Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

You have to subscribe to get the skisonic stream in HD. It's like $5 or something. Also I think the other HD streams are also included as a bonus. Stream chat is, I think, a subscriber only benefit also, which is a huge mercy.

Regular (read, perfectly acceptable) stream quality is 100% free.

Fair does JLM, I am a bit harsh on US players as I just don't find them as fun to watch or as precise in what they do (see number of dropped combos), Justin used to be top US player but now it seems like there are several that can give him a challenge (but right now luck is with him and he seems to have got over the slump from evo 2010). It's not that Rufus is unstoppable but like you say Japan perhaps lacks top Rufus players (or ones that are willing to do the cheap stuff to win) and in a 2 out of 3 setup Rufus' margin for error seems like one of the biggest there is, as ex-messiah messups against most of the cast lead to this weird mixup situation where you have to pick the right punish if there even is one. Enough about the fat one though... are there going to be any Dan's onstream this year?

Yeah, Louffy is still around. He's sponsored by WatchDaMatch (along with Evans, Cuongster, Renegad and V-Ryu), still rocking Rose and still rocking the PlayStation pad. He got 5th at the ridiculously stacked World Game Cup in France this year, eliminating Fuudo along the way:

He also placed highly at the German road to Evo event in May, sohe definitely has some Evo points under his belt and I hope he's attending.

I'd love Aquasilk to make top 8 for the reasons you mention. He may not be the outright best Gief but he's easily my favourite Gief, and is a thoroughly hilarious chap to go with it. I love that clip from his stream where he gets perfected by Cuongster and R Kelly songs himself. "Peeeed on some little siiilks". Chris Hu/Aquasilk is such a great commentary duo/bromance as well.

ManyHs, fair enough, though I think you're putting the Japanese players on a pedestal with the idea that they have an honour system that won't let them use cheap stuff to win. Kazunoko anyone? Tokido dedicates his life to finding the cheapest and most broken stuff he can in any fighting game and then exploiting it to the max, and it's what's makes him so damn great. The Akuma vortex is as cheap as it gets, if we're using cheap as a synonym for "effective" which seems to be the done thing nowadays.

Yes! It let me play Haggar and everything.

Also, to conclude my ramblings about Rufii; I think those criticisms of U.S. players is more applicable to Ricky than Justin, because Ricky does tend to bulldoze his way through opponents and boil the game down to reactions, reads and 50/50s. It plays to his strengths and he's still a great player, but I totally get that it can feel quite brainless, random and sloppy and I get sick of it at times. I think there's a similar contrast between Wolfkrone's approach to C. Viper and Latif's, and I much prefer Wolfkrone's as a result of it. PR Rog and Dieminion are as technically sound and methodical as the best Japanese players though, so there's a good mix. I wholeheartedly agree that the Ricky/Justin domination of U.S. majors has been very dull though, and those all EG grand finals are horrible.

Probably but yeah like you say, Kaz and Tokido are cheap as hell and I like it cos they do it with style! (I'd say Mago too, more especially as Sagat), just Rufem in particular over there seem a lot more cautious for some reason from what I've seen.

I didn't spot Louffy or Sanford looking over the sf4 brackets which is a shame if true, both are great to watch :\

The thing that gets me about Justin is that his knowledge of the game is what gets him through. I think he uses Rufus as he considers him the strongest character to deal with a lot of fundmental situations

but I don't consider him to have a 2nd character rather a pool of characters he can turn to to deal with situational stuff.

I always remember reading an interview with VRyu where he talked about when Justin used Makoto to beat Gamerbee. He said he could tell from watching him use her that he didn't have a deep understanding of how to use the character but used his knowledge of the game, the characters and the player he was playing, to win.

Is this bad? Maybe not...But it deflates me to think that winning is more about this kind of understanding over pushing characters, learning tricks, training bad match ups etc.

I've always wondered what tournements would be like if you couldn't switch characters at all.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of character specialists and would prefer it everyone did that, though I can see why they don't PR Rog is as good as he is because he's been Balrog since day 1, though he's fortunate in that Balrog doesn't have any staggeringly bad match ups. That said, he has also shown that, if you're dedicated to your character, you can overcome those as well. Akuma gives Balrog a horrible time, but PR Rog was able to grind it out and learn how to beat Tokido, for example. Iperu is a joy to watch because he has specific tricks and match up specific tactics for any given opposition character, and again it's because he's stuck with his oddball low tier character from day 1. I love seeing stuff like Xian destroying Guile players even though it's meant to be Gen's worst match up too.

