Ultra Street Fighter IV

I'm not sure I can bear to watch my replay back with dear Joffo, I know I was bloody terrible and it really was just a bunch of matches of me being wonderfully styled on. That said, it might be worth running a sweepstake (arf!) on how many times I press the sweep button throughout the set. I'm going with 40+ easily.

Went to see Life of Pi yesterday. It was pretty good.

Cheers! I've got some CEX credit to use up so I might see if I can get a copy and a fightpad. :)

EDIT: Still confused, despite the explanation. Can I get SSFIV if they don't have the Arcade edition and still play online? Do I have to buy the DLC?

You're better off just getting Arcade Edition if you're planning to play online. SSFIV will work on its own, but there aren't many people playing it now. AE DLC is 1200 MSP.

You can still play online; when your turn comes around in a lobby the game will revert to Super, preventing your opponent from choosing the 4 DLC characters (and making Makoto rubbish again).

But yes, the arcade edition disc from Play.com is about the price of the DLC on it's own. CEX have Super for 5quid, but Arcade Edition for 12. I'd go for that if you see it, but probably wouldn't bother with just Super since most people have moved on.

Nicely done cale.

WahWah, yes, if you just buy the Super Streetfighter IV disc you'll need to buy the Arcade Edition DLC, then v.2012 is a free update on top of that.

You can play online with just Super, but as Joffo says, you'll be two versions behind everyone else, so you'll be missing four characters and a whole host of improvements/tweaks that have been made to the rest of the cast.

Lovely matches a couple of pages back, good stuff, guys. The JLM-Joffo set was especially lovely as Dan and Chun Li are my two main-mains, mayne. It was nice seeing them being used so excellently; I am surely going to steal that absurd waste of meter Chun combo at the end of the last round.

I feel bad that I've not helped with the replays so far, if anyone's around tomorrow night I can share the me vs Nate match. Also for fights. I've just given upwards of 200 quid to Bloomsbury Lanes to book my birthday party so I'm counting on you all to be in lobbies while I stay at home and count pennies into a jar. Overdraft fighter.

Yes, incredible games there, I was actually shaking after it because I was so terrified throughout the set. I know it's a win for Chun and she is capable of keeping him out all day, but I also know that I'll get massively out-damaged for every mistake I make so it's still scary as hell. Plus you play Hawk correctly, as a footsies based tank with a whole lot of health to play with, occasionally switching up to all out mauling mode when the opportunity arises. When you have that much life and that much damage output but limited ways in, you have to realise that you have a whole 99 seconds to play with, and I think Hawk takes even more patience than Gief to play effectively. I feel confident against grappler players who are frustrated and impatient because I can snipe them all day with standing roundhouse and pick them apart, but against zen grapplers like yourself the nerves start to set in, and when grapplers don't kill themselves it takes quite a while for Chun to whittle away all that life.

I really struggled with the ground game against you even with Chun, which is why I had to switch up half way through and start doing a lot more neutral jump roundhouse and air throw. I'm scared to use grounded anti-airs because of the dive/normal/empty jump mix up, and it's a worthwhile risk for you to throw out the occasional errant dive as long as I don't have ultra because I'm not going to dish out massive punishment for it. Counter hit EX dive hurts like hell as well. I tried to avoid looking at my life bar at times during the match because losing big chunks was getting me flustered. I liked the adaptation to the neutral jump roundhouse where you started anti-airing it with standing roundhouse. I got a little bit hype the first time I landed on one of those. I don't mind getting hit by good Streetfighter.

That said, I was cursing your name every time I got hit by the odd dirty gimmick, partly because I felt stupid and partly because they tended to do 40-50% damage. Max distance EX dive into Ultra is one of those infuriating deer in the headlights moments. Should... do... something... can... only... seem... to walk... backwards. Shit.

Anyway, yes, well played, that was unbelievably tense, utterly exhausting games, and the next one would no doubt have taken it to 5-5, such was the reading and counter-reading on display. Maybe next tournament we should have the Singapore Esports Badminton/Tennis style win by two clear games rule in effect.

Also GGs to Donut. I am glad to see you're doing the upkicks combo ender with Yun now. More damage and a knockdown just by changing one button at the end of your combo, plus you already have some of those filthy post-knockdown set ups and you get more opportunities to land them this way. I approve of this.

Guys, I know I've been really on topic of late, but I've been really impressed by this beautiful episodic indie point and click adventure called Kentucky Route Zero.

I just finished playing through the first episode and enjoyed it a surprising amount! I think it might be the kind of thing you need to get in the mood for though. Turn down the lights, don't rush, and just soak it all in. And then get confused by the very abrupt ending.

In all seriousness, though, I think the next thing we should do is all agree an evening we're free and do a FT1 tournament over the course of a couple of hours.

Right then I'm going to ask a very straight forward and yet moony question so bear ( :) ) with me. Since my execution has actually improved recently and I'm feeling a bit more confident with the stick, can you nice folks give me some advice on how to FADC.

I went into training last night but I failed miserably. Not that I want to try any expert/JLM combos I just want to get something simple going.

Fireball -> FADC - > Normal/Special is probably the easiest way to practise it.

With Ryu try crouching MP - > Fireball - > FADC - > Sweep

For this you'll do:

Cr. MP - > Quarter circle forward and Punch - > MK + MP - > Immediately tap forwards once more - > Sweep.

You don't need to input the full dash in this instance, because the forward part of your fireball motion counts as the first part of your dash as long as you do it quickly enough.

With Dan you can do close standing MP - > Gadouken - > FADC - > Close standing MP - > Dan kicks if you'd rather practise a Dan example.

With Dan it's also worth learning how to uppercut FADC both forwards and backwards so you can be safe on block/juggle with ultra 2. For these you want to input the uppercut, then press and hold MP + MK and then input a dash as quickly as you can. You have to input the MP + MK quite early, as once the uppercut becomes airborne it can't be cancelled any more, but when you practise looking out for it you usually have time to see if it hit or was blocked. If you let go of MP + MK too early then the attacking bit of the focus will happen and you won't immediately be able to dash out of it.

Fuerte only has very limited uses for FADC because he uses Run - > Stop to serve a similar function without using meter. The only time you're likely to use it with Fuerte is if you throw out a hopefull Quesadilla Bomb and want to bail out of it if it's blocked.

I also found it really helpful to just wantonly FADC all the time in real matches just to get the hang of doing it on demand, rather than once every so often when I had an FADC -> Ultra opportunity or whatever and the pressure feels a bit greater. Go nuts with it until it becomes second nature.

Yeah definitely do that too. It's fun to do anyway. I love burning all four bars of meter with Oni just to create a massive pressure string that ends in the opponent successfully tech-ing my throw. It's pretty efficient.
