Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Recommended Posts

Heggcellent Adventures highlights:

Joffo's bio stalking antics and that one man who had a whole lot of nothing to say about fighting games.

That lovely French man who invited us all to an endless lobby and made a mockery of most of our mains with Ken. All of those successful focus crumples into Ultra.

Whoever it was who sent that salty message. Did anyone get a picture of it? It'll be in Hegg's inbox anyway.

We failed to connect to F Word multiple times. I think it's fair to say he got off quite lightly there.

My god I love Heggfest. It's a real pleasure hanging out with you dudes, and getting to play lag-free Street Fighter is merely the cherry on top. A gloriously delicious cherry. I will relay some of my personal highlights.

Heggfest moment 1: Feeling bad for Jellum and Alistarr having to schlep across London to my place with Jellum's ridiculous amount of luggage, only to force them to play against each other, while I sat down-back in the corner of my living room trying to work but continually losing my concentration. Massive thanks to Jellum for introducing me to kara fireballs, uppercuts and focuses with Ken.

2: Taking 45 minutes to travel the 4.5 miles from my place to Heggfest during rushdown hour in Choo's car.

3: Taking 1 hour 30 minutes getting to Heggfest the next day using public transport.

4: Playing loads of Third Strike with Choo after hours, both going for empty jump parries at the same time and looking silly.

5: The amazing intensity of Heggfest tournament matches. Timeouts, chip finishes, all that good stuff. After a couple of mine my underarms felt kind of numb as the adrenaline left my body.

6: Cunt mashing.

7: Rose ball. The strictest test of reactions after Super Hexagon. (p.s. I have managed 64 seconds on the Hard level now, and 60.something on Hardest, yessss). Maximum props to Hegg and Alistarr for actually achieving the fabled timeout in the first round of finals.

8: Heggselent Adventures. I think playing so much offline against non-cunt mashers hurt our time on ranked. It was pretty fun nevertheless, and I personally loved knifing up fools. I also enjoyed knifing up Goemon and Hypah Peeah offline. I gotta represent the knife, living in South London.

9: Persona! Thanks so much Nate for bringing it. It's a shame the tutorial and such were missing from that copy, but my god what a wildly vibrant and beautiful game that is. There looks to be a ridiculous amount of scope for creative setups and traps, and the attention to detail in the animation was just astounding. I'm probably going to dedicate some serious time to that game.

10: Jellum breaking poverty fighters by using xpadder.

11: (wake up ultra) and other heckling.

12: Excellent tee shirts. I think Alistarrrrr won with his Ricky or tease shirt, Nate came in second with the Calvin and Hobbes number, and Choo and Joffo tie for wearing the same thing. Plopboy a close fifth for his DIY excellence.

13: Mexican food!

Excellent, excellent times. Thanks so much to Hegg for putting it on again, and for growing a beard.

EDIT: And thanks to Plop and Nuskool for the recording.

14: Third Strike parry trials!

15: Joffo showing off his dribbly, sprung-pubed penis.

16: Jellum's impending write-up.

So much fun was had this weekend. It was just great. So many wicked things happened and I was only there on the Saturday.

Highlights in no order.

Cuntmasher

Meeting the new guys or stalwarts who hadn't made it to Heggfest before. Plopboy, Joeplus, Goemon, Nuskool, GC Zombie. They were all suitably lovely folk and fitted in perfectly.

Imp's shades

Nathan's driving and the Spotify playlist (title: HEGGFEST YO) we created specifically for the journey

Alistarr's excellent organisation for the '5 man' snore factory

Donut's old-school arcade-style mindgames in the tournament against

Jellum

, Just brilliant to see

Dat crossword

A/V experts Nuskool and Plopboy for taking care of the recordings. Can't wait to see the tournament all over again.

Roof crew

Shoutout to Tescos meal deal

Joffo's DK t-shirt

Lowlights:

Not seeing Camel

Minimal Haggar

My tournament set with

GC Zombie

not getting recorded.

A five set thriller that went to the third round of the last match. I was fucking broken after it.

Huge props to Hegg for organising and hosting and growing a superb beard. See you all next year I hope.

