from 1994 :o

Having watched the video, the legal stuff didn't even seem that pertinent, I mean the whole rest of the team got corporate jobs elsewhere, and gootecks himself said he was getting bored of doing the same thing, although I'll concede he admits to feeling resentment towards capcom and being reluctant to keep exposing their products.

Strange that he's saying he wants to move into the direction of music and cosplay as surely music is going to have even more copyright stuff attached to it and who cares about cosplay? Fucking nae cunt that's who.

Aha! I've still got the original English release comics of that. It's actually pretty good. Though Ryu wears jeans and t-shirt for the most part, and eats a lot!

I don't know about this Capcom cease and desist. While I don't agree on this Youtube/ internet cease and desist/ DRM shitstorm that's been building up over the last few years (it is really getting ridiculous and I fully expect it to come to a head in the next 5 years) it is true that they were selling videos featuring Capcom IP footage, and that is a legal minefield at best.

Hindsight is 20/20, true, but they should've checked their legal position first. Gootecks even says that he was expecting it before they even made the video.

That said, there needs to be some defining legal status on DRM/ IP/ Internet. This is a stupidly messy subject, and things like SEGA recently pulling the plug on internet videos that feature footage of their games, Nintendo trying to stop the Smash Bros EVO Tourney, Universal and Paramount issuing cease and desist letters to reviewers reviewing their films/ series, etc. is absolutely insane.

There's already a lot of fairly clear case law on it though. Most of the cease and desists have little legal basis, they're just used to scare people who don't know better/can't afford a lawyer. The main issue being games companies not understanding that it's essentially free advertising for their products.

GGs to Curtis, Joe, andygt and the randoms yesterday evening. :) Curtis' Gouken gave me trouble as usual but I managed a few wins in other matches. I have a feeling I'll be out this evening so I'm not sure how much fighting I'll get done today...

Also is there any word on what Mike Ross is doing these day-

Oh. :(

I liked that video, particularly for how angry Newegg's subscribers were, and the bizarre assumption that Mike's pockets are fat with that FGC money.

Isn't it funny how the people who actually have tons of money to buy and build their own gaming systems like this just get it given to them??

It must be nice to be rich yet get shit given to you for free. This is part of what is fundamentally wrong with society.

So is is how society works. Rich people get everything that they can afford for free and then say they don't have enought and poor people are told, 'You suck. You got a $400 PC. Loser

My favourite comment though, was this:

this guy doesnt deserve any of this shit hes getting. hes so clueless. this loser is like a console gamer

I'd like to see Mike Ross given a brand new PC every day just to further upset that person.

While I don't think Mike Ross is particularly rich, I do kinda agree with those comments. There are surely poorer/ more deserving people who could benefit immensely from a free pc.

It does seem a bit off.

On topic lots of thanks to Alistarr for a particularly good set yesterday evening.

Definitely want moar Rufus!

Yeah the madcatz fightsticks are a good choice. Their gameshark store often has a sale on where you can pick up sticks for about £50 inc p+p.

I notice they have the original TE Round 2 for £80 which isn't bad. Also, they must have got rid of their SFxT stock as there doesn't appear to be any on the site.

Just got comprehensively destroyed by a sim, 90% of which was me walking face first into his fierce punches:(

I know this match is an uphill struggle for gief, but any advice on how to deal with this? I'd at least like to die with dignity.

Firstly, general 'Gief stuff:

Last time we played you were still using jab SPD when you could have been getting more damage. Again, remember when you're punishing at close range you want to use fierce SPD for the damage and if you're even closer use the 360 + kick grab as you get a free mix up after it. Jab is useful because it has ridiculous range, but at closer ranges you're just giving up damage by using it.

Try to avoid waking up with lariat or EX green hand. They both lose to throws and green hand is very unsafe if blocked. It's also a waste of an EX green hand when you could be using it to go through fireballs or end combos instead.

Against 'sim you have to be extremely patient. You can focus dash throughlimbs and try to inch your way in, and there are ranges where you can jump. You have to mix up which buttons you press when you jump to deal with his various anti-air options.

If you jump in and get hit by his back + roundhouse (the knee) then no button you can press will work and you need to either get closer or back up. If you're further out than that you can empty jump or jump with down + lk knees to land just outside of his anti-air knee range. You're not trying to hit him with your jump in, your aim is to land in front of him and make him whiff the anti-air so you can land and punish with jab SPD.

From further out (jumping over a fireball or jumping over his standing fierce) you can try and hit him with a jumping fierce. This is Gief's longest reaching air normal.

If you're in so close that he can't use the knee, use jumping medium kick. It points down quite far and can beat/trade with 'sim's anti-airs at close range.

You can also try and lariat limbs from full screen and EX green hand through his fireballs.

Use crouching medium kick and down-towards + roundhouse to inch forward without jumping.

Look for patterns from the 'sim player. If he's reacting to what you're doing, try to change up your approach. If he's just on autopilot throwing stuff out then you may have a chance to focus through or jump over something. If you block a standing fierce from 'Sim you can inch forward a little as it recovers.

Other than that, slowly walk forward and block. There is no magic solution that will get you in instantly, it's a slow grind and you have to wait for mistakes and take any inch of space that is given to you. You are going to take damage on the way in. This is unavoidable, but there is no need to rush and give it up for no reason. 99 seconds is a long time and Dhalsim has to play perfectly for nearly all of it. You can kill Dhalsim in ten seconds or less with ease, so if there are 60 seconds left on the clock you are still not obliged to hurry in the slightest.

When you do get in you can kill 'sim in two or three guesses, whereas he will take an age to slowly whittle away your health as you try to get in.

Patience is the key!

Oh, and practise this:

cr. jab - > cr. jab - > standing jab - > standing lk xx EX green hand.

Add/remove jabs as necessary depending on distance/how much time you want to hit confirm.

It's a really easy b'n'b combo and the point of it is to make the opponent scared of jumping away. If you're up close and the opponent is jumping, you want to hit them with normals to make them stay on the ground. However, if all they're being hit with is a standing medium punch or a couple of jabs, they'll take that over SPD every time. However, if you can turn those jabs into a combo it means they can't afford to hold up-back the whole time because the damage will really start to add up. There should be rounds you win with Gief where you don't land a single grab but instead kill someone for constantly trying to avoid grabs the entire time. The threat of the SPD is as valuable as landing it, so if you find an opponent who is completely and utterly focused on not getting grabbed, you need to make sure you can punish them accordingly.
