Ultra Street Fighter IV

So happy to see Xian win this. I've always liked the chap but it's been a real joy to watch him really start to dominate the competitive scene over the last year or so. I know a lot of his matches seem to be set-up after set-up as he washes over his opponents, but when he plays top players, it's never quite that easy, and you can see his amazing patience, adaptive skills, footsies and reads coming more to the forefront. It's also hard to understate how ridiculously technically proficient the man is. Great to see the herculean amount of work he's put in pay off. Massively well deserved.

I'm almost sad he didn't have a chance to prove he could kill Infiltration too, cos I certainly believe he could do it.

Speaking of whom, props to the guy for busting out Hakan in his hour of need. I know Hakan's a hard counter for Balrog, but to switch away from his main when his tournament life was hanging by a thread certainly took guts. I think Seth was on the money though, not to take anything away from Tokido's fantastic game plan, but that seemed to take a lot out of Infiltration. Ugh. I wish I wasn't so hype so I could get an hour or two of sleep though. Damn.

Incredible

So glad I stayed up for this:) Hakan in the top 8! Gen winning! Every time I think this game is going to settle down into predictable tier lists, something new appears and everything's turned on its head. Can't wait to see how Ultra SF4 is going to change things next year.

Ooh. Double Hugo on the Skyscraper Under Construction stage. Just woke up so I missed all the Evo'n. Tuned out after one match of Injustice. I'll probably catch up later. It's all sounding pretty excellent.

Dhalsim getting that extra hit on his far mk is pretty excellent.

And where my Wii U version? :(

Gah, I just found out the latest Evo results whilst looking up sources for that new SF4 update. Despite having missed a load of stream action throughout :( The one I was rooting for pulled it off though, so yay :D

Do not visit Eurogamer us you were planning to watch the finals during breakfast. Winner is right in the headline. Muppets :/

Come on dude, don't be silly. News sites report news, it's what they do. You wouldn't expect a newspaper or BBC site to just say 'Wimbledon Championship Over' or something, of course they'll always lead with the winners, just like they should do.

Despite the fact that they're milking SF4 for all it's worth, I'm impressed that the roster's grown so much without making the game unplayably broken. Is there any other mainline SF title that pulls in so many characters from older series? Usually when they try to get everyone together in one game we end up with a Capcom Fighting Jam or something, but I quite like the fact that all these additions have been made, and it'll be a shame if SF5 is announced years later with an eight character roster, all of whom are from SF2 :P

I'm worried they're going to break everything with the new characters. When do they announce the 5th? Sorry if it's been mentioned already, but I didn't stay up for top 8 so I'm avoiding reading the thread as much as possible just in case.

I really struggle to think of what they could possibly do for Street Fighter 5. I wouldn't be too surprised if it were close to a decade away. Ultra Street Fighter IV (Us Fiv[e]) will be a even more of a Street Fighter mega-mix that AE already is. Surely the list of Street Fighter characters not in the game is now outnumbered by those who are? It's wild.

One thing that always amazes me when I think about it is that the long wait I remember experiencing in the 90s waiting for a Street Fighter 3 was only six years; 1991 to 1997. Less for me really since I didn't even get a SNES with the game until 1993. The gap between the first SFIII and IV was 11 years! Almost double.

And the original character roster created for Street Fighter IV; Abel, C. Viper, El Fuerte, Rufus, Gouken, Seth, Juri, Hakan, Oni surpasses the number of original selectable World Warriors. Sometimes I like to imagine the game was released with just those characters in the first place. Mostly because when I'm not playing Street Fighter my imagination is simply unable to work with anything else.

What an unusual game that would have been.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited for USFIV and the inevitable broken nonsense it brings. I'm also far too optimistic about the new modes they're touting, so I'm looking forward to the crushing disappointment to follow there, too. Imagine us all, early 2014, all eagerly online to try out new nonsense.

I'd have paid full price for AE for Makoto's lp.fukiage alone.

Hey everyone. Apologies for not being around for the last month or so. Things went awry. Sadly this also meant I totally missed the run-up to Evo and the Hype, and only realised it was Evo weekend late yesterday. I'm back now though, excited and wanting to play some SF. I'll be online at 2pm (I'm making a firm time) for a good few hours. Hopefully some of you wonderful people will be around for some relaxed games to get reaquainted with this wonderful game. I may well be showing as offline because there's some friends I wanna avoid today, but I will definitely be on so message me if you're up for some fightings.

I've missed you all.

Evo  This years was amazing. I love how much psychological warfare goes into these matches.

A friend of mine went this year so very eager to hear from him how it was :) Cannot wait for next years one, think I might even go myself if things work out.

Both marvel and ssf4 were incredible to watch. Amazing match after match. The end of marvel was heartstopping to watch but really showed how the crowd is always there to support the underdog and that winning isn't everything. Also is there any other 'sport' or competition where you feel as close to the competitors in seeing their emotions under that much pressure?

I thought AE was inspiring, not only were all the competitors worthy and goodsports but it really felt like they stepped it up a notch from previous years and felt like the hype carried over from marvel infecting them. Even more amazing the commentary worked and didn't condescend too much or veer too much away from the action. It did seem they didn't acknowledge some of the amazing psychology going on though, when for example, you could see Sako vs Infiltration first game, Sako seemed to have a perfect read and reaction to everything but then just struggled to be confident in his game to pull it through (I reckon he should have gone with Cammy...). Every game had so many mindgames to it, if only Tokido had spent more time being confident in his antiairs he could have won it I reckon (though Xian every bit deserved it for his play throughout).