Oh man! I am finally kinda awake. Heggfest 2012 went by far too quickly for me. Utterly brilliant time, as always. Thanks again for being kind enough to have us all "oooh" and "ooof" in your office, Mr Hegg. And for the luxuriant beard. And for remaining strong enough not to reveal the big secret that development of Space Station Silicon Valley 2: Silicolony* is well under way.

The megabus back was a smaller one, a megrebus, and I was sat next to a woman who was exactly like Mac's mom from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia*. She was playing Song Pop without headphones and when told we would be stopping at services in around 20 minutes she rested an unlit cigarette between her lips in anticipation. The man behind me was one of those big fat guys you find in any pub with real ale from 10am onward drinking porter with a fry up. He coughed every fifteen minutes with spluttery mucus. You could hear it rattling and slapping around his big old throat. Then he'd go on about how desperate he was for a fag. Eight hours well spent.

I am proud of myself for remember where Haggar's place was and getting there wildly early, waking Alistarr and JLM from the 15 minutes or so of sleep they managed after playing in ranked all night. Then we played Street Fighter and it was excellent. It's still hilariously entertaining to me, playing people who like the game just as much, because while I can play other people locally sometimes, I'm always conscious from about four matches in that they're getting bored and would rather we watched Dude Where's My Car, or whatever the cool kids have been up to since I got too obsessed with Street Fighter to notice anything else. Haggar kicked of proceedings by thoroughly disrupting my Ibuki nonsense with far more effective Cammy nonsense. It was a shame he had to go home and be a family man for much of the weekend.

Also amazing was getting the underground from Haggarworld to Heggland, the four of us getting involved in a conversation about taxi drivers and, just as we were getting off, some smiling, shades-wearing, trendy-cool man said to us "You guys should get a podcast". And we all felt thoroughly validated. I mostly get paranoid I'm more like that guy in the cinema queue in Annie Hall.

We all agreed that the fact the guy looked super cool made the compliment better; it would not have mattered as much coming from a fat lisping old wreck of a man. Which I like, because it makes the mockery of Taxi drivers' prejudices brilliantly hypocritical.

JLM won himself some further validation when he caught me with some wild Ibuki-specific Dudley science. I'll leave the detail of it to him because it was mostly a blur to me, but he basically got in close with a heavy hitting combo into some dashing punch which he then FADC'd with a forward dash, teleporting him to the opposite side to reset the combo with another four frame attack (close standing hard kick?) which led to some more big damage, and stun. Utterly amazing. I think I yelped with joy and awe.

Had some revenge matches against Nate's Ken as Rufus, and almost every round was closer than my parents ever were. I like when you're pretty familiar with someone's playstyle to the point were you both become too conscious that they know exactly what you're going to do next.

When the tournament came around I got drawn up against Mr Donut again, like last time, and it starting out pretty close until he got his footing again and made me thoroughly lose. If I wasn't very familiar with some of the cheeky Makoto resets he has then there would definitely have been some perfects in there too. Oh man. I do love the Seth flair. I don't think it was during the tournament, but at one point he caught my Dan with a stun combo that ended up being something like 49 hits in total! Ooof.

In the losers I faced up against everyone's favourite Dan fan, Plopboy. We had some Danning in there and counting-failure hilarity. The unpredictable Fuerte shenanigans were thoroughly entertaining also.

Then I had to face Hegg in losers and he destroyed me, as he is wont to do. All the cheeky stares in the world weren't breaking his resolve. I should have used more tick throws!

I was highly entertained by GC Zombie's custom hitbox stick; did not manage any standing 720s though. I am tempted to get one just to practice that, haha. His Guy antics were brilliant as well. I didn't get to play against him, which is a shame as I have some anti-Guy Ibuki stuff that's all just book-learnin' at the moment, but I bore witness to some spectacular combos and a fair few perfects as well.

Sunny weather and nice rooftop banter with nuskool ("Ah! Giro Cheque! I get it!"), joeplus, JLM and good ole Nate was great fun also; I like that being obsessed with Blast Corps came up several times over that weekend. I think joeplus said he's properly platinum'd the whole thing as well, which makes me really tempted to get hold of an N64 and play it all again. Best game.

