Ultra Street Fighter IV

Tourney report? Oh go on then. I'm eating hot wings and working from home tomorrow.

The venue was pretty cool and very trendy, at least upstairs. Downstairs there were two projector setups, one for SFIV and the other a SNES one for Mario Kart and eventually SFII, also a light gun game near the bar. Tourney signup was open pretty much straight away which validated the collective decision to get there early. 16-player tournament, single elimination, one fight: pretty sensible for a one-console thing.

First round: somehow, due to luck and magic (and my tactic of trying to sign Hegg up, but the dude spelling his name as "Hengg", and someone called Ben hearing that as his own name and playing the match when it was announced on the mic) there were no rllmuk-on-rllmuk matches in the first round. The result: rllmuk 7-0 everyone else. A few decent players caught the eye but mainly it was people just having a go for fun (and being very nice too).

Quarter finals: 7 rllmukers, and one other. Let's call him Django, because that was what he was called. At this point I started to feel a bit bad because we had basically taken over the whole thing. I can't remember the exact matches to my shame, but there were phone cameras out so video evidence will be forthcoming. By now the crowd was getting slightly hype, and the close matches were greeted with quite a bit of excited noise: it was amazing. Anyway, the first three matches were wins for Imp, Choo, and Django's fucking Adon over Freezycold, who has a good Rose, so I felt quite sad. Last QF was myself vs Hegg, and to my astonishment I managed to win a match that went to slivers of health on the final round. If it was best of three I'm sure he'd have figured me out, but as it was I was pretty chuffed to beat such a legit man. Proper shaky hands afterwards.

Semi-finals: First up, team Chimp treated us to a great match. Imp won through, despite (by his own admission) not hitting any combos at all - very hard when you have music and no noise from the game itself. Then it was myself vs. this Django fucker: Rose vs Adon again. I played OK but I failed to remember he'd shown he can Ultra fireballs on reaction, and that settled it. Was salty.

Final: Imp vs Django - not an Adon mirror, thank god, as our hero chose Ryu. Having had 7 players in a bracket of 8, it would have been quite the choke if team muk didn't win this one. It looked that way too as Django took the first round, but that was clearly Imp downloading terabytes. Lots of beatiful crossup tatsus and combos into sweep. Remember how Django can Ultra fireballs on reaction? He also Ultras st.mk on reaction and gets baited.

So Imp won the first tournament and some very cool prizes which I'm sure he will photoblog. I say first because we took a little break, and when we came back down there was already another one going: 32 players, one round only. By now the crowd was even bigger and cheering every god damn thing and it was awesome. Hegg was in this one too, and after a couple of wins our cheering had influenced the chap on the mic to start calling him "the people's champion". Damn straight.

Once it got to semi-finals, the organisers realised there was time to make it a proper fight, and switched back to normal rounds, and also best of three matches. In the semis my loyalties were split as Hegg's opponent was another Joe (the dude mistakenly announced it as a grudge match) who played a good and very Camel-like Dhalsim. Hegg won a quality match.

Final: Hegg vs Gief. Imp got a good view and recorded the match, hopefully he'll upload it so I'll spoiler the result:

HEGG

It was tremendous to see folks again and to meet new lovely people. Thanks everyone!

Miscellaneous highlights:
- Uzi turning up in a suit, and his plan to intimidate opponents ("I own this establishment")
- Uzi getting booed for his button setup, then admitting it doesn't really matter because he only uses one button
- Freezycold's "I have no idea what to do against this character" before the Adon match, and me not being able to offer anything useful
- Lots of chat about saltybet
- The girlfriend-boyfriend team on SFII taking on everyone. I beat her with Blanka before he used the downloaded knowledge to kill me proper
- The Mario Kart world champion who had a "MARIO KART WORLD CHAMPION" t-shirt
- Chatting with a dude outside who came too late to enter the tourneys, but had a fucking amazing SF baseball cap
- The top of the projector screen coming loose repeatedly so you couldn't see the life bars. "How do you know when to turtle?"
- Talking through the gentrification of London with Camel on the tube

Best of all though was managing to guess the song Imp was talking about from a description and him singing two notes.

I think I did okay against that Adon considering I hadn't a clue about him so was just reacting. Could have prob taken that last round if I'd jumped. This was actually my first time ever playing SFIV against anyone IRL. I was surprised at the turnout, the place was busier than I've ever seen it. Everyone's gay for SF I guess. It was fun, didn't someone mention another place that has regular SF action?

What a weird tournament that was!

First of all, and most importantly, it was lovely to see you guys, and I'll definitely have to try a bit harder to make it to HoG or the more easily accessible gaming pub in Caledonian rd. Great to see Hegg's beard doing so well in particular.

It was a really odd tournament though. It was Super, rather than AE, let alone AE2012. Single game, single elim. Projector displaying the game at 40fps or something. Broken HP button on both sticks; it didn't register HP if you pressed it in conjunction with another button, meaning no plinks, no ultras (unless you use the PPP button), no knife for Cody, but most importantly, no taunts. It also stopped me using a certain option select, but no one likes those, so I won't admit to trying to use it.

You know things are off to a grand start when the compeer is threatening Uzi with disqualification for having the gall to set up his buttons to his liking. (He likes the american straight six buttons, for some, probably perverted, reason). "You're taking the piss now, I'll disqualify you if you don't stop now." Cool guy. He thought Uzi was button checking.

