Ultra Street Fighter IV

I've been watching a lot of 3rd Strike courtesy of The Shend's wonderful YouTube offerings. He's just put some monster two and a half hour set of goodness which is worth watching for the first fifteen or so minutes alone. I don't see a lot of Q when I watch 3rd Strike but there's a parry-tastic beast of one included that was wicked to watch. It also gives the chance to hear his excellent music too, which I'd never heard before.

I've only seen an hour so far and will try to polish off the rest soon.

That's Kuroda, he's basically the king of 3S and a massive, loveable troll. He plays everyone to a very high level. There's a fair bit of sweet footage of YouTube of him including a great SBO match from years ago where he plays Q against Justin Wong's Chun and winds him right up that I love

I played humans at AE for the first time in months tonight and I got generally beasted and it was quite enjoyable. PSN is so sparse that when I was playing ranked waiting for Donut I tried to find some same skill matches and kept getting matched up with the number 4 Balrog, with predictable results.

That was not much fun. I am horrible with Cammy.

What's the general standard like on ranked thesedays? I'd like to try out a few new characters but I'm petrified of taking a roasting online so I lock myself away in trials like some kind of Street Fighting hermit.

I'm getting about 75% average players around my standard and the rest are pretty solid character specialists who kick my face off. My PP's pretty low from trying new mans though, so I'm probably getting people through same skill search (I always host).

Yeah, you still get lots of very beatable players in ranked. I think most of the properly, fiercely good players stick to endless these days. The standard in ranked is a fair bit higher than it used to be though; you get a lot less examples of players just wilding out dragon punches constantly for no reason. People seem to have at least a basic idea of what they should be doing. You'll still get the occasional press-all-the-buttons madman but less than the old days.

I think the most common type of player is a middling character specialist who's in a bit of a rut and hasn't quite realised it's because he's using the same once-winning tactics on everyone even though it doesn't always work. He probably sends rage messages as well.

People like me basically.

I played some lovely, lovely Strekken last night and didn't get a single rage message. Did they patch in a rage filter? Also I accidentally did a quick combo just like the old days :( I thought they were now disabled by default or something? Oh well, at least old stretchy pants didn't go all fizzy lifting drinks and float off into the sky like he used to.

I think it's only slot 1 that's disabled; the other one might still trigger. Not sure though. We should team up!

I occasionally try to force rage from people when I'm playing, especially with raw launchers. My new thing is doing a short block string, waiting a moment, then raw launcher; so many Street Fighter IV players are stuck in crouch-tech habits that they'll get caught with it more than a couple of times per match, haha.

I always play ranked via arcade mode with fight request on and seem to come across lots of quite good players but that's probably just in comparison to me. Usually I'll get some angry man who fights me over and over again until I either beat them or they get bored. I think they must be using custom match to find me over and over. There's this one guy who I have an interesting relationship with - I think his moderately high BP and PP are pretty much built out of beating me. It used to be that anytime he came on Live, if I was playing he'd zero in on me and dish out repeated kickings. I'm not going to tell you his gamertag cos he's probably rubbish and you'll all laugh at me. But anyway I actually prefer getting beaten to having an easy win so it's just as well I'm not good or I'd be bored.

Ggs last night to IgTerminals, Haggar and Donut and very briefly (and laggily) to JoePlustwo3.14. My lag cleared up later on which was amazing cos I was getting very sad about it. Nice to play you Ig, that's a serious Guile you got buddy - struggled to get in on him with Cody all night.

We should totally team up, Jiffles*. Anyone remember HutchUSA? He was on Strekken last night. He did a lovely Akuma combo which went air tatsu->double kicks->something->something->double kicks again. I messaged him complimenting on it because it looked wonderful and he replied saying the same combo was in vanilla SF4. I'll take his word for it.

* I'm leaving that typo in.

Is the gamertag JasonC something or other?

You still use Rufus in your team anyway, right? I can be your Rufus!

Hutch USA has an accent straight out of Coronation Street. At whichever SVB it was we went to (1998 it feels like) he took a convincing round of Daigo's Ryu as Seth with us all watching on. This was before Seth was a big deal so I was doubly impressed. Plus he seemed like a very nice man.

Cheers man, that really means a lot. Was a really nice lobby, had an awesome night. Coming up on 9 months of Guile usage now and just starting to get the hang of some of his stuff.

It's a long road, this fighting game malarky, huh?

I'm about for good few hours in about 45mins - 1 hour, if anyone up for some daytime SF?

GGs! And yes, that's a pretty good Guile. I would suggest not relying on hard kick sweep so much, unless you've hit confirmed it on a jump in - it's very easy to punish and mk sweep is much better for the job as a poke. Last night I also did wakeup Super > Ultra with Makoto to counter Mr Terminals' Ultra 2 chip attempt. The screen went all vaseline-y and it was highly dramatic. For me at least. Also, Jiro fucked me up in record time with Blanka.

Oh and also, I went to the music folder and saw that Alley-Stare made a thread about the new MBV album. Yasss! I knew it was coming, but managed to miss the big day. I am listening to it now and I expect I'll be listening to it for the rest of the day.

Yeah, that was outrageous. If we'd been mic'ed you would've heard me squealing my incredulous appreciation.

Quietly.

'Cos my Girlfriend was in bed.

I played some Endless in a lobby with randoms before fighting you lot to test my connection. Had a few matches against this one guy who was pretty solid. After getting fed up having my Cody beaten I Blanka-ed up to take a win, only for him to switch to Blanka for the next match and totally school me without resorting to any gimmicks, just a nice solid Blanka. I hate that. My Blanka is so bad.

My Blanka is so bad...

...when I charge down, up + kick I get Balls-up.

Haha, I've done this before...And like you I was just mashing ultra on wakeup and got super instead.

It was amazing because they guy DP'ed as I got up and we both got to see his slo mo DP go through me as I powered up. I ultra'ed as he landed

From this point I've always thought of this as a viable wake chip escape but I have NEVER had the chance to do it again

Vids plx!