I got to briefly play some Poverty fighter, where Alistarr had found some combo-able SPD move and dominated with it. I was fun being absolutely unfamiliar with a game that was basically still Street Fighter. It was a bit like trying to play a half memory of Street Fighter.

Cale was a total gent in taking care of all of us kids by making sure the food got sorted. That was a lot of burritos. I also enjoyed immensely watching Nate and Cale (Nale) play each other. Rambled away at Goemon for a while about when arcades used to exist and be excllent. He also uses a wild button setup with the six rightmost buttons, meaning he wasn't able to join in or trollee'ing in ranked. Damn shame. He also looks a bit like a guy I went to school with called Paul Cavanagh, which threw me off guard a bit. An excellent man though, Goemon. Didn't get to play him though. :(

Played a few cheeky we matches of Virtua Fighter against Hyper P as well, and still couldn't get to grips with it. McWild is ace though. I got Sarah'd. Joeplus's crossword is utterly amazing. My copy got all scrunched up in my bag, so I'd love a pdf. Also you should post it up on eventhubs as well. Also I'm rubbish at it, but I felt like a proper scientist when I did get the occasional clue.

Back at the wild room (after a taxi driver seemingly obsessed with scalping pets), Nate, myself and maybe Cale were wildly tired and so dubbed what would have been our Salty Suite the Sleepy Suite, which I'd thought was a cute wee name for it, until JLM pointed out that it sounded a bit like a date rape drug.

In the morning I lazily watched JLM and Alistarr play Marvel landed the most ludicrous Spencer combo. I thought he'd done a reset in the middle, but noticed the combo counter handn't dropped and it really had been that long. So good. Hopefully he'll transcribe it.

Went mad in the morning and bought 18 doughnuts at Krispy Kreme before heading back to Hegg's. He ended up meeting us en route by coincidence, which was nice. Roseball tournament was spectacularly fun, as was playing a few matches against Camel's tricky Dhalsim. I liked watching him play Hyper P too; so many teleports; I can imagine the ranked rage, haha. I got a few quick matches against Choo as well, who I don't think I've played in aaaages?

Gotta eat dinner now. I'm rambling on nonsense. But yes, excellent times. Lets do it again in colder weather.

Loving all these writeups. Random little things I remembered I liked:

The fact that cale gave the takeaway guys everyone's forum name. Must have sounded like a delivery to a DJ convention.

Rooftop crew

Hearing alistarr hit that moment in super hexagon

Watching Jellum's Chun

The cries of agony at the French joffo's dozens of focus into ultra finishes

"Bonus beats-em-up"

Haha, it's not actually that difficult in comparison to the ridiculous combos real Marvel players do.

LMHS jump MMH (zip zip) S, Bomber, st.MHS sjc UVG, Hidden Missiles, S sjc UVG, wait, S sjc UVG, TK air grapple, zip down, armour piercer xx bionic manoeuvres DHC to doom up-super.

Explanation: you do a standard launcher combo, then air MMH, (then a couple of zips forward if you need to get closer to the corner), then S to knock them to the ground, then the bomber move before you land which bounces them, then if you wanted to play safe you could just do a super there, but if you want to play properly because you're getting some rare offline games then you can link standing MHS to relaunch them, and super jump cancel the S (before you leave the ground) into a vertical grapple (it's like S then a fireball tigerknee motion then H), which doesn't scale so adds 80k of damage wherever you do it in the combo (hence "UVG", which stands for "unscaled vertical grapple"). Then call Doom missiles, a couple of which will hit on the way up, allowing you to cheekily do another S super jump cancel UVG and pull them back to the ground, then the rest of the missiles hit on the way down and pop him off the ground enough to do a third delicious S sjc UVG, pull them back to the ground and finish with your Spencer OTG combo ender of choice - in my case that's the one I can reliably do, which is TK downwards air grapple to pull them off the ground and wall bounce, a downward zip (zips don't affect hitstun decay), land and do the armour piercer move (the one you always see Spencer doing after an overhead) and cancel it into the bionic manoeuvres. Then when that's done you can DHC into Doom's upward super for just enough damage to kill JLM's Captain America in one combo, right from the start of the game. Delicious.

