I just totally scrubbed the fuck out of AmnioticRetch playing ranked, the number 6 Cody on XBL (18747BP, 3750PP). I actually did fairly well in the first round, but he wasn't really falling for my shenanigans in the second. Still, he managed to mess up a whiffed DP punish which would have taken the round, which meant I could do a lol worthy EX DP for the win.

Whee.

That Chris Hu thing is amazing, the reaction at the end especially.

I have been standing/sitting in a field/tent/barn drinking and watching bands this weekend, but I have a week's leave so I am planning on being around for a lot of boutage. But hopefully not when it's really sunny as I'll just make myself feel bad.

GG's tonight to Joe, Imp, Donut... I'm going to go fall over soon as it appears that I play even worse on a third of a bottle of whisky than I do sober. Impressive, I know.

EDIT: And an awesome Dan vs Dan Victory to end things on, comedy gold. Well, almost. One more to lose on. Vs Donuts Rose. Oh dear.

Geegs all. My internet died just after Jellum left, and seeing as Donut went away for a while too, I thought it was a good point to stop.

Jellum, I only picked Cammy as I noticed earlier she has a similar jumping attack to Dudley, and I felt we needed to do them simultaneously. It was most triumphant. Thanks!

Ggs Jiro, those were some fun games. your Cody is coming along nicely.

Ggs to Donut also. Makoto vs Dudley remains the staple match of the moment and it is much fun. I'd like to do some more Dudley vs Balrog too at some stage. He's annoying for Dudley because, not only does he have far superior footsies (like much of the cast), but he can also jab his way out of Dudley's close up pressure and use EX rushes to interrupt it. Going to have to start learning some difficult match ups with Dudley eventually, and there are plenty of them. :(

On the subject of Dudley vs Makoto, welcome to the first installment of

In the lab with Jellum.

Presented in glorious 3DS camera super grainy terrible angle sea sickness o-vision. You can see what's going on at least.

Anyway, yes, I saw V-Ryu do a mental thing in a FT5 against a Cody player recently and thought "I bet that works on Dudley as well, the wide git." So I took it to the lab, confirmed that it does and then, as is my wont, knocked up a reset that makes use of it. If I ever do more of these they will undoubtedly all involve resets. I love resets the most. I have a selection of new Dudley ones up my sleeve for the next person who plays me too. They are classy.

Anyway, here's the reset what I done. There is undoubtedly already a V-Ryu video about this, but I hadn't seen this particular trick before and enjoyed trying to create a gimmicky set up that uses it:

In case the video quality is too big a problem, it goes like this:

Standing MP - > EX Hayate - > Towards + LK - > Oroshi - > FADC through the opponent - > cr. MP - > EX Oroshi.

And here is me chopping and ghosting through Dudley to demonstrate the trick on its own. It works with either jab or medium punch oroshi. Doesn't work on shotos and I presume it doesn't work on skinnier characters either. Cody, Dudley, Abel, Balrog and the like should be good though. You catch me with delayed oroshi on my wake up quite often Donut, so I reckon this might be a good shenanigan for you:

I'm going to be equally annoyed/pleased with myself if/when I get hit by this.

I thought I'd be having a mid-week day off this week, but I don't until next thursday. Sadness. I'm gonna try learn a few basics with my weakest characters now that AE Sakura is pretty much at B rank. Mainly the twins, Guy and Juri. Guy is probably one of the hardest characters to just pick up and try to use; the slow, odd jump arc means you pretty much have to know setups before you attempt anything. He has some really, really fun corner combos though, and that elbow pressure can really frustrate people who don't know how to deal with it (me).

I've been having fun with Ibuki recently also; The double HK sweep luncher high jump cancelled into command dash under is great fun. I also hadn't realised you can link cr.lp relatively easily after her slowverhead.

I did the London Spartan race yesterday, and while it was amazing fun (what better than crawling through an ice bath with electrified wires suspended above you). I appear to have comprehensively fucked my back. As such I will spend all evenings thus week immobile on the sofa playing video games, instead of kickboxing. Maybe I will finally play alastair on a weekday, perhaps?

You double-hard bastard Haggar. London Spartan sounds hellish and gruelling but I assume you didn't do the 48hr deathrace? I did the Edinburgh Urbathon a few years ago which makes it sound like I parkoured a marathon across the crow-stepped gables of the Old Town when the reality was more like this:

Thanks for the good games last night JLM. If you get bored you could write me a how-to-get-better guide. I think I won about 1 in 5 of our matches. Did you notice my ethical Blanka? Well I tried for an ethical Blanka but then realised I can't play him any more and had to Blanka ball non-stop out of frustration. Some great Dudley vs. Cody matches in there. Perfecting me with Fei at the end was just rude though.

It wasn't that bad, only 5k. However they made the first kilometre repeatedly running up and down a massive hill to knacker us out for the rest of the race. The best bit was crawling through muddy water, under barbed wire, and the surface under the water was basically just gravel. My hands and knees are cut to ribbons. the death race is a bit beyond me, I think. Only massive psychos do that! but I'm going to do tough mudder next year which is about 12 miles.

Also I'm going to do this in November and it looks top.

I got to slide down an inflatable slide into a some foamy bubbles which seemed a bit off-message to me.

The zombie race sounds fun, if potentially dangerous. I'm sure someone will get carried away and try to kick off a zombie's head</safety-dad>.

How many fighting game pirates are there? I can think of Bonne Jenet and Cervantes and that's it. Why isn't there a decent One Piece fighter (I'm on a total Luffy trip at the moment, love the art and story)? This ain't good enough:

Jump Super Stars and its sequel, Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS are pretty good Smash Bros style 2D platform fighters, Jiro, and both feature One Piece characters. There are some PS2 3D fighters too. I've only played one, One Piece Grand Battle (I think) and it's not great. It looks like it might be a fun Powerstone clone, but it's very disappointing to play.

EDIT: There's a pirate in World Heroes. Captain Kidd~:

I have the first - Jump Super Stars - and it can be a bit baffling to play as you ideally want to be able to set up 'koma' which are sort of battle cards that you can use during play by tapping the touchscreen, but to win these koma and set them up you have to be able to navigate around a failr complicated menu system which is all in Japanese. It all starts to make sense if you play if for a while, but if you have a break from the game, tying to remember how to navigate the menu again can become a pain in the arse. Also, a huge part of the single player game is a tutorial which seems to drag on forever.

I was once very tempted to buy that, but didn't. I didn't know who any of the jumping superstars were, but it seemed like a lot of fun. Also, googling different combinations of the words "pirate", "videogame" "fighting" and "battle arena toshinden" while bored during your lunch break suggests that Leon from Battle Arena Toshinden is a kind of pirate.

:cut to in-game footage of a frenzied, hyper-saturated fighting game. Full screen explosions, laser blasts and psychedelic FX rock the screen to a soundtrack of brostep incongruously intercut with whimisical melodies.

Camel's Pugwash is on the receiving end of a battering from a small green locomotive - frantically trying to block the high-low mixup game of steam blasts and piston-slams, suddenly Camel's seizes an opportunity to tag out Pugwash for the Soup Dragon and before Jiro can react her awesome level 3 Ultra "Green soup" strips Ivor's health bar in an instant for a screen-shattering KO - Your watching Oliver Postgate's Big Battle Colosseum.
