EVO 8th Game update:

http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/13/evo-2013-donation-drive-standings-and-rule-update/

I have to admit I'm incredibly amused and pleased about this, but for conflicting reasons. I actually read the original piss-take Fighting is Magic thread on 4chanarchive in my darker days, and it was hilarious because I was only vaguely aware of the cartoon. Then I watched some of the cartoon and liked it in that Adventure Time manchild way and found the internet love for it deliciously ironic. Then as I started to take being a socialist seriously again I realised the cartoon was actually amazing from a feminist perspective, and then recoiled at the swelling "brony" (OH GOD) movement, and then rejoiced again when I saw that the fictional 4chan game was now REAL, and it's like everything I've been digging on for the past couple of years is flowing together and oh god help my synapses are shutting down

Wasn't there a recent surge in support for Skull Girls? I'd be rather happy to see it featured; Smash Bros doesn't need the exposure since it's the best selling fighting game of all time, probably, and Skull Girls deserves the support for the important steps it made in the right direction with its helpful tutorials. If it's not something "Mike Z" and co are able to expand upon then I'd at least like it to serve as an example to other developers in the genre. I only played it twice, obviously.

Also, I absolutely LOVE adventure time. It warms my heart.

The single player mode in a fighting game should probably be a series of missions focusing on particular aspects of the game's mechanics and also have you use every character. If they had missions like an EX Machinegun Blow obsessed Dudley who only takes damage when you block and punish and a little blurb telling you that the move isn't safe then it would probably help people get over a lot of frustrations when they get around to playing online.

Also, I played some more Dan in ranked last night, dragging myself back from 4300BP B of shame to a more respectable <4700BP. I'm yet to properly learn the spacing for his backthrow into crossup HK setup (which is safe against a lot of wakeup options it seems) but I really should as it might make a difference in matches against more experienced players.

I taunted far, far more than usual last night; landing two FADC crouching taunts in one round, and all the messages I got back were brilliantly positive. It was a good time. There's a lot of Cammy players online. Even basic but persistant Cammy pressure totally destroys me. I don't know why I can't just crouchblock unless I consciously remind myself to do it. Should I, when she inevitably goes for more dive kick nonsense, just stick out some standing jabs? Or Dan's crouching medium punch? I don't want to risk an uppercut without the meter to back it up.

Talking of absolute frauds, I watched Imp vs Haggar and Haggs did a lovely frame-trap counterhit close standing medium punch into probably-max-range cr.mp x sprial arrow. Good man.

Also, a late response imp, but I am well aware you main Adon. Sneer.jpg

I watched Kramer vs Kramer last night. Kramer fought well but Mrs Kramer abused the overpowered comeback mechanic.

Also, I would have liked to have seen Guilty Gear featured. What's the chances of a sequel? I enjoyed what little I played of Accent Core on XBLA, its release just coincided with me moving house and I kinda lose the will to play fighting games if it's not against another human. Venom is just excellent.

The main thing I'd like to change about how I play fighting games is more patience with Training Mode. I just can't last long in there. I've never bothered with plinking either; I ought to learn that, and tighten up my excecution when facing right; them EX uppercuts were supposed to be Ultras.

Yes, I think I land that frame trap about once every ten games. Usually since I'm so awful at confirming it I just end up doing the spiral arrow on hit or block. I'm sure that if I played at earlier than 11pm and not when really tired I might have slightly better reactions, though. I neeeearly got Ali* with her cr.hp into ultra counterhit setup at the weekend, but I dropped the link :(

I wilded about with fei long a bit more last night. I simply CANNOT do rekkas in a match. I don't know why. Someone tell me why.

I also tried evivl ryu against doughnut for a bit, but I don't think he's for me. Maybe dan will be the next shoto I learn a bit more of.

Dan is excellent. I haven't really got a reel feel for timings on cross up lk.knee but I killed a relatively high BP Abel player with it last night and it was satisfying watching them rainbow over dan's head in a slow motion KO. I also beat a 15000+BP Oni by throwing them out if their cross up slashes about six times. I wonder how many of his BP are made up of cross up slashes?

That said, I did still lose to several Oni players who used nothing other than ex slash into ultra. I should just sit at midscreen crouch-teching. :( I lost to pretty much every Cammy as well. And I almost beat a Chun Li by not allowing her to build meter, but eventually she did and I died.

I think it's time for me to pick a new main also.

I was going to photoshop this, but don't have the skills or time... so here's a written description:

Imagine if you will, a parody of Amy Winehouse's 'Back to black' album cover.

Amy-Winehouse-Back-To-Black-2006-300x300.jpg

Amy's head has been expertly replaced with that of the famous Street-Fighting Brazilian man-beast. Her skin has taken on a greenish tint and her tiny frame is outlined with a coruscating glow of electricity. The text "Amy Winehouse" has been replaced with the words "Standing Roundhouse" and instead of "Back to Black" it reads "Back to Blanka".

I dropped him out of politeness cos he just annoys everyone, but I love him.

I've had a bit more practice at the old blanka/cammy matchup recently, and I think I'm finally starting to understand it a bit better. You can't really divekick vortex him very well because he's a prick . But meaty pressure means he can't do much without ex. Also it stops them from wilding on electricity too much, which can get irritating. Also being able to punish blocked balls really easily is quite nice.

Cammy murders Blanka so badly. It's listed as 6-4 in most places but tends to look worse than that when it's played out. He is useless against her meaty pressure, she can punish his escapes with ease and standing fierce beats EX rainbow roll so perfectly it looks like it was designed for the purpose. Horrid.

In other news, I had a gastroscopy today. It wasn't fun, but having valium injected straight into the blood stream is quite a lot of fun. Quite a lot.

Oh! Jason! I had a gastroscopy last year too! It was dreadful! I don't think my throat was as numb as it could be and I spent basically the entire 15 minutes gagging and vomiting. I had a thoroughly unpleasant time and frankly would not recommend it to anyone. I also feel a lot more empathy for actresses in some of the more extreme pornography which I occasionally peruse.

Also, earlier in the year, I had to drink loads of barium so that someone could x-ray image my guts. It turns out that ingesting what is basically about 300 grams of rock plays merry hell with your guts for a day or two, as well.

Now that The Shend is lurking in the thread I will say that I realised the other day that my proudest Street Fighter moment to date was landing the 6x crouching fierce juggle as Necro against his Hugo online. Partly because I rarely manage to do it at all even in training, but mostly because I was so fiercely determined to impress him.

For the bored or work-averse, here's a nice-looking and very long guide to playing fighting games that seems quite nice from the bits I just skimmed: http://insertcredit.com/2013/01/14/the-educated-gentlepersons-fighting-game-primer/

The recommended reading bit at the end alerted me to Seth Killian's Domination 101 series of SRK forum posts from like 2003, that also seem quite cool: http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?forums/domination-101.98/
