Ultra Street Fighter IV

I've been playing 3rd Strike whenever I've got two minutes. It's only arcade mode because I'm absolutely not going to play ranked on account of being rubbish. It's a lot of fun. I like how the Gill AI takes pity on you after your 20th continue.

hot damn. Grand finals is probably the set of the year for me.

Reynolds cammy just utterly went to town all over tokido for like 3 games straight. I've never seen play like it, let alone tokido look so incredibly free. Wild. So awesome to watch. tokido just didn't have an answer. And he lost to a pad player. a pad player! Wodners will never cease

Yes, that was incredible. Most hype I've been since Dieminion vs Uryo at Evo. All you archive monsters should get it done, I saw from top 5-ish onwards and it was all excellent.

There's some Toronto tourney this weekend too, with Justin, Dieminion and others attending. And the LA 25th anniversary qualifier next weekend. Fighting games!

So great that a Brazilian player won it, amazingly hype.

That said, it won't be long before I'm bored of seeing Cammy in grand finals. It's great to get a break from Viper/Rufus/Seth but she is a dive kick/vortex character herself and it will get old. It's a bit of a shame that the dominant strategy in this game is to pick a character who a) has an amazing vortex and b) is near impossible to anti-air and therefore doesn't have to play Streetfighter to get in. Even Akuma usually has to get that first knockdown somewhat "honestly", Cammy not so much. You still need great reads, consistent execution and plenty of other qualities to win a tournament with her, so I'm not trying to discredit Cammy players or this guy's achievment in beating one of the best Akumas in the world. It's just that I find the characters who can jump in for free dumb the game down a bit because they remove footsies almost entirely and that makes me sad. I still feel like Daigo winning Evo with Ryu took a much more complete display of skill than anything from Wolfkrone's Viper or the EG Rufii, for example. Those three are all great players, but these characters all have shortcuts that they use to sidestep Streetfighter and I always feel a bit short changed when I see Alex Valle or Dieminion lose to nonsense when they weren't always necessarily outplayed.

What I loved about Kazunoko when he played AE Yun and destroyed everyone was that he admitted as much. He said he wasn't good at Streetfighter so he picked a character who didn't have to play it. K Brad, on the other hand, insists that Cammy is not cheap and that people need to put more work in, and that Infiltration has "terrible defense", and the American players will claim that they've "closed the gap" on the Japanese players, but I don't think the tournament results tell the whole story at all.

On the plus side, I'm hoping the consensus will be that Cammy is top 5 soon and that James Chen has to admit it on stream. Also, the great thing about this game's super diverse roster and generally strong balance is that there's still a place for Snake Eyes, Dieminion, Valle, PR Rog and the like to make top 8 if they're in form, so there's generally something for everyone.

Wow, bit of a downer there. I should add that I still love watching the bullshit characters do their thing and bedazzle me with insane rushdown/mix ups/combos etc. and I'm certainly not after an all Ryu top 8 at every tournament, I just get a bit sad when great players lose to silly stuff and when silly stuff consistently overcomes smart stuff. Stuff.

i don't disagree, but that match was about so much more than vortex vs vortex, and in any case this is a vortex game and I'd rather see a newish vortex character win than one we've all seen a thousand times.

I thought it was a remarkable match, one given extra weight given that Tokido had strolled his way through the entire weekend and this was being played for national pride as much as anything else.

Anyway, Combofiend is just the best. Line of the weekend came after FS' Makoto dominated a round: 'Now we know what the FS stands for. Feeling Self'. Marvellous.

After watching k-brad win with cammy I started having a mess around with her! She is A freakin animal! I've never had so many dizzys!

Ultimately what I always push back against is the mentality of 'anything to win'. People treat the game as a perfect, when really it isn't. There are limitations and while the team will try to balance they will never be able to make it perfect and people will find things that could be considered 'breaking'

Option selects for example...how is that NOT cheating? You're using a bug in the system to up you chances of winning.

I love the game but I always have to look at it from an objective point of view.

I hope the potential surge in Cammy players means that I will learn a lot of Anti-Cammy tech now. I simply cannot deal with her. Also yes; it was almost immediately apparent in 2012, and maybe even in AE, that she was a total beast because of her wild, easy, strong links. Imagine she had instant air cannon strike as well?

The combo system was originally a bug, apparently

Street Fighter II differs from its predecessor due to the selection of multiple playable characters, each with distinct fighting styles and special moves. An unintentional bug in the game's code enabled the player to "cancel" during the animation of some moves by performing another move, allowing for a combination of several basic and special moves. This "combo" system was later adopted as a standard feature of fighting games, and was expanded upon in subsequent Street Fighter installments.

I tempted to try a bit of Rose, as like Joeplus I have some Gypsy blood running through my viens which obviously means I will be awesome with her straight off the bat.

Anyway Cammy is a

I'm also not sure I like the current Roy love in, that Elf glitch is very mean and makes me sad. Poor cooking man.

Oh I agree, it was an excellent set, it was more a general observation than a complaint about that amazing grand finals, and I love that

the local hero pulled out the win against the obvious favourite from Japan, particularly as he'd already nabbed one of the Brazilian qualifying spots. Players defending their home turf as underdogs is always great, and the San Francisco tournament is only going to be more hype if the international qualifiers actually bring in players from a good spread of countries.

And yes, Combofiend is of course the best.

Toronto tournament spoiler:

Cammy wins!. Chi-Rithy is ridiculously good of course, but that is three in a row for Cammy now. What a beast.

Oooooh. Ta. Will check out ce soir.

Are you in Mexico? Is it good? When are you back? Can you bring me back something delicious?

Yes, totally, Sunday, I will get you some tat from the airport.

Apologies for reneging on my promise of photos of food but everywhere we eat is either in shade or really low lighting so none of it looks that good. I've eaten some fine things, mind.

Cammy. Yes I think cammy's a bit unfair, almost. Because she can utterly screw you over no matter what you do. If you sit there and block, then she can back throw you, which leads to all manner of unblockables/divekick vortex, which is safe against basically everyone bar dee jay and blanka (and U2 hakan). Or, if you press buttons, she's got loads of relatively easy counterhit setups, which lead into hk spiral arrow, from which you can get unblockables/dive kick vortex/whatever, whether you quick rise or not, all of which is safe against everyone bar the above. Combined with her outrageous damage and stun which gives her almost a kill from one combo and a mixup. Her character specific situation optimal combos do obscene damage, like, more than Honda. IAnd ex divekick is probably one of the top 2 or 3 moves in the game, because why not. I like her.

In case anyone wants to read more, I've done extensive felching on SRK and have put together a bit of a cammy guide. When I say a bit, I mean 10k words+, but it's still only like half done.
