Actually, I was lying a little bit, sorry. I only double tap MP+MK if I'm mid combo, which is probably even weirder.

e.g. Seth's st.HP xx Boom FADC (double tapped) st.HP xx Boom FADC (double tapped) st.HP xx whatevs.

I don't do the double tapping thing with regular ass FADCs. Why? :(

I'M BACK. Bit surprised to see Fightpads in any high street store, but this one was tucked away in a corner of HMV. Granted, I don't play much Gief, but I play him a heck of a lot more than Ryu, which was the only option you had when getting a Fightpad at launch... :hmm:

how long between games? also how insanely high is the standard?

Not too long last night, but good luck getting a player match (which is what I really wanted). I was mostly matched against people with pretty even 50%-ish win rates but was consistently beaten. Lots of dropped and/or easy-mode combos on display, only a little bit of flash here and there so I guess there are still just enough casual players around th save me having to fight monsters. I learned that not only do I still suck, but my training mode theory fighter team isn't anywhere near as godlike as I'd hoped. Not sure whether to grind it out, go back to the lab, or retire with some small scrap of dignity intact.

New controller works fine, so there wasn't anything else causing the fault. Someone invite me to something. :P

Also I fully expect people to start saying "oh no, has it broken again" when I start my usual deliberate leaping around...

Cheers for all the games, was lovely to be in a lobby with people I don't usually get a chance to play. Poor Plopboy was having a nightmare with his connection - some matches it would load up but then freeze, don't know what that's all about? I had some laggy matches but it was mostly good. Qazi - love how you kept talking even when I forgot to turn my mic on.

I left after one final laggy match vs. Jason who'd just arrived. Left him and Donut to beast it out.

Ended up playing UMvC3 yesterday a wee bit, just playing through arcade mode to get the achievement for finishing it with no continues. Still using a kinda badly matched wee team of Wolverine, Skrull and Morrigan. As soon as Wolverine is dead I am dead. I do sometimes try to Morrigan fireball spam, but there's absolutely no thought, technique or reason in how I do it, so it ends up being pretty unneffective.

I did manage, however, to win two of the six ranked matches I managed to find. I really enjoy the game now, even if I feel I've learned little, win or lose. Turns out my play time clock was under five hours. Haha, I barely play other games. :(

Re: Heggfest, I should be good for any of the other September weekends with a bit of notice. I'm in Leeds most weekends for potential jobs/house hunting/visiting friends, but I can put aside all of those trivial matters for a weekend of fightings.

GGs to all yesterday. Returning after a whole week (can you imagine?) of no Streetfighter saw me playing fighting games for six solid hours last night and enjoying it immensely.

Started with Mahvel against Allystarr. I think Dormammu is my weakest and most limited character now, which is actually a sign of progress in that there are matches where he doesn't have to do a lot and my Cap/Task pairing do most of the heavy lifting. Cap is my strongest character by miles, and the fact that he's the only one I've spent significant time with in training mode is very apparent in a game I play so semi-regularly. I'm sure I'll do the same with Taskmaster soon, because at the moment I can't do any relaunch combos with him and I drop my extended b'n'b combos with frustrating regularity. Highlight of the set was Allystarr's frankly ludicrous X-factorless Ghost Rider comeback. I felt like retiring from the game after that one. Joffo play Marvel with us, it is fun.

After that I played 30 or so games of Dudley mirrors in AE against a Swedish gent who has Dudley as his main. I ended up winning all but five of them but he didn't get angry about it and kept hitting rematch and we exchanged nice polite Dudley-themed messages afterwards. It was interesting playing a long set of mirrors because I kept noticing little things we were doing differently despite having the same tools available, and which of those led to me taking most of the games. I think I'm a significantly more experienced player than him, but things like me having Dudley safe jump set ups and him not havng them gave me a huge advantage. It wasn't so much that he couldn't use them on me, but more that he didn't recognise them and ended up wasting three bars on FADC-ing his wake up EX uppercuts.

I may send him the link to those shintroy Dudley tutorials at some point. He'd clearly spent a lot of time in training mode drilling his combos because he had very consistent execution, and I feel like if you're dedicating time to tdrilling combos then you might as well spend time improving the rest of your game as well.. He's probably spent infinitely more time in training mode with his character than I have, and if he'd split that same amount of time between practising combos and learning some Dudley science he'd be so much better. Personally I find discovering new tech. and using the lab for science experiments to be a lot more fun than drilling combos anyway, though this obviously isn't true for everyone.

After that I played lots of Gouken, a little bit of Dudley and a tiny bit of random select against Haggar and Donut and it was lots of fun. Haggar don't worry, I've been playing Gouken at least semi-regularly for ages so it wasn't day three or anything. Didn't play him much in Vanilla, had him in my regular pool of secondary characters in Super, then after all the fun AE changes I started using him even more. I tend to go to him just after Sakura if we're doing a mains/semi-mains lobby. Also I watch a lot of Bullcat, Desora and Proud Strawberry and steal things from them.

I like his buttons, his amazing block strings/pressure/counter hit set ups (that +6 million AE close standing medium punch is the greatest thing) and the utterly insane stuff he can do in the corner, but above all I love his seemingly endless array of gimmicks and stuff he can do that you wouldn't expect to be work and most people won't have seen before.. Every time I watch high level Gouken players I'll see a new reset or shenanigan that goes on the mental list of things to do in a match. For example, I hit Joffo with parry into Super the other day and he squealed with glee. He's been able to do that forever but you never see it and it doesn't look like it should work and it looks tremendous and Gouken is brimming with that sort of stuff.

Most of the corner combos and resets I do now are improvised variations on stuff I've seen other people do and they all just work because he's such a juggle/reset/gimmick machine. I was so chuffed when I hit standing fierce - > EX palm - > FADC - > jumping fierce reset - > overhead a couple of times today. I made that up on the fly because everyone's seen me do the FADC - > jumping MK - > cross under one, and I thought switching from a left/right mix up to a high/low mix up might freshen it up a bit and it worked just lovely. You can juggle and reset off a palm or a FADC palm with almost anything you want with Gouken and you'll usually end up with a quality mix up. I'm working on a few based around back throw - > juggle with tatsu - > FADC - > Normal - > demon flip funs next. Expect that in a lobby near you soon.

Lastly, Donut, I hate your Guile more than anything in this world. Flash kicks all over the place, jab jab throw, jab jab jab jab throw, jab throw, flash kick, jab throw. It is custom built to annoy me and it works so very, very well. I can't punish enough flash kicks to make you stop flash kicking can I? It cannot be done. You are a bad person.

Yes, I laughed with glee and amazement when you hit me with all that intense gouken nonsense. I play so few goukens, and none of them ever do anything like that that it was a joy to behold. I think the only thing I did which delighted me was catching you with a few instant air throws on your wakeup because stop neutral jumping. Also I continually forget how ludicrously good his sweep is. It's like, what, 5 frame startup and -3 on block? Disgusting. He has such fierce close pressure now.

Also look at this, I'm not sure of the exact nature of the tech but juri might have just gone top tier:

Haha yes, those air throws were excellent. Neutral jumping is far and away my worst habit with all characters. Neutral jump roundhouse is such an amazing button for both Chun and Sakura, so it's become too ingrained in me now to stop it.

Also yes, Gouken's sweep is amazing, and not just as a footsies/poking tool either. A lot of Gouken players will mash sweep during sloppy opposition pressure rather than mashing a reversal and it's actually very effective.
