Ultra Street Fighter IV

Things that were good about THIS WEEKEND!!:

Seeing Richie Hawtin play and getting very little sleep.

Sitting around on Saturday morning and playing Street Fighter.

JLM's internet being so bad that he just couldn't take it any more.

JLM deciding to get a train to Manchester to play Street Fighter with me in person.

Losing a lot of lag-free games of Street Fighter and getting hit by new shenanigans.

The kitten biting JLM's elbow to stop him comboing me to death and gifting me a game.

Playing 50 glorious games of lag-free Marvel.

Sleeping the deep sleep of the righteous.

Playing 50 more glorious games of lag-free Marvel.

Playing Street Fighter: The Movie (the game of the movie of the game).

The genuinely amazing intro voice and music on Justice League Task Force. Seriously.

JLM landing the Superman infinite, then not being able to do it again because the game is literally broken and the specials stopped working.

Going undefeated on BRUTAL: Paws of Fury, officially the best fighting game. My Tai Cheetah is gdlk.

A bunch of other fighting games that aren't as good as those named above (3SOE, SSF2THDR, XMvSF, plus various truly terrible games).

More sleep. Man I am still tired.

We might still be doing it again on November 3rd if anyone is sufficiently jealous to want to make the trip.

Guys.

BT are going to deliver my router tomorrow. Then, after what will probably be several hours of swearing as I try to remember how to configure my impossibly cheap and badly designed wireless hub to get it to talk to my new router, I might be able to get my xbox online to play some childrens street fighter.

I can currently connect my xbox through my laptop, using a nearby BTwifi connection. I tried a single match of this the other week and the level of lag was not as comical as you'd expect, actually. It's good to know that such an ridiculously convoluted thing even works, but it's farm from useful.

Yes, impromptu offline fighter at casa de Alistarr was an excellent thing for the reasons Alistarr mentioned. Alistarr's kitten could cost me Evo grand finals and I couldn't stay mad at him. The timing was impeccable though. I was landing the match winning combo, then the kitten sat on my lap and I was overwhelmed by adorable, then he bit my elbow, and by the time I recovered and looked back at the screen my character was dizzied and eating the match losing combo. Cat switch is the new lag switch.

100 games of lag-free Marvel was glorious, and it is very sad that you can't save replays on that game because there were some very hype games in there. Marvel is great. I used to think it was crazy when FChamp talked about grinding out first to 100 sets in the FGTV house, but I can see how easy that is when you have another Marvel player to hand. The games just fly by, and it could easily have been 100 more if there weren't plenty of other games to try and fit in.

Justice Leage Task Force is more broken than I had ever imagined. The review I saw covered plenty of bugs and issues and we still discovered more within five minutes of starting it up. What an absolute mess of a game. No hit stun, no block stun, therefore no block strings and no pressure. There are throws in the game, but throws are there to beat blocking and there's no need to be caught blocking due to the aforementioned lack of block stun. There are also no overheads, including jumping attacks. Everything can be blocked by holding down back, so optimum strategy is to hold down-back and mash a quick normal. Like SF4 M. Bison.

Special moves stop working seemingly at random, but when they do they can lead to magic like the aforementioned Superman infinite. Full screen move that knocks down and then OTG's into another knockdown until dead. Superman has to be broken though doesn't he? Also Batman's sliding sweep move, where if player 1 does it the move tracks the opponent, changing direction as many times as is necessary to make sure they land on it if they try to jump over. If player 2 does it then it doesn't track at all and can be jumped easily. Tremendous.

Also, everybody do the T. Hawk swastika!

I challenge anyone to beat Alistarr's Tai Cheetah at next year's Hegg Fest. I managed one round in ten matches and I tried every character in the cast. Beastly.

Many thanks to Alistarr for the hospitality and tasty vegan pizza. Definitely up for Novemberfighter, for 100 more games of Marvel, more adorable kitten and another exciting opportunity to ride the tram. I'm on a train but I'm on the road. Sorcery.

Shoutouts to squeaky bums @ 5:33.

GGs to Jellag'em last night. It wasn't as bad as it has been lately. I also think my connection isn't that great too - I think I need to phone up BT and tell them to stop sharing this connection over that BT Fon thing.

Oh, and look - I have a fan/stalker!

Exciting. Or Scary. Not sure.

Just tested mine. 16 down and 0.9 up. BE are amazing, we're not even on their most expensive package.

I'll be up for games this week (when I'm not playing Fez <3). Feel like I'm making progress with Rose, getting some solid win streaks going. Almost made it to 1000PP yesterday, only to lose on the final round and last pixel of health against a Bison.

Still not good enough to elicit rage mail, although I did get this:

Very kind of them, it really wasn't.

Oh my goodness. Nearly a full half hour of jaw-dropping Gouken trickery. I keep saying that everyone should play Gouken because of all the fun I have using him and going for these insane resets and gimmicks he has, and this man seems to know and use all of them as well as plenty he looks to have invented himself. He's doing stuff I've never even seen from Desora, Bullcat, ProudStrawberry etc. and I ended up rewinding almost every clip to watch it again.

To the lab!

Well I had some lovely lag-free games vs donut, and some laggy ones vs jellum, but that was his fault. I'd like to try with people who i've had trouble connecting with at some point, but at least I can get games against the usual crowd. I've hardly played in the last 3 weeks, so was a bit rusty tonight, but not as bad as I could have been which was nice. The wildest thing happened in a cammy v seth match, which i hope donut will upload.

Street fighter!
