I'm going to write a wall of text anyway, just for you double o. First, to understand what chains, cancels and links are, you need to know a bit about move properties and frames.

The first thing to note is that the game runs at 60fps, and the timings etc of most moves are measured in frames. The second thing to note is that every move in the game has three 'stages'. They work like this: Startup > Active > Recovery. Startup is when the move is starting up, like when you're swinging for a punch with ryu. Active is when the punch is actually able to hit the opponent. Recovery is when you're following through, and the move is no longer hitting. Once you've pressed a button you're committed to the move, and can't do anything else during these 3 steps, barring the following exceptions.

Some moves have the property where you can exit straight out of the recovery frames ('cancelling' them) and go into another move. An example of this is ryu with his mashing jab. If you press jab, the press jab again during the recovery of the first jab, you will cancel the recovery frames and do another jab. This is known as a chain, though it's really just a specific type of cancel ,namely cancelling one normal move into another. Many characters can chain their light attacks together like this.

Another example of this is doing ryu's cr.mk and then inputting the motion for the fireball really quickly. This will cancel the recovery into fireball like jellum said above. This works because cr.mk is special cancellable. Not every move can be special cancelled (ryu's sweep, for example). Ryu's cr.mk is useful because it reaches far and can be cancelled in this way, meaning that you can pester people with feet and fireballs.

As jellum said, links are done after the recovery of one move has finished, when the opponent is still reeling from being hit. Only some moves will link into others, and this is dependent on the frame timings of the various moves and how long they make your opponent reel ('hitstun') when you hit them. the timing on links can be very tight, down to 1 frame timing, which is 1/60 of a second, while cancel timing is much more lenient.

Why bother doing links? Well, you cannot special cancel a move which you have chained into. For example, you cannot go jab jab jab fireball if you're just mashing the jabs, the fireball just won't come out. But if you go jab jab LINK to cr.mp, then you can cancel into fireball. This is good because it lets you get much bigger damage and start doing good combos. It also puts your opponent under more pressure. And the jabs at the start give you time to see if you hit your opponent (finish the combo!) or if they're blocking (maybe go for a sneaky throw to beat their block).

Hope that helps.

Not sure what happened last night with Oni, you were stuffin' my slashes all over the place at the start.

I could probably make any kind of counterfeit Heggfest you may be planning to put on. I'd probably be up for curating my own dodgy knock-off if I had my own place, in fact.

Also, Happy BirthJ(LM)

The best thing about rose is how her slide somehow totally stuff's adon's walldive, which seems to surprise adons no end.

*makes note*

I would certainly be up for London-based Tesco Value Heggfests.

Oh, and happy birthdudley JLM!

How many of y'all live in London, then? If we were to organise a generic own-brand non-heggfest heggfest that just lasted for, say, and afternoon and evening one weekend round someone's flat, who would perhaps want to come?

I think I once made a joke a few years back that everyone in rllmuk seems to live either in London or "the North", making us Southwestern folk a rare breed...

I spoke to a real scotsman on the phone about maybe getting some of his juicy organic Internet pipes to suck down on, and he told me not to be alarmed if he suddenly yelped, because there was a WILD thunderstorm happening at the moment. I almost exclaimed "shit in a box!" as a test, but I have a feeling it wasn't actually joffo, and I'm just an unintentional scot-racist.

Maybe it was me. It almost certainly wasn't though, because I've been playing Street Fighter in an Endless lobby all day against JLM and Donut. JLM ended up winning something like 47 to 11. It was wild. Double Hakan mirrors in there too, which were amazing fun.

Had a couple of games in ranked which i all lost until I came across a 4000+BP Roy, but how he got up to 4000+ is beyond me as he wasn't that good and I managed to get the better of him and I usually really struggle against shotos. Just goes to show BP doesn't mean owt.

Right lads, I'm just about to book my Megabus to arrive in Ye Olde Londontowne on Saturday morning. I'm not decided on the journey back yet though; when do y'all expect the Sunday night's Street Fightin' to end? I might be able to save one hotel's worth of money/being a burden for some generous soul by just getting a late night sunday bus.
