See, I was taught that you just added an apostrophe if it was already plural. If it wasn't already plural then you added apostrophe S.

So, Ross becomes Ross's.

Teachers becomes Teachers'.

Sadly I think you were taught wrong, or we'd see things like:

Dice becomes Dice'

Data becomes Data'

Stylii becomes Stylii'

It's the final S that is important, not the grammar leading to it being there. If you need an apostrophe S on a word that ends in S, you just add the apostrophe. Some old hymns give good examples of this, talking about Jesus' love, etc. But hey, you know, it's all just silly rules some dead men invented (or stole from other, better, older languages). And now you can say Jesus's if you want as well, because the rules have been broken so many times that they've ended up changing a bit.

I thought if you were talking about a thing that belonged to someone then regardless of what their name ended with it was 's.

EG:

cale's hair pomade

Yasawas's hair pomade

Other uses I'm not clear on at all and just add an apostrophe or an apostrophe s depending on what mood I'm in on the day. Or if it's going to wind someone up.

I forgot to mention that this was for words that were plural AND ended in S already. Otherwise we'd see the things you mention.

It all sounds very complicated to me. Best to just outlaw use of the letter S from here on out.

Be interested in how old everyone discussing this is, and if there appears to be a time this was changed in schools.

Pretty sure I missed the only English lesson in my entire education that dealt with punctuation. The rest of the time was spent reading Macbeth or Lord of the Flies or Penthouse. Punctuation-wise I've winged it most of my life - hence my love of hyphens in the middle of sentences. Also my complete ignorance as to when one uses a semi colon.

Joffo you should go back to Vanquish, it really is quite special. The difficulty seems a bit inconsistent (eg the massive robot in the first level required quite a few restarts, then later levels I found I could just blaze through) but it's just so fucking cool. The story made no sense to me whatsoever but that's usually the case anyway.

I'm going back to Bayonetta next to see if I can finally get it to click.

The semicolon is the ponciest of all the punctuation marks. I adore them, and was told off for overusing them the other day.

I used to use them a lot back in the day. Together with commas I just ended up trying to make the longest and wildest sentences ever. :P

Sounds positively Orwellian*.

*Book assist! (Fearing that this reference to a note Orwell wrote about one of his less celebrated novels may be a little obscure even for our current erudite company, I figured I ought to share the passage to the bottom left below, (from the introduction to Coming Up For Air)):

Personally I like a good semicolon;

On the xbox I just changed the network DNS settings to manual rather than automatic, making the primary DNS 173.199.144.68 and the secondary 206.214.214.28 and I can access the American content. When I want to change back I just switch to automatic DNS again. I think it's much the same process on PS3 too.

It's for King of the Hill.

EDIT: Oh, and I didn't pay anything or sign up for any trials or anything; I just put those numbers in and it worked. I have no idea if this makes me a bad person. I am pleading ignorance.

Also, I played an hour and a half of Xenoblade Chronicles today because I'm hungover. I accepted approximately one million sidequests in a town that was impossibly large. Then I turned into a girl with an infuriating squawk when she leaps, and I leap everywhere. I had to deliver soup to the man I used to be and talk about the sunset a bit. Then I accidentally lept into the sea and ended up in a battle without knowing how they control and died. I't pretty good so far.

I'm now about to play Wheel of Fortune on the Wii. You use motion controls to spin the wheel as well as stopping a golf-game style power meter, when it really ought to be one or the other. And whatever the power level there's absolutely no impact on speed of the wheel anyway, so it might as well have spun itself. I lose every game.

I played another ten minutes of Tatsunoko vs Capcom as well. I'm rubbish at it.

Okay so there are a million videos out there that help people get started with SFIV, but Latif's started some of his own for Razer. The first episode went up a few days ago and covers game rules, screen overview, movement, normals, specials, unique attacks, throws/throw techs, blocks, dashes, stun, quick recovery, taunts and maybe some other bits I missed. It's the general fundamental stuff that we're all familiar with, but if the future tutorials are delivered with the same clarity and patience it could be a good series. :)

Leaping everywhere is indeed the correct way to play the game. Hyup. Hngh. Hngh. Hyup. Hngh.

Sounds like you're only a few hours away from the end of the tutorial village now!

If there's one thing the stuttered sleep of the ill is good for, it's expanding one's internet horizons.

My friend has been telling me to download the Akira soundtrack for a while now, and pointed me to a blog called Convertible to Yokohama. It's an amazing high concept blog which revels in the aesthetic and vibe of 80s Tokyo in the peak of the bubble. As the blog puts it, think smoky nightclubs, suits, skirts, and affluence. Think Lifestyle.

I did a little digging and found the guy made some killer mixes too.

Aspirational.

Haha, RPGs's ten hour intros. It looks just the right blend of dreadful and quite nice as well, which I think is important for an RPG. The combat reminds me of Knights of the Old Republic more than anything. I've not really played a lot of RPGs with cooldown and free movement stuff. I swam around in the water for about 20 minutes to every flicker of blue collectable I saw.

I'm excited about playing Darkstalkers for ten minutes in a few weeks!
