Re. the use of the Training Stage - it was suggested on Something Awful that in Marvel's case, it's because the PS3 is, well, kinda shit and experiences issues on the busier stages but because Sony supports the event, they have to use the damn things instead of the 360 version.

You should try my favourite game of trying to win using nothing but Focus Absorbs and Rufus' Ultra 2 against [YOUR OPPONENT]. It's definitely possible! I've only won a single round here and there that way though, never a full match.

This is correct. In most tournaments the players will pick training stage or Bonne Wonderland because they're the least distracting stages, but for PS3 tournaments it'll be training stage only because the slowdown on the PS3 version is the least prevalent on that stage. The worst thing is that it doesn't completely solve the problem, as Combofiend visibly dropped at least one opportunity on stream due to the infamous PS3 slowdown.

Oh, not quite; In the Rufus vs [YOUR OPPONENT] matchup I don't allow the focus attack to actually connect: absorb only. The only attack you're allowed to hit with is Ultra 2. You have to connect it three times to win, iirc. Might be four.

Has anyone tried License challenge 7 on Virtua Fighter 5 FS yet? It's a custom rules match where every move is cancellable. It's pretty damn intense and hilarious fun. It should be the default mode at EVO.

Surely Sony are massively shooting themselves in the foot, there. Why on earth would you pay for a big tournament to run a game on your console which has issues with slowdown, thereby making your console look rubbish.

Maybe microsoft secretly pay them to use PS3s.

Can we petition them for longer matches next year? Surely FT3 for top 8 and FT5 grand finals wouldn't be the end of the world. It's so variable in the FT2. One dropped combo or bad read and suddenly blam, that can be it. Zhi was going on about that at the SEA major, how they very deliberately structured their tournament so that the most skilled player could win.

Yeah absolutely. They finally made the sensible decision with Marvel after Yipes made it the standard at Curleh Mustache and it's baffling that they don't do it for the main game. In Marvel this year they had it as two out of three in pools and then three out of five after that. I think when you have an obscenely huge bracket to get through that's acceptable. People might get randomed out in the early rounds, but the tournament would still run on time and the quarter finals/semi finals would always see more accurate and fair results. 2 out of 3 in a top 8 is no way to decide anything.

I can understand that everyone might get a (gamer)bee in their bonnet if some spoilers somehow infiltrate the conversation, but sometimes it's hard to avoid dropping the (human)bomb. I think we all need to understand that this thread is under all of our dieminions, and if we don't like it we can Daigo elsewhere. Sometimes it's too easy to get lost in the xiaohype and po(oongko)st things we later regret.

You did throw out those wake-up supers and ultras a lot, they were (mostly) easy to block. I try to only use ultras and supers when I've got a set-up for them. I don't stick by this, but it helps.

I don't think adon use picked up that much after gamerbee's prior successes. He's a very difficult character to use effectively, once people learn how to deal with jaguar tooth spam. Quite high execution too, since most of his big damage comes from FADC combos, and I think he's got a much shorter FADC window on his rising jaguar than a shoto uppercut.

I've been thinking of trying cammy a bit more, she has basically everything I like characters to have. That being an amusing crouching animation, a love of cats and at least 1 largely useless special move.

Marvel top 8 was amazing at points, that's the most I've ever enjoyed seeing that game happen.