Oh man, I'd forgotten about that. You've also reminded me about the very specific delivery instructions that sounded like we were trying to arrange a drug delivery rather than a bunch of burritos.

Another highlight for me was watching Heggs reaction every time jlm threw him. Each time his cheeks puffed out a little bit more, I hope it was caught on camera.

Amazing write-ups! So much stuff to process from the weekend. My head still hurts from London rush-hour on friday!

Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and meeting all you lovely polite people again/for the first time.

Thanks to Hegg for the place, organising and lesson in patience playing your Guile.

Imp for the sofabed, posh beer and 3rd strike madness. I really really enjoy playing that game. Parrying is the most flowchart breaking dynamic thing of awesome.

Enjoyed what I played of Persona. Cheers Nate for bringing it along and giving me a quick rundown. Fat sprites.

Sad that I didn't get to stay for the rest of Sunday and play everyone I had missed. I did have enough time to enjoy a doughnut and play troll battles with Joffles which was ace.

I think he landed an fadc crouching taunt which probably ranks higher than the Blanka Up-Ball game!

Pics and Vids yes please. Also more write-ups.

Fantastic weekend. 7/10

Amazing weekend. I'm sure i've missed a billion things but some highlights from me:

- The crossword being ace.

- The ever-Focusing French Ken player

- The XBL player profile rant/essay.

- The SFIII parry trials being hugely entertaining to watch.

- Introduction to UMvC

- The ever-Focusing French Ken player finally going random select.

- To quote Imp: "Joffo showing off his dribbly, sprung-pubed penis"

- Roof crew (Thanks guys)

- My tournament games... I may be terrible and during the second game incredibly drunk but much fun was had.

- Being drunk.

- London women.

- You guys really should have a podcast.

- The SFII vinyl.

- Getting a bottle of Pisswasser.

- Nate's taunt in the tournament against Cale (sorry Cale).

Top 3..

3. The mini-donuts. I ate waaaaaay too many. Thanks to whoever brought them.

2. Meeting everyone. What a fantastic group of people you are! <3

1. The "Giro Cheque" lightbulb moment.

However there were a couple of negatives:

- Having to leave early Saturday and Sunday missing both the end of the singles tournament and Rose ball tourney

- Gutted not to have a blast on P4A

- Leaving the power supply. I only had like 2 things to remember and I forgot 1.

- Missing the group photos :(

Yep, AE footage is on its way, hopefully within the next few days (it takes hoooouuuurrrrrs to process and upload), but sadly nobody thought to record Rose Ball, which is a real shame because it would have featured the world's first documented instance of a round going to timeout. So hype.

Mr Camel, where did you buy that fine tshirt from? Only places I can see selling it in those colours are US sites...

Also did anyone order one of those Teefury Tiger tshirts in a large and it's too large as I ordered a medium and it's too medium :(

Also who is who on the pictures?

I bought it direct from Meat Bun* in the US.

I'm the sexy one.

* I know. Sounds like a gay porn site, right?

EDIT: A list of people in the pics. Not in order. See if you can guess who is who :D

Alistarr, Camel, Hyper P, Donut, JoePlus, Choo, JLM, Hegg, Imp, Haggar

I think I've worked out who 3 of the people in those pictures are. And I've met one of them. I hope Joffo's in the photos cos that'd mean the Joffo I've met is an impostor which would be mental.

I'm glad to have had a presence at HeggFest even if it was just in the form of someone's lightbulb moment (2nd year running?).

PS. I got that TeeFury t-shirt in large but it fits me. It's maybe a bit long but I can live with that. Not a bad shirt, reasonable price and fast delivery - I keep checking back on TeeFury in the hope they'll do some more nice tshirts but not liked anything else I've seen so far.

I've met Hegg. I've seen Imp's photo before. I worked out who 'Choo was based on tshirt. I thought Camel would be stretchier. I think I know who Jay Hellum is. I might have spotted Cale. I think I've worked out who Alistarr is based on an analysis of group dynamics. I'm not sure who's Hyper enough to be P, and I donut have a clue about Lyrical or JoePlus.

Also, I'm honoured.
