Ultra Street Fighter IV

Despite the fact that they're milking SF4 for all it's worth, I'm impressed that the roster's grown so much without making the game unplayably broken. Is there any other mainline SF title that pulls in so many characters from older series? Usually when they try to get everyone together in one game we end up with a Capcom Fighting Jam or something, but I quite like the fact that all these additions have been made, and it'll be a shame if SF5 is announced years later with an eight character roster, all of whom are from SF2 :P

Alpha 3 has tonnes of character, but I don't know how well balanced it is.

I really struggle to think of what they could possibly do for Street Fighter 5. I wouldn't be too surprised if it were close to a decade away. Ultra Street Fighter IV (Us Fiv[e]) will be a even more of a Street Fighter mega-mix that AE already is. Surely the list of Street Fighter characters not in the game is now outnumbered by those who are? It's wild.

There are still some decent Alpha characters missing, as are a few of the absolute best SFIII ones. But yeah, in terms of SF characters than anyone has heard of or cares about, they're all in there now I think. The Alpha characters missing are Birdie (who would be nice to round out the original SF crew), Sodom (ditto but for Final Fight), Charlie (because we can have four Ryu's but having a second Guile is pointless?), Karin (can't remember how she plays) and R.Mika, who is the only one who I think would make a really good addition to the current lineup. The III characters missing who would be worth having are just Q, Oro and Alex I think, as most of the others were just replacements for II or Alpha characters who are already in IV.

Personally, I’d always be excited to see what they’d do with the series so I’d be signing up the second the thing was announced. What I’m really hoping for is that they abandon SFIV after another update or two and do something like Alpha, but maybe with the characters old instead of young (Street Fighter Omega?). Ryu and Ken are old, any old members of the cast are dead (Gouken’s function would be totally removed by an old Ryu anyway). Have the characters we know fight completely differently, and introduce younger characters who play like the old favourites. Kind of like what they were originally going to do with III, but better executed so that it doesn’t alienate fans and without the 180 before release.

Necro is the best Street Fighter III character and aside from stretchy limbs he remains pretty unique. I'd say Urien is more unique than Q since Q has some parallels with Balrog (but with the added threat of his great command grab). No idea how Urien's Aegis Reflector would work in IV's engine.

Alex is excellent too. I think, even though I'd personally prefer Necro, he'd be the best fit for the IV series. Oro would also be brilliant. They'd all be brilliant.

Birdie would be my main choice from Alpha, not that there's many folk left there. He looks awesome. Karin kinda played a bit like a Rekka character with a load of special counter moves, I think? I really dislike her look but she probably plays well enough to work. Is R. Mika a lot like El Fuerte? I always felt she'd play a bit like him but I never used her.

I still want them to add that chap in the tartan apron from the distillery stage.

ADD EVERYONE. DO NOT STOP. ADD ALL THE ALPHA STAGES. CONSUME EVERYTHING.

I want Gill, the absolute best and most interesting boss in any fighting game and for some reason they went with a cheap knockoff for SF4?

Seth really is naff in comparison, amend that Capcom! #Gill2014

@Ulala.

I do not agree with most of what you say. This event was for us Europeans in the middle of the night, if not very early in the morning from Sunday to Monday. Sure, report on this championship, but for a brief period avoid mentioning the winners on the front page. At least give "us" a change to catch up.

You definitely do. So good.

I stopped watching at injustice so I missed Marvel and AE. I need to pay the americans to watch the archives, right? You can't watch archives on the 360's twitch app, can you? :(

Not sure, I don't have the app on my 360. That link is fine on an old-fangled computer though, unless you crank up the resolution.

I don't rmember how Urien plays at all, but I remember endless fun trying to get Q's moves to work. Forgot about Necro, he's brilliant. R. Mika plays like a faster, weaker Zangeif from what I remember.

Sorry but nope, calling them muppets for leading with one of the big stories of the day is dumb. It's reasonable to expect that i) if someone really cared, they'd be watching it live anyway, once something airs in its own country, it's fair game; ii) news outlets have a duty to report news, this is undeniable fact. If you don't, someone else will and you risk losing readers as a result. Evo is arguably the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, its winners are gonna make the headlines, its inevitable. What you're suggesting is akin to Boxing News not leading with the outcome and victory photos of a major heavyweight title fight in Vegas because some people haven't gotten round to watching it on catchup. Hell, you could even say the SF4 final was just in time for the other end of Europe to watch over breakfast.

The real answer is don't visit any videogame sites until you've had a chance to catch up, not blaming journos for doing their jobs.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, bro.

Watching UMVC3 Finals. That intro animation + Yipes as announcer = me in hype overdrive.

edit: @Ulala, I know, you are right. I was just a bit ticked off. I had my Monday morning at work all worked out: boot up system, make yoghurt and pineapple breakfast, start e-mail program, start archive, keep an eye on incoming e-mails (as in, check once every 15 minutes), get silently and sneaky HYPE! But alas :(

I watched the end of AE semis and then top 8 this morning.

Gutted for PR Balrog - I was really hoping he'd at least make Grand Finals. He played brilliantly though and provided by far the most excitement for me during the latter stages. Also enjoyed Haitani and Sako's showings very much.

I felt a little more warmly disposed to Xian this time, and have to admit I really admire how far he's taken that ridiculous character.

Also what was with Laugh and Infiltration? :(

There are a few, as has been said. Personally I'd echo the following:

Karin would be interesting. Given, some of her gameplay is incorporated into Fei Long/Yang (well, her Rekka move) but she has counters, which would work a bit like Gouken's. I'd see her as someone with Sakura's strength and speed with that counter game, which would make her interesting and distinct from other characters in the game.

R.Mika might be fun, but I think she's need to be reworked to make her stand out among a crowded cast. I'm not sure what they'd do, though. SFIV already has Zangief and now Hugo covering the slow, lumbering wrestler angle, Abel covering a kind of mid-speed wrestler and El Fuerte as a fast wrestler. Mika would need some kind of clever "hook" to really make her a contender, I think. Personally I'd love to see them break with convention and try to make a "charge wrestler", as that's something which doesn't yet exist in SFIV; I suspected Hakan was going to be one given he has a build like Honda and Blanka, but nope.

Charlie/Nash (or even Remy) might be interesting if they differentiate him from Guile. I can see them making them weaker but more nimble, with a similar theme but very different playstyle (thinking like how Sakura is to Ryu).

There are other characters too, but as has been said, whilst some of them would have amusing or fun moves, they may share moves with existing cast members or be too similar to existing characters. Sean, for example, might not pan out so well in a game which has Ken, Dan and Abel. Maki, from Capcom Vs SNK2 (a Final Fight character) probably isn't needed in a game with Guy, Vega, El Fuerte, Rolento and Gen's Crane Stance. Kyosuke and Batsu from Rival Schools would be fun, but they're both shotos (of sorts) as are a few others from those games.

Personally I don't really care for Birdie and Sodom. I didn't use them much so can't really say much about them, but I never found their fighting styles very interesting. In honesty, let's just be glad they're not going to bring back Skullomania or Doctine Dark.

My Live runs out tomorrow, so I might play some SF4 today. Not right now, of course - it's way too nice out.

Those poor guys, it's not like they're from Microsoft. They probably didn't even make the decision to accept the contract or go exclusive or whatever.

I'd be up for some Skullomania.