It was weirdly structured as well. After the initial jubilation of seeing everyone from the muk steamroll their ways through the first round, I had to fight both Uzi and Choo, my homiest of boys. A profound sadness. I had a particularly British exchange with Choo right before our fight, both of us expressing the hope the other would win, both firmly believing the other stood a greater chance of beating Django, who was making his way up the other side of the ladder.

My whole tournament life seemed pretty fraudulent. I had no punishes, no combos (putting that down to the above problems helped me sleep last night), and no shame about using gimmicks. Still, it was pretty fun! I got some stuff I will most certainly photoblog later.

The second tournament was even weirder, but nice to see Hegg play some pretty dominant sets once they switched the format to best 2/3 rounds, 2/3 games. Shame there wasn't more time for us to play casuals, and there were a few dicks resolutely hogging the SNES SF2 setup. The best thing probably happened after everyone but Choo and I had left though. This dude sidled up to us outside and began to regale us of his times spent in the arcades of Osaka, and the one time he challenged Daigo on xbl. For close to an hour. Or twenty minutes that felt like an hour. WHATEVER.

But yes, we must do something again. I played a lot of SF with Choo over the past few days, and I must say, the luxury having no lag affords, by which I mean being able to block Oni's EX demon slash bullshit, is marvellous. I will make the monstrous trek to Acton, if need be!

That tournament guy was funny. I asked him specifically because I thought they might have an issue with button changing due to time "mate can I change my buttons?"- He said "Yeah! Go ahead!"

30 seconds later, a single drop of anime sweat is falling down my brow as the crowd is booing because I hit back instead of confirm and the guy goes "I'M GONNA DISQUALIFY YOU" clearly changing his tune to join the mob.

Next time, when I had to fight Imp, I didn't dare try and change the buttons again lest I get mauled by this girl in the front who cheered everytime there was an ultra (whether it whiffed or hit) who didn't like the downtime of menus. That is obviously why I lost.

Brilliant write-ups guys, loving it. Was so good to see everyone, and to meet Uzi. Sorry I didn't get to meet Freezy properly though.

Couple more highlights:

- being asked as I sat down to one fight if I was 'doing' Bully cosplay.

- having a drunk guy to my left ask me if I was going to make Gief a family man (he was really excited that I played Guile).

There's more, it'll come to me, will pop back in later when I've got a bit more time.

Don't worry Uzi. I moaned at the organiser for the button boos for you.

Ha thanks man. I felt I was taking the piss a little in doing it, but I did ask and I really struggle to play on default! I think at proper tourneys I should lug around a pre wired stick with the button inputs switched lol

Also apparently Super Versus Battle starts tomorrow? WTF?

The HK button thing was weird and meant no reliable anti-airs for me. The whole set-up was a bit weird actually - laggy projector, no sound, a screen that kept falling down.

Was gutted to get Choo in the second round but at least it was a close match. I was surprised he wasn't disqualified for chipping me out for the win.

As everyone else said it was great seeing everyone get through the first round, and then a bit of a shame that we all had to face each other.

Hegg impersonator was funny. Especially when I told him and his mates Hegg's name. 'Hegg?! Hegg?!' they all kept saying.

Button change boos were annoying. Come on ffs, he only took a few seconds.

SF2 hogs were also annoying, telling Imp 'no!' when he asked them to let someone else have a go. That girl who won was bloody good. Bit gutted for my mate Stef only getting one game all night.

Was great seeing everyone again and meeting Uzi and Freezy and above all it was excellent fun, so yes, HoG soon guys eh eh eh?

It was so much fun in fact that I completely forgot to eat. I made sure I had plenty to drink though.

Wonderful battle stories sirs. The fact the setup was a wee bit rubbish makes it sound even more fun to me, really. Wish I was there. Was there a Krispy Kreme nearby?

Also also, aren't the location tests for the new Guilty Gear this weekend too? I'm excited about that.

On my phone so no link, but look up Heart of Gaming, and let us know if you fancy joining us next time we go.

That dude wot I mentioned talked my ear off about street fightins in Japan also mentioned those guys who were there before us had let slip that they were apparently quite salty about being beaten by 'less serious players'.

So supermega jealous. Looking forward to some visuals from it. Imagine we all lived nearer each other, like pals? I should probably arrange fightings with Jiro for some time in the future. Especially since the next Glasgow tournament, King of Irn Fist, clashes quite spectacularly with my favourite auntie's wedding. I'll be there for the second days' casuals, even though the second day of these things tends to get a bit more serious business.

Also, Alpha Papa was great! There's even a Jason related joke, for all you Jasons of the thread (at least both).

Lovely write ups guys, well done one and all, I am jealous and also excited to see photos. For a moment I pondered Joffo's dream of us all living near one another like pals and shed a solitary tear. What a beautiful situation that would be.

Also, it's a pretty damning indictment of how much Streetfighter I play that I can now consistently block Oni's cross up slashes online and sometimes even punish them. Or it might just be that I have two Oni players at my local tournaments as well as Allystah's Oni as a regular opponent. It still nauseates me slightly that they're talking about making the EX one less punishable on block in ultra though. I'd rather see Oni get sensible buffs than them making his stupid stuff more stupid.
