Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Yas, have I recommended 2666 by Roberto Bolaño before? Because if not then that's my recommendation today. It's pretty remarkable.

Who had the better assist though? :P

Biden Missiles of course. It might as well be the only assist in the game.

Aww, I love RAW. He was, as the youth say, a fucking dude. I've lost count of the amount of copies of his books I've bought and lent out, never to be seen again.

In completely off topic news, I really want to play some man fighting games but stupid life keeps getting in the way. I'm going to have to start from scratch, aren't I? :-(

Edit: Mental formatting. This Nexus is RUBBISH. Except for being ace.

I really need to do some of that magic port-channel-techy stuff with my Xbox because it's crap not being able to lobby. Apologies to Haggs and Goemon.

Ranked was torrid. Played a handful of A+ mans, and one of them ran it back after winning, the cheap sod. I took solace in playing the Rose-Ryu matchup extremely correctly and getting three wins from it.

I really want to make a matchup guide for hobbyists like me. Combo guides, BnBs and frame data etc are all well and good, but it'd be nice to have something that says "don't do X when Y has meter" or "bad Z players abuse tick throws" that you can have by the sofa and quickly flick to while you pretend to choose an Ultra.

Oh god that looks huge and daunting and divisive and therefore interesting. You have led me in wise literary directions before so I will make an attempt at it.

It's not so daunting if you think of it as three or four separate novels, which was how he originally wanted to publish it (which would have been mental because (a) one of them is a bit gruelling and I might even recommend kind of half-reading, half-skipping your way through it like I did*, and (b) it's not actually three or four separate novels, it's one novel). But the prose is nice and elegant and not at all hard to follow and the piece as a whole is exquisite. Plus if you're e-reading you don't have to worry about how heavy it is! Hope you enjoy it if you do get it.

*you'll know which part by the time you get about ten pages into it. The point of it is about repetition, but you can get the point without actually reading all the varied repetitions, if you know what I mean.

always block crossup when donuts oni has you knocked down.

after my bipson gets a scissors knockdown, I'll try to crossup psycho, but will often get it wrong.

alistarr will try to use gen U1 to go through fireballs, so throw lots of fireballs.

also had a nice long set with geomon and a random last night. I hadn't realised how terrifying a yun who keeps neutral jumping just outside of footsie range is.

Don't play JLM if he has access to a connected controller.

When beating Nate, don't try to combo into a post-match handshake. It whiffs every time.

When playing against Camel, pretend not to notice that he is just mashing random buttons.

Yea, that was great fun! I had no idea Cammy can be such a good zoner, you were doing it spot on against my Zangief!

Did you know the other guy in the room? He was quite unlucky a few times and the only time he got real close he dropped mid fight!

Never met the guy. He had a decent range of characters though, which kept things refreshing.

Cammy basically has to play super-lame against gief. Her st.hk beats all his buttons basically, so she has to rely on that since she can't vortex him for obvious reasons. There's a video somewhere of alioune playing worstgiefever and winning like 15 straight matches using basically st.hk and uppercut. Dull but effective. Matchup plays basically the same vs hawk.

Lots of lovely lag-free fighter this morning against some Spanish folks, with the longest set coming against PAPIOL, who is a fellow just-over-3,000PP-er. He has a good Cody, though he makes the common Cody player mistake of not going for enough throws. Most decent players will get a lot less button-happy after eating a couple of absurdly damaging Cody counter hit combos, and you have to sense that as a Cody player and adapt to the opponent's tendencies. It really kills his effectiveness if you don't. Still pretty pleased with the blocking though; it still takes a lot of concentration for me not to get fidgety when defending. Here is me not getting counter hit and then doing a fun Juri combo:

cr. MK - > Fuhajin - > cr. MK - > pinwheel - > FADC - > standing MP - > EX pinwheel.

That close standing MP buff they gave Juri makes her extended FADC combos so much more practical than they used to be. More people should play Juri.

That excellent thing happened last night where I played a load of games against people who know what they're doing (geomon mostly) and then went on ranked for a bit before bed. And ended up against an utter lunatic Ken player who just wilded about the place with a mixture of air tatsu, regular tatsu and uppercut. And I was in the mindset of trying to frametrap and apply wakeup pressure, Matches like that are the most annoying thing. I've totally forgotten how to play against bad players.

Nice combo-ing, Jellum. Juri is one character who is still completely alien to me. I should learn her and do wildly unsafe stuff just so I can learn how to beat her. Also, Jellum, that local leeds 'scene' you mentioned; you go to it now and fight them, right? You should. I'd like to hear all about it.

I am movin' hoose the noo, so I'm offline and playing other games instead. I managed to buy Toe Jam and Earl just before I unplugged, though. Yas.

EDIT: Also, I just went to xbox.com and have a message from "LIVE" time stamped as yesterday at 6pm which simply tells me I can view the message from my xbox 360. Is that a mailing everyone got telling them to buy Halo 4, or are they genuinely worried I'm ill due to the lack of hadoukens?

Despite the fact that I'm a bit rubbish in comparison, that's one of the reasons I decided to pick her up; the diversity of the moves seemed quite unique and I didn't know how I would be able to make the most of them in certain situations, but I thought that there was untapped potential in there. I still feel a bit dirty using a dive kick character as my main, but it's so much fun when you can anticipate the best moments to get in with some damaging stuff. I also feel a bit dirty using a projectile character, but again you have all the angles and delayed shots and whatever. So much potential.

Juri

I don't think she counts as a dive kick character to be honest. Sure, she can mess with her jump arc and it's unique in that it breaks focus but it's so, so unsafe on block unless you space it perfectly.

I loved her for a while in Super until people figured out that she has basically nothing on wakeup except for EX Pinwheel, then I moved on. She can do some lovely stuff these days but when she pops up in random select it doesn't go so well.

I may actually genuinely really play this tonight. Missus has some things to be getting on with and Assassin's Creed is pretty much killing me - I'm only pressing on out of loyalty to a series I love but my patience is wearing thin.

Aye, Juri's not a real dive kick character. I think she's totally fair and balanced in all aspects, which may well be why she's not popular.

WeirdoNeo's probably the best North American Juri player. JroJro and Ai Ai Tomo are the most spectacular Japanese Juris. I'd have thought she'd be more popular in Japan, particularly as there are more Sagats over there and she gives him such a horrible time.

Floe does need to just play Sagat.

Is anyone fighting?
