Ultra Street Fighter IV

Yeah, I don't actually think it's Skullomania, I'd just like it :) I think the phrasing of that statement heavily implies that it's an existing character who just hasn't ever been in an SF game. Whilst I'd love it to be a Red Earth, Power Stone or Rival Schools character, it probably won't be anything that exciting. Are there any more Capcom characters in SFxT (other than Mega Man).

I didn't see the tweet myself but Ono also said it's not Asura from Asura's wrath. A lot of people felt it probably would be. Haggar makes a lot of sense, since they'll already have five characters from Final Fight and he's the most famous one. He has a fair bit of crossover with Zangief, moveset wise, but he does have a unique moustache.

I hope it's Gene from God Hand again, because it's been a while since I hoped for Gene from God Hand.

I thought putting Haggar in Marvel was a great idea but I'd be very disappointed if he's the fifth USF4 character. Lariat, pile driver, jumping roundhouse dropkick, body splash. Gief already has a Haggar alt. costume and I think that's plenty.

Perhaps a little. It's more of a cult game with a hardcore scene keeping it alive at the moment. It had a decent turnout at Evo though and the current version is an excellent game based on footsies, fundamentals and making every decision count because your mistakes are so costly. It's a shame it was such a horrible mess before v.2013 because the current build deserves to be doing better.

It doesn't have the safety nets of SF4 and it's not afflicted by the vortex curse either. You won't die off a sweep but you can die off two or three bad decisions, making it more like Super Turbo in that respect. It rewards great reads and good decisions and it tends to be that the winning player outplayed the losing one. It also has a strong emphasis on careful managment of your resources, both in terms of having two life bars to look after and your meter being absolutely invaluable. Ultradavid believes it to be the best game of this generation ( he calls it the CVS2 of this generation) and there are world class players who agree with him.

Aside from EWGF there isn't anything I find horribly brainless, and the saving grace of that is that even the players with magical hands still can't use it with 100% consistency. It wasn't strong enough to be a deciding factor at Evo anyway.

If I weren't so deeply, deeply in love with SF4 I'd play it, and at the very least I give it a vote when they do the polls asking what the third game should be at our monthly tournaments.

I think the main issue working against it now that balancing and bugs have been fixed is that it looks and sounds so hideous. It doesn't feel nearly as lovely to play as SFIV or SF3 even though there is a case to be made for its fighting system being better than both of theirs. I certainly think it's a better game than Third Strike, but I don't find it as utterly joyous to play.

Just throwing this out there - is this a veiled admission from Capcom that SFxT failed? Was it ever popular? I liked it - still do, but don't hear other people mentioning playing it these days.

I was really disappointed with it. I was excited about it before it came out, but once it arrived, I played for an evening over at a friend's, and came away thinking two things.

Firstly, it felt too much like SFIV with stuff tacked on. Like naturally Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is a game which used Street Fighter IV as a base, but it's a very different game - whereas SFXT couldn't seem to decide whether it was something new or more of the same. In fighting games, I generally don't like complexity for the sake of it, and I didn't get a good grasp of stuff like the gems or Pandora or any of that stuff, but I certainly didn't like it right away either (whereas I never got the same feeling from the ISM system in Alpha, or the Groove system in CvS2, or SF3's system...). It's a shame that they didn't move further from the Street Fighter template with it.

Second thing was that I like Tekken, but one of the things about SFXT was that it transplanted those characters into a Street Fighter game (obviously), which meant their move lists were re-interpreted in a Street Fighter style. I suppose what I mean is that if I sit down to a fighting game and want to play as Paul Phoenix, I kinda want him to play like Paul Phoenix. Think about Kyosuke in Capcom Vs SNK 2 or Hayate/Megaman in Marvel Vs Capcom 2 - they were transplanted out of different games but still retained a sense of what they were like in their original games. This latter thing though is very much a personal tilt and is more a consequence of Street Fighter and Tekken being very different games than a mistake on Capcom's part.

I only played it in VS for about 2 hours, so naturally these were kneejerk reactions and they're not genuine criticisms of the game.

I have wondered in the past if SFxT might have worked really well as a Power Stone style game, with that roster.

blipwoo:

Poison is a bit of a lost soul in Strekken. I like the tools they've given her and I wanted to play her when it first came out but it's hard to know what she's supposed to do. She can zone a bit and she can pressure a bit and she has decent footsies but she isn't excellent at any of those things. She has an interesting fireball that has limited range but stays active a long time, she has a decent dragon punch and she has rekkas. Not great damage but good, safe pressure that's annoying to fight against. I think she might be a better fit in SFIV where she could use her EX moves more freely and presumably have the option of FADC-ing her uppercut. Also some of her normals will be absolutely godlike in SFIV if they stay as they are now, whereas SFXT is a land filled with godlike normals and hers don't stand out.

I would be in favour of Larry Butz.

I did a thing!

I don't think I'll ever clear all of the challenges, but I'm really pleased that I've got the last gold title for Juri. I had something like the first 18 cleared but since I recently rediscovered the awesome FSE target combo stuff that you can do, the trials required for the above title were fairly straightforward. Apart from #22, which took me a million tries because I kept forgetting where my fingers were.

Lovely. On the USF4 front, what ice cream/milk shake flavour are we going to give it? Also do people like USF4? Do we just call it "Ultra"? These are important issues people.

P.S. I am hype for Mad Gear Hideout being ported over from Strekken because that stage is wonderful and has a glorious Final Fight music medley as its soundtrack,.

Hugo and the stages were my favourite part of SFxT by a mile so I'm kind of pleased they're coming over but I can't believe how staggeringly lazy it seems to pull so many assets from it. They'll play differently obviously, and more characters I'll never learn is probably great but it's just a really weird and kind of dirty thing to do, even by Capcom standards. It would be nice if they went to the trouble of giving them trials and that but I'm not expecting them to this time either. I'm a lot more interested in the balance changes than anything else really.

Did anyone notice how many viewers AE or Marvel had at their peak? It was like 130k during Smash before I stopped watching live last night which is higher than I remember AE being the years I've got up at 4am for it. Woaft.

Also, which of the Zelda games on the DS is the most good?