I think there's an even bigger place for it in Marvel. People are coming up with new stuff all the time because the game is so open ended, and a lot of players would actually do better if they accepted that they won't win with their S-Tier team if a bunch of other players are doing the same thing better, but they might have a shot if they come up with something new. Kusoru destroying everyone at Final Round was evidence of this, and the likes of Royal Flush and LLND doing amazing things with unorthodox teams make for some of the best moments in that game.

GGs Joffmond! It has been far too long sir. Lovely Dan and Honda things to be had. I was flicking around all the characters I have new stuff with since I last played you in a desperate bid to earn your respect and admiration.

I absolutely love this monitor I'm using whilst on tour, and I'm annoyed that I never tried running my Xbox through it before. Both joffo and Alistarr will be familiar with me waxing lyrical about it. Significantly less screen lag than my regular TV, and suddenly I can hit a ton of combos I've never been able to get before. Joffo, that is the beastliest my Dudley has ever been. I feel like I am inching closer to my dream of maining Dudley for reals one of these days.

Ggs Donut. the 15-20 straight games of Dudley vs Makoto were lots of fun. Buttons vs Buttons, plus frames vs plus frames, ridiculous damage and stun on both sides. I still drop Dudley combos quite often when the matches are at such a frantic pace, but I'm now at the stage where I'm disappointed if I miss them rather than surprised if I hit them, which is definitely progress.

Good games JLM sir! Excellent fun to play you again! That Dudley stuff was all pretty spectacular. Gave me The Fear of Buttons. I hope maybe I'll be able to get on for long enough to play an extended set against you soon as well, to drum some patience into me. I was desperately trying to do some showy stuff with Ibuki and Dan as well, haha!

Loved those ridiculous, surely-that's-too-late links with Dudley and Guy as well. Mmmm. What an absolutely pure, level-headed Street Fightin' scientist you are.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the Ibuki. I remember you doing at least one thing that I didn't know was actually a possible thing with her.

That Dudley link is absurd. Doesn't look like it should work but looks great and does a big chunk of damage. That was the first time I've attempted it in a match, and I didn't even know it was possible until I saw Marn do it at the SBO qualifiers. I wish he'd start playing SF4 seriously again and bring back that Dudley full time.

The Guy one is great for big punishes and is much easier than it looks. When I was researching Guy to try and learn him I alwas thought it was counter hit only, but it's just one of those links that looks like it should be counter hit only. Like most of Cammy's combos.

So I'm moving to a new house soon and I have no idea what the internet connection is like. I'll have to get on soon and have some possibly-final games with you folks at some point. On the plus side, one of my new housemates is a big old geek like me and another is a student, so I might be able to finally get some decent local multi going.

Oh yeah, does anyone know if it's possible to replace buttons on that Burly Men Brawlstick? My lk feels a bit less snappy than it was.

I can't see the Evo schedule at work but I've kind of assumed SFIV pools are on Friday and Marvel on Saturday, is that right? I'm at a wedding on Saturday night so I'll miss a lot of Marvel but I can accept this.

I can't accept this. quote.gif

I'll update the first post with links, streams and whatnot accordingly tonight.

On a Marvel note (sry), did anyone see yipes tearing it up last night (on the FGTV2 Twitch.tv stream) with Spencer/Virgil. Oof.

:D I've started enjoying watching it despite knowing very little about how to actually play it, I'll definitely catch up with it via the archives on Sunday but I'm not as bothered about missing it live. As long as the commentators are good I'll get something out of it.

I saw a bit of that Yipes stream last night, he was slaying some Japanese fella using Spiderman and looking as beastly as always. Also, does anyone who knows anything about Marvel expect much from Zak at Evo?

I saw some Zak on the Curleh Moustache stream from the weekend. I've been off sick for the last two days and for the first day I did nothing but drift in and out of sleep to CM and the SBO quals. He's very good but I doubt he'll trouble top 8. Always nice to see a Firebrand, though, there's not enough of those about really.

I dunno, a lot of people seem to be struggling to land the TAC infinites in competition at the moment. It might just be that there's not been enough time for people to get them down pat, so that they won't be a huge issue. And it's not like touch of death combos are unheard of in marvel, I guess.

Cheers for the games Lyrical and Jiro. Sorry for the appalling Guy I just was trying to land LP MP HP sHk ex Hurricane kick but I was struggling to start the combo and either kept mashing LP or the time I did manage LP MP HP I the did dHK and thus cocked it up. Though having said that it only really works on the corner and I wasn't anywhere near getting either of you in said corner :)

Gg's though :)
