Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Recommended Posts

That would be super excellent as I can no longer make it on either Sat or Sun.

I haven't learned a secret character. Am I still allowed to come?

Can we play Carcassonne instead of Street Fighter?

EDIT: oh poop.

EDIT #2: actually, if there are still fightings on Sunday evening I could probably pop along.

I still ocasionally laugh at the thought of Carlito's desciption of Dhalsim enaging in bumsex with Ken, with his "prehensile sphincter reaching out for Ken's cock like a horses lips snaffling up a sugar cube". Oh man.

I think that all came from an innocuous comment I made about Yun and Ken bumming each other, which then sent the discussion towards erotic fanfic between SF characters and eventually carlito's legendary "which SF character would I most like to poke up the bum" post. Good times.

Is that a decision then? Are we rolling with the weekend of the 8th? Where in god's name is Alistarr to organise our lives when you need him?

I vote we do the 8th weekend and then also see each other more frequently than once a year in future for fighting game goodness*.

I know this means Mr Haggar can't make it this time, which is really lame, but there are an awful lot of maybes for the other weekends from people who have correctly remembered their cousins' birthdays**.

But hey, what do I know, I'm the guy who devised the tournament structure last year that resulted in us basically tossing a coin to decide who made it out of pools. I'm really not the man to trust with organising stuff.

Speaking of which:

Oh my it looks like it will be cheaper for me to get the train in each day than stay at a travel lodge :o

I need to check but it might be better for me to do this instead of staying over, I'll check it out.

I'm going to try and scout out some group accommodation options so I'll let you know how that looks for cheapness. The main motivation is more that we like to stay up until the early hours playing yet more fighting games after we've caught the last train home or whatever, but cheapness also factors in. I think there's definitely me, JLM, Nate and Cale who need somewhere to stay for a couple of nights, plus Joffo and you depending on your travel decisions. I'll maybe PM later (if anyone else is interested in hotel-sharing, let me know).

I'm excited!

*Either JLM or I will hopefully be hosting a one-day event at some point soon - to which anyone capable of travelling to the north-west/north-east is welcome - purely because we were both talking trash last night about how online lag was the only reason we kept dropping our Marvel combos. In my case it's true, but I think JLM was bluffing.

**I know, I know, it's not actually his birthday.

How many of y'all live in London, then? If we were to organise a generic own-brand non-heggfest heggfest that just lasted for, say, and afternoon and evening one weekend round someone's flat, who would perhaps want to come?

I live in Twickenham which is close enough and yes, I would be up for same room fighting.

Weekend of the 8th is still good for me. Let's confirm it up a notch.

Also yes, those of us who live at least slightly close to each other could totally do mini-Heggfests more often than once a year too. I'll be back living in Leeds as of this weekend, so Manchester and anywhere else a bit Northern will be quite accessible. We were hoping we may be able to lure Joffo down for something some time as it's not quite as big of a trek as going to London.

A chain is pretty much just normal moves. Any move which combos when you just mash on the button is a chain, pretty much. Crouching medium kick into fireball is an example of a cancel; the recovery of your crouching medium kick animation gets 'cancelled' by the animation for the fireball.

A chain is a combo where one move transitions into another before the first one has completely finished. So the animation of the first move doesn't have to end, and the second one will still come out.In SF4 it dtypically refers to rapidly mashed flurries of light attacks. It also applies to "target combos" like with Ken if you do close standimg medium punch into standing hard punch. This can be done as fast as you want and the moves seamlessly blend into one another. These are listed in the command lists for each character, but Ryu doesn't have any so I wouldn't worry about them for now.

The example Joffo gave of mashing crouching jab as fast as you can with Ryu is a good example of this. Doesn't matter what your timing is, and you don't have to wait for the first jab to finish before hitting the second one, you just tap it as fast as you like and the ending of each jab will cancel into the beginning of the next one.

A link, on the other hand, is a combo where the second move has to start after the animation for the first move has completely ended, so if you want the moves to combo you'll need specific timing. Some of these timings are extremely tricky, but you get much more useful and more damaging combos as a trade off.

A good way to see the distinction is to put the dummy in training on auto block, which means if you attept a combo, the dummy will take your first hit, then if at any point your moves stop combo-ing the dummy will block.

Now, try going in with Ryu and mashing crouching jab and you'll see that you get a three or four hit combo because his jabs chain into each other. However, if you try the same thing with Vega, you'll notice that the dummy will block after the first hit. This is because Vega's jabs don't chain into each other and need to be linked. If you want to do two or three crouching jabs in a row with Vega, you need to tap the jabs with very particular timing, allowing the first one to finish before you hit the second.

cr.mk into fireball is an example of a cancel. That is, any combo/sequence of moves where the recovery of a normal move is cut short and interrupted by the start of another move (usually a special move or super move). So instead of drawing his leg back after the crouching medium kick, he cancels that part of the animation and goes straight into the fireball.

A useful combo with Ryu is crouching light kick - > crouching jab - > crouching hard punch - > special move.

So you chain crouching light kick into crouching jab, then link crouching jab into crouching hard punch, then cancel crouching hard punch into a special move of your choosing.

Of course it's close enough, I wild through twickenham every day on my opulent commute to vile Egham.

Also, double_o, that tutorial video series i linked to a while back explains the difference between chains, cancels and links. It's probably more intuitive to see it on a video verses us trying to write a wall of text here, when other people have already explained it better.

I've fixed my error in that bit you've quoted. You don't need specific timing to go from crouching light kick to crouching jab.

Ryu tends to combo into his ultra using juggles (knocking someone into/out of the air and then catching them with a move before they hit the floor):

If you meet someone in the air with jumping medium punch you can land and catch them with your ultra.

If you anti-air someone with a jab dragon punch you can catch them with ultra.

In the corner, if you land an EX hurricane kick or EX fireball you can follow up both of those with ultra.

The most common way to land Ryu's ultra is to use Dragon Punch FADC, but I'd probably leave that for the moment.

Double O you are correct. For that particular combo I tend to do the light kick into light punch fairly slowly so I have a sort of rhythm going and am more likely to get to the jab into hard punch bit right, but find out what works for you in training. The special move at the end is your choice, and it can depend on where you are on screen and how much meter you have, and of course which one you find easiest to do.

Joffo I am all over that. What else would I be doing on my birthday. Yes, I am shamelessly begging people to say nice things to me. Don't worry though, I am going to Leeds to celebrate and do fun things at the weekend, but the day itself happens to have fallen on a drab Wednesday in Nottingham.
