Ultra Street Fighter IV

Been mostly avoiding this thread while I catch up on Evo (HYPE!) but can now pop my head in and declare my unfaltering love of SFxT. I haven't played for a while and I'm rubbish at it, but it's a truly great game. I might start playing it again now the SFIV league seems to have come to a halt.

Watching KOF XIII has made me want to play that some more too although it's pretty hilarious watching it played properly and contrasting with my own efforts. Such a great game to watch. So much jumping :D

I tried watching SSB but couldn't take it seriously :/

How do rank the tournaments then?

For me it went Marvel > Smash > SF > KoF > Injustice.

Marvel definitely had the most hype and greatest upsets, Smash had quite a few unconventional characters being used which made it excellent, SF had all the greats playing but little hype really, it's all very dignified; like watching a Chess master tournament - you're in awe of their amazing play but it can feel a little slow.

If I knew about KoF perhaps I'd rank it higher but I know fuck all about it, all I know is that it's like Street Fighter but jumps matter a bit more? It seemed like it was probably really good if you knew more about it. Injustice - love the game but I find my brain wandering when I watch people play, it's not a flashy game really.

Seriously, I don't understand the way people treat professional SSBM, It's a fighting game that sacrifices traditional combo's but in-turn gains some seriously mental movement freedom a ton more confrontations (unlike Marvel's one touch and that's death.)

I mean the execution and reactions are still there with the crazy edge manipulation and wave-dashing but players constantly have to react to their surroundings, very rarely will there be a player just be sitting there eating a combo (except for maybe the Wobbles combo but that's usually banned). It's just a much more analogue game which I think people confuse with having less depth when really it's just harder to convey the strategy clearly because of the amount of situational variety there is.

...

If SF is Chess, Smash Bros is Go.

Had a worrying thought; Capcom are ripping so much from SFxT, what if the new character is just someone from tekken with a focus attack stuck on? They did say "new to street fighter", but I guess they could justify that by considering SFxT a "crossover" game.

Say it ain't so, capcom:(

Not quite sure what you mean there about mvc3, to me it feels about as different as you can get from SFIV. It's a completely different engine, isn't it?

I thought it was built on the SF4 engine? In any case, I probably wasn't clear. mvc3 does feel as different as you can get from SF4 despite the obvious superficial similarities. What I meant was that SFxT was the opposite; it felt too much like SF4.

Yes. I think he has a foot fetish as well. This is based entirely on one comment about Poongko's stomps 2 years ago and one comment about Gamerbee's standing roundhouse this year.

I too loved Mike Ross 'n' Combofiend. What was it they were giggling about in that one match?

I don't understand why everyone's calling the copy'n'paste from strekken lazy. Capcom could easily have just tweaked balance and added in a few modes and we'd be happy, so this is a nice extra. I know that it's not exactly building new characters from scratch, but there's still going to be some work involved in balancing them, adding in new animations and stuff. Hopefully the new modes will be lovely as well. Getting all the extra costumes to dress imaginary fighting game men in is also kind of a bonus i guess, since I could never be bothered to pay for them all.

I just hope that they don't bring the music from the bloody pit stop stage over.

They should release SFxT2 instead.

Maybe the 5th character is Sheng Long. Who turns out to be Dhalsim's grandfather and is basically Dhalsim but with a DP, a command throw, good jump speed and excellent dashes. And a completely unblockable ultra that sets the entire stage on fire while Sheng Long does the Macarena.

I was really hoping they would call the update Super Street Fighter IV Turbo, I just think ULtra sounds a bit crap.

I'd planned on watching just a little bit of the UMVC3 finals but ended up watching the whole thing. I am completely useless at the game but know how things work enough to really appreciate what's being done.

Loved the chant of "Shuma! Shuma! Shuma!" and was rooting for Justin so much by the end.

Might watch the SSFIV finals tonight, haven't played any fighting games since I moved house a few months back but so hyped now I want to attempt to become barely competent at a couple of them again.

Quick SFxT thoughts, I know the broken online killed the game for me and a friend back at the beginning, I don't think he ever went back to it even when they fixed it, I kept playing it offline, loved the character pack but like Asura, I could appreciate what they were trying to do with the Tekken characters but never really got comfortable with any of them, even my boy Yoshimitsu.

So the news the four characters from that are coming to SSFIV was very much appreciated as I loved messing around with Elena and Poison in SFxT.

It does seem a bit daft to me to do a thorough balance patch but at the same time add in new characters. What if they're hilariously broken? Imagining an all-Rolento top 8 at every tournament from now until they do another patch. Shudder.

I've never tried Elena because she was DLC so looking forward to that. Looking forward to the whole thing really, should be good fun. We should do a day one rllmuk tournament with only new characters allowed. And only Pitstop 109, max BGM volume.

(Speaking of which things, I will do a big post about where we are with the league when things are quieter - but basically, Camel won the B-league, JLM may well have won the A-league but I need to check, and everyone is still welcome to play their ither fixtures just for fun like).

I haven't been able to check if it's true as I'm in work but capcom fighting games or on sale on xbox live apparently, including 3rd Strike for 300 points? Bargain.

I might download UMvC3 and give on of you fine gents my disc. I didn't keep the box, though, so it will be in a Daphne and Celeste CD single case, probably.

I don't have a problem with the four characters being ported over. I honestly thought they'd do it at some point. I do have a bit of a problem with ALL the new stages being from Strekken. One or two fresh nee stages would've been welcome. I also don't think Orbital Elevator and the Jurassic Park ones fit SF, even tho I love the Jurassic Park one.

I just think it looks like Capcom are pulling away from Strekken. Which is sad.

So, just to make sure in regards to Ultra's implementation - Does this mean that there will no longer be an AE 2013 balance patch, and it will all be rolled into Ultra when it releases?

Having the PC version, I'm pretty glad they've made Ultra it's own thing, as it'll give the team an excuse to actively update all the formats at once. It's pretty neat you can skip AE for Ultra too, as the bog-standard copy of Super that I have for console is just gathering dust on the shelf.

also what on earth were they thinking giving sim a focus breaking limb. That's insanity.

Is that true? Excellent stuff. Not really insanity though. It's a free get-in for everyone when they can focus and dash through absolutely anything Sim throws out. He needs a buff of some kind at this point I think.
