Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Just had 30 or so wonderful lag free games against Pugz83, who has around 2900PP and a very solid Ryu. I ended up doing little bursts of some of my current strongest characters, so five games with Akuma, five with Dee Jay, five with Gief, five with Rose, five with Gouken and five with Sakura. Didn't use Dudley or Chun, which in hindsight may have been a mistake if we have a tournament coming up and I have limited practise time.

What was good about it, and an indication that he's a smart player who's trying to learn, is that I'd win the first game almost every time I changed character, then he'd adapt and we'd go back and forth for a few once he got a feel for what was going on. I also think you need a few straight games of Zangief vs. Ryu before it turns into a really good match. I lost the first game just watching what he did and eating damage and letting him jump out of everything, then in game two I landed TK Blizzaaaahd at the end of both rounds, game three I used that to get away with loads of meaty SPDs, then games four and five were the real matches of substance where all of that stuff was in play and it became readfighter.

You should all play Pugz if you see him online guys, he's got really good fundamentals and crispy linky combos to punish your mistakes, but more importantly he sends very nice friendly messages and is a total gent. Also he sent a message asking for pointers (even though the set ended up about even in wins, I think he was impressed that I could fight him with so many different characters) and stressed that he's just keen to practise and get better, which is nice to hear. All too often in endless battle I'll play someone and beat them the first game, then they'll win game two and abruptly leave. I don't think that's really what endless battle is designed for.

Anyway, that's the second time in a row I've played a long set against a stranger in endless battle and ended up exchanging pleasant messages and friend requests afterwards. Lovely stuff.

Feels good man.

Additional also, I forgot to upload this a while back. Nothing spectacular in it, but this was a pleasingly clean Dudley round I recorded a while ago. What I like about it is that I made him uppercut loads in the first round, then you can see me in round 2 making it obvious I'm still looking for them, then when I'm convinced he's got it out of his system I start to take liberties on his wake up and Dudley-based fun is had:

Imp vs Alistarr

Oh man, I don't think my heart rate's gone back to normal since the last time I played Imp in tournament. Harsh draw.

I'm tempted to do a fantasy bracket prediction on Challonge.

All matches FT5. In the unlikely event of a draw (score at 2-2, fifth match goes to the final round and is a double KO) participants to choose between FT2 RoseBall or Dan-off

FT5 means best of 9, not best of 5, so it would be the ninth match going to a final round which ends in a double KO. If it happens it will be the hypest.

I made top 16!

Can we change characters if we lose a match or is it locked from the get go? Can the winner change ultra? Can the loser change ultra? Can the winner change ultra if the loser changes ultra? Are we making Jason the final boss?

Cale vs Joffles is my favourite first round draw. Also I am scared of Sith and you all should be too. Also imp's Adon is good, and Adon suits imp's brand of turtling mixed with solid play mixed with do it anyway club mixed with evil troll factor to perfection. I think you were doing us all a favour by resisting it for this long. Also also, I don't think I've played AndyGT or even seen him play, so how he'll fare against Qazzleroy is a mystery to me.

Additional to those alsos: There are people who did not enter this tournament who should be in it. The finger of shame is pointed at all of you.

Addendum to the additional to those alsos: When do I get to play Revival at this game? It has been literally years.

You can change character if you lost the previous game, and the winner can change ultras in response to any change the loser makes. In the first game against each opponent you can pick whatever character you want. Except Oni who is banned.

The final boss depends on how many first hits and ultra combo finishes you get.

Balrog is considered one of Adon's few bad match ups, so you're better equipped than most Donut.

Alternatively, insist on playing your match against imp in Vanilla SFIV. Not only will Adon be unselectable, but you'll have Yoga Sniper back for Seth. Win freakin' win. Until Imp picks Sagat. Then you'll lose. I haven't thought this through.

I posted something along those lines but quickly deleted it because I thought there were some kind of mindgames going on. 5 out of 9 then :P

Nice ending. I had the top Dudley guy on the my follow for a while because I like watching Dudley and he had the same trick but instead of waiting he did

Focus crumple, dash away, LP uppercut, LK, cross under

It was nice because it builds a little meter and looks like you've made an input error, which can throw your opponent off.

GGs Plopribald. Apologies about the disconnects and thank you for your patience. I switched wireless networking off to get the connection to myself, which worked for the first four games and then my housemates started resetting the router because they don't know why it's booted them off.

No worries, sorry for the slight delay at the start, I just had to go and see how one of my daughters was as they have been very poorly of late.

I think I should had had a few more games with Chun as I find it easier to turtle with her :) and apologies for the mashed out ultras :)

They may be the first dirty ultras of this tournament, but they won't be the last as long as Alistarr is in the bracket.

Yeah, there are some nice variants on it I've picked up since then. The classic one is Marn's where you jump over them into the corner, then do cr. lk and duck back out again to land back where you started. You can also do a slightly delayed standing roundhouse for extra damage, and then the timing/strength of duck used determines which side you end up on. Dudley is great. I wish he were better in this game, but there's so little you can do for him because he is such a fundamentally Third Strike-y character by design and this game doesn't have parries.

The best Dudleys to watch in my opinion are Kuroken, HJMXP, MMS Smug and Mr Kimokoan, who is easily my favourite. PJS Liquid is great for pure combo exhibition madness too. Oh, and the UK's BTM Isam (formerly Unstoppable DJ) is outstanding as well and should get to more tournaments.

Sterling work, gents, especially Jason's router unblockable. I've updated the bracket.

JLM faces the winner of AndyGT v Qazimod; the loser meets Plopboy. Sith and I have a playdate tomorrow night.

I probably shouldn't call it a playdate.

Oh, and youtube titling. How's about:

RWBO12 Top 16: Plopboy vs JLM

I don't think we need characters in brackets, really, but will roll with the consensus.

Also I am now wishing we did a vanilla tournament.
