Ultra Street Fighter IV

Wreck It Ralph had lovely Street Fighter references. There weren't as many game references as I'd hoped overall, but there were some pretty ace ones. Also, the start line tune for the Sugar Rush section is a brilliantly catchy and game-y thing. I also like the animations of Fix-It Felix's wee pals when they're no longer wee sprites.

Also, deliberately whiffing a sweep just out of range as Akuma to bait a sweep punish from your opponent then cancelling your recovery into demon is my favourite Ultra setup.

I played wild, wild amounts of the videogame Super Street Fighter 4 (suitable for ages 12 and up) over the weekend. As a rapidly ageing single man, this was absolutely the best use of my time possible, I'd say. I'm giving C to C ago, a la Joe, and have as a result managed to piss away loads of my points while flailing uselessly with various cast members, which was delightful.

There was also a long set of me getting bodied by JLM's random select, and then maybe 25 games of my Ryu against Alistarr's Oni. It was very good fun, especially because for some reason alistarr decided to go against all logic and play a footsies oni instead of a shenanigans oni, against which I am helpless. There were many, many missed ultra 1's, which also added to the general fun and enjoyment. Also I am convinced that oni's air ex tatsu is somehow + on whiff, since every attempted punish ate an invincible move.

even sourly took Ryu on ranked and managed to win some ryu mirror matches against many with many, many more meaningless internet numbers than me. I'd forgotten how nice it was having a useful normal anti-air, giving how piss my reactions are for anti-air uppercuts. Then I repeatedly played someone called something like xgoodxgame, who has the single most insane vega I have ever played. It's just constant buttons and wilding and god knows what else. He's A rank with vega, but has like 1500pp or something, which was delightfully incongruous.

That does sound pretty lovely. Do you have to set the Ultra 1 up a particular way?

I was fighting a Sakura the other day as Dhalsim and frustrated them to the point where they attempted a point blank mashed ultra but I did a Yoga Tower over it and grabbed them for a Yoga Noogie. Yoga Tower is so good.

I remember starting my C to C quest. My expectations were high. "This will really help me become proficient with the rest of the cast", I thought to myself as I geared myself up for the slog ahead. If only I knew then what I know now.

The quest went on for months. Fight after fight, I slowly began to work out how to perform characters' specials and ultras. Learnt a few anti-airs, tried some combos. Each character gradually got to C and I moved onto the next, reading up on basic strategies during the day at work.

About halfway through I realised that I wasn't really learning anything massively useful and I was just slogging my way through to C thanks mostly to crap players probably also doing the same thing. As I moved to a new character, I would instantly forget what I'd learned about the previous one.

Finally, I reached the end, got the achievement and slunk back into playing as Dhalsim, forever destined to be embarrassed when an opponent goes for random select.

I much prefer Street Fighter in 1D.
